Pitt will be using an Oakland hotel and off-campus apartments to help house incoming students
The University of Pittsburgh will be using a hotel in Oakland and some off-campus apartments to help house incoming students this fall. According to a University spokesperson, Pitt is welcoming a record amount of first-year students this fall. With the record number of students soon descending upon Oakland, the University says that housing assignments have been shared with a majority of the incoming class, but some students have been notified that their housing hasn't been determined yet. As a result, the University says it has leased space for more than 400 beds from the Webster Apartments and the Pennsylvania Apartments, both located along North Dithridge Street, and from the Hampton Inn on Hamlet Street. The University says it has also added nearly 300 beds "by leveraging other existing facilities to best meet the needs of our students, including the renovated and recently reopened Franklin Apartments at 305 Atwood Street." All of the off-campus housing assignments, that the University says they expect to be sent to students later this week, are located less than a mile from campus and "meet the University's standards for safety, amenities, and access to campus resources." The University says that students who will be living in the off-campus housing will still have a Resident Assistant and "all other traditional supports one would have in a dorm/residence hall."

New hotel breaking ground in Manhattan's Aggieville neighborhood
MANHATTAN (KSNT) – There is a big groundbreaking taking place this week in the Little Apple. On July 16, developers started construction on a new 105-room Hampton Inn at 12th and Laramie streets in Manhattan. This project has been a part of Aggieville's vision since 2019. Back in January, Manhattan's city commission approved $20 million in Industrial Revenue Bonds to help fund the project. City leaders say the investment will pay for itself over time, in the boost it brings to the economy. Hotel Topeka may have a potential buyer 'It'll contribute towards transient gas tax in our community,' Jason Hilger, Manhattan Deputy City Manager, said. 'The district isn't effect until 2038, so the quicker we can get this built, constructed, we'll start capturing that roughly half million to $750,000 in revenue through 2038, to help us pay for public infrastructure.' The Hampton Inn, along with a 100-stall parking garage, is expected to open late next year. For more local news, click here. Pensacola Beach Air Show: Look back at Saturday's stellar show by the Blue Angels
Tens of thousands of Blue Angels fans are already making their way to Pensacola Beach for the culmination of Red, White and Blues Week on Saturday. The Blue Angels won't perform until 2 p.m., weather permitting, but there's plenty of entertainment to keep you busy in the meantime, including more than a dozen civilian performers. Follow along throughout the day for live coverage of the airshow as it unfolds. Traffic leaving Pensacola Beach is slow going as of 3:20 p.m. Live traffic data shows congestion on both Fort Pickens Road and Via De Luna. Congestion on Fort Pickens Road stretches nearly 1.8 miles from the central intersection with Pensacola Beach Boulevard and Via De Luna. On Via De Luna traffic is backed up 3 miles to Avenida 18 from the Pensacola Beach Boulevard intersection. However, traffic was still flowing smoothly once on the Bob Sikes Toll Bridge and through Gulf Breeze. Fans are beginning to trickle out of the Casino Beach parking lot as the 2025 air show comes to a close. Trolleys servicing Portofino Resort/Park East will be staged on Via de Luna in front of Sideline's Sports Bar and the Hampton Inn (facing east). Trolleys servicing Park West will be staged on Fort Pickens Rd. in front of the Surf & Sand Hotel and The Sandshaker (facing west). Both Navarre Bridge lanes to be used for northbound traffic to alleviate congestion The southbound lane of Navarre Beach Bridge will temporarily close at 3 p.m. to assist with traffic control following the Blue Angels airshow. This temporary closure will allow both lanes to be used for northbound traffic only, helping to ease congestion as attendees exit the beach following the airshow. The southbound lane is expected to reopen within two hours, depending on traffic flow. Motorists needing access to Navarre Beach during this temporary closure should plan to go through Pensacola Beach and travel through the Gulf Islands National Seashore along Highway 399 (J. Earle Bowden Way). The Blue Angels performance kicks off with the team's beloved support aircraft, Fat Albert. Fat Albert will typically fly for about 15 minutes before the Blue Angels take to the skies for the next 45. Swimmers were briefly allowed back in the Gulf, but are being cleared out as the Blue Angels prepare to fly. The Pensacola Beach Air Show isn't where all the action is happening, as Escambia County's EMS tent is seeing patients for everything from heat to feet. While heat related illnesses make up the majority of cases that walk through their portable emergency room, they've also been seeing a variety of foot lacerations, including fish hooks in the feet to scooter-related injuries requiring stitches. EMS Chief Christopher Watts said that they've treated about 20 people so far on Saturday, but expect they could get up to about 50 by the end of the day. They tripled the size of their EMS tent this year, with two physicians working, to allow for more room for patients and equipment, as well as space to operate when necessary. Since the Gulf is now cleared during the planes in the sky, it's important to take preventative action for heat-related illnesses by seeking shade, hydrating or visiting the beach's cooling station. If beachgoers are experiencing severe symptoms such as lightheadedness or passing out, they are encouraged to visit the tan EMS tent or call 911 where they will pick them up. Watts said they have even been able to assist with patients coming from boats out on the water. The goal is to treat patients as quickly and efficiently as they can, without having them miss out on too much of the fun. 'It's a huge coordinated effort,' Watts said. 'We're out here because we want everyone to enjoy the show and have a safe time.' The Pensacola Beach Air Show had a brief delay as pop-up storms formed over the Pensacola area. Small pop-up storms have formed over Pensacola, and delayed the Titan Aerobatic Team from taking off at the Pensacola International Airport. All of the civilian acts take off from the Pensacola airport. Pensacola Beach remains free of storms, but small thunderstorms have formed and quickly dissipated over the mainland Pensacola area in the last 90 minutes. The airshow was only delayed about five minutes before the Titan Aerobatic Team was able to begin performing. The team performs synchronized loops and bomb bursts in their WWII-era AT-6 Texans. The opening acts of the show are winding down and the Blue Angels are set to take center stage at 2 p.m. Officials plan to briefly reopen the waters beneath the air show box between roughly 1:30-1:45 p.m. for swimming. Here's what you should know as the Blues prepare to fly: When will the Blue Angels fly? The Blue Angels always close out the air show at 2 p.m. alongside the team's beloved support aircraft, Fat Albert. Fat Albert will typically fly for about 15 minutes before the Blue Angels take to the skies for the next 45. How low do the Blue Angels fly during an air show? Not every air show is the same, and because safety is paramount, the range of maneuvers the team performs depends entirely upon the conditions at the time of the show. That said, in general, the infamous Sneak Pass is the closest they'll get to the ground. During this maneuver, the Lead Solo will "sneak" up on the crowd from behind and pass only 50 feet above it. Earbuds are recommended to protect your ears, but nothing will save you from the rumbling you'll feel in your chest as it passes overhead. What planes do the Blue Angels fly? In 2021, the Blue Angels transitioned from the Boeing F/A-18 Hornet, which the team has flown since 1986, to the Boeing F/A-18 Super Hornet. The new Super Hornets are 25% larger, can fly 40% further and remain on station 80% longer. How fast do the Blue Angels fly? The fastest the Blue Angels fly during an air show is 700 mph during its Sneak Pass maneuver. The slowest speed is around 120 mph during the Section High Alpha maneuver. When Pensacola Beach crowds watched in awe as Chandler Howard, aviation survival technician or 'rescue swimmer,' dived out of a helicopter for a demonstration - Allyson Snipes was witnessing just a typical day of work for her husband from the sand. When a swimmer is in danger and needs to be pulled up into a helicopter, Howard is the one called to the scene, getting them to safety. While Snipes was filled with immense pride and couldn't help herself from saying, 'that's my husband!,' it's also a dangerous job that most people don't typically get to witness. 'Today's or very fun and lighthearted, I think it gives you a little sneak peak into all the stuff they go through, how important it is and how dangerous it can be,' she said. Snipes, who made the trip from Mobile with some friends to watch him, described the moment as 'surreal' getting to see him free fall from a helicopter for the first time. 'It was just cool getting to see all the little kids cheering for him … It was a really surreal moment,' she said. 'it's not really something I get to see him do.' USAF B-1B Lancer arrives to tease the raw power and speed of the legendary swing-wing bomber. Red Bull Air Force team performs the 'Presentation of the Colors' by skydiving with the American Flag – landing at show center. Expect aerobatics from helo pilot Aaron Fitzgerald and pilot Kevin Coleman in his Extra 330 SC, too. B-1B Lancer comes back for more action and maneuvers to impress. RJ Gritter is next overhead, flying a red, white, and blue Decathlon and bringing high-energy aerobatics to Pensacola for the first time. The father-son duo of Ken and Austin Rieder with Redline Airshows will deliver formation thrills and precision flying in their RV-8s. Next up, the four-man Titan Aerobatic Team performs synchronized loops and bomb bursts in their WWII-era AT-6 Texans. Kevin Coleman and Aaron Fitzgerald team up again in a high-adrenaline, two-aircraft routine to finish up with the Red Bull Air Force finale before a short 10-minute water break. For those hesitant to stray far from their set-up in the sand, the Blues Beachside Bazaar has tents stationed outside the Gulfside Pavilion until 4 p.m., sponsored by the Pensacola Blue Wahoos. There, not only can you find a diverse variety of food and beverages, including lumpia, gyros and smoked turkey legs, you'll also find IV hydration stations, beach gear, even Blue Angels themed earrings. Some local businesses have also set up stations, including Jeremiah's Italian Ice. It's a smash burger Saturday for Dothan, Alabama, resident Brad Paul and his daughter Lizzy Jo Paul, who decided to forgo their packed lunch and visit Shotgun food stand's grill. 'We brought sandwiches to the beach, and we're like….'maybe we need something else,'' Brad said. As the annual Veterans Flight takes the sky at the Pensacola Beach Air Show, retired Marine Corp Capt. Jerry Crutcher watches in admiration with his wife of 59 years at his side at The Dock beach bar. Not even a heart surgery could stop him from making the trip back out to Pensacola Beach from Longview, Texas, after seeing the Blues fly a few years ago. When Crutcher considers what makes the Blues shows so spectacular, it's what they symbolize. They put on display the teamwork and precision the military exudes on a daily basis that often is invisible to the public. 'We could be flying in formation in Vietnam, during thunderstorms,' he said. 'It puts forth the training and purpose. Everything that they do here flying is used in combat.' During the air shows, the Blues are regarded as heroes and spectators line up to watch with pride and patriotism. When they do, it's a win for the military as a whole, he said. 'We're all a team,' he said. 'There's no one person out there that does anything.' Heavy traffic congestion going to Pensacola Beach is now spanning the entire length of the Bob Sikes Bridge and onto U.S. 98 in Gulf Breeze. As of 10:50 a.m., traffic slowdowns were beginning in Gulf Breeze north of Daniel Street. On the other side of Santa Rosa Island, traffic is heaving across the Navarre Beach Causeway, but traffic is flowing smoothly from Navarre Beach to Pensacola Beach along Earle Bowden Way. The civilian flight demonstration acts have begun. Here's what you're about to see, in order. The Black Ducks in WWII-era aircraft Sheldon Heatherington in a Zenith 75 STOL named 'Redbird' Gene Valentino in an Icon A-5 Tanner Matheny in a 1946 Navion named 'Olivia' Veterans Flight team in their WWII-era Stearman biplanes honoring WWII and Korean War veterans, led by Roy Kinsey HT-18 training helicopters from TAW-5 aboard NAS Whiting Field VT-10 flying T-6 Texans from TAW-6 aboard NAS Pensacola U.S. Coast Guard Search & Rescue demo from an MH-65E Dolphin Strangers are settling in as neighbors along the Casino Beach shoreline, bonded over survival stories of parking spot hunting and hauling tents and tables onto the sand before sunrise. Foley resident Alexis Klein left home in the dark at 2 a.m. with dreams of seeing the Blues soar over the fishing pier. While Klein had never seen the Blues fly before, they came prepared with an umbrella for shade, an excess of water and food and a prime spot on the shoreline to the pier's side. 'I've heard people say you can feel it when they come by over the pier, I wanna know what that's like,' Klein said. Klein's neighbors, Mitch Brookhyser and his girlfriend Stokke (one word, like Madonna,) strolled into the beach from Panama City at about 6:20 a.m., arriving to a packed beach and medians lined up with cars. Even so, they were able to miraculously secure a spot on the shoreline, table set up with a red and white checkered tablecloth marking their territory. The two are super fans of the Blues, having seen them many times before in California. For this show, their goal is set on one thing: seeing the Blues soar 10-feet above the pier. Pensacola Beach lifeguards are flying green flags due to generally calm conditions in the gulf. The water will be closed for the duration of the airshow, inside of the airshow box. However there will be a brief water break in between the civilian acts and the Blue Angels. Traffic is starting to get heavy coming onto Santa Rosa Island, with congestion backing up all the way to the Bob Sikes Bridge. Traffic is still flowing, but it's at a much slower rate than the 35 mph posted speed limit. Escambia County issued a reminder to those attending the Pensacola Beach Air Show that flying drones and kites while planes are performing is prohibited. During Friday's practice show, several drones were detected while aircraft were performing. To avoid any potential disasters, drones and kites must remain down within a 5-mile radius of the air show. BRACE, Visit Pensacola Beach and ProHealth have teamed up to host a cooling and hydration station at the Pensacola Beach Visitor Information Center in the Casino Beach parking lot. Air show attendees are encouraged to cool off and hydrate often to avoid any serious heat-related injuries. The Blue Angels and more than a dozen other military and civilian aerobatic performers will wow hometown crowds on Saturday with nearly five hours of high-speed displays and maneuvers. The 2025 Pensacola Beach Air Show starts with a mix of military and civilian aerobatic demonstrations at 10:30 a.m. The official air box will close, and lifeguards will clear the water around 11:40 a.m., which is when the official performers will take Blue Angels always close out the air show at 2 p.m. alongside the team's beloved support aircraft, Fat Albert. Fat Albert will typically fly for about 15 minutes before the Blue Angels take to the skies for the next 45. While there's still technically a chance for thunderstorms on Saturday at Pensacola Beach, the weather is set up for a just about perfect beach day to watch the Pensacola Beach Air Show with the Blue Angels. The National Weather Service official forecast calls for a 30% chance of thunderstorms Saturday at the beach; however, the best chance of rain isn't until after 4 p.m. If the past two days are any guide, the weather could turn out perfect on the final day of the beach air show. The last two days had the chance of showers between 40% and 60%, but rain that developed during both days stayed well north or south of Pensacola Beach. The forecast for Saturday calls for a high temperature of 89 degrees with a heat index of 102. At 2 p.m., when the Blue Angels will begin their show, the chance of rain is only 24%, with mostly sunny skies. Visibility is forecast to be more than 10 miles, so beachgoers should have clear views all day. The rip current risk for the beach remains low, so Pensacola Beach Lifeguards will likely fly green flags all day. The Casino Beach parking lot is closed, but the Santa Rosa Island Authority has three open-air trolleys and four buses running an extended route between Park West and Park East from 6:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday. Before the show: The trolleys will service passengers from Park East, located a mile east of Portofino Resort, and Park West to the show center at Casino Beach throughout the indicated hours. Passengers will only be picked up and dropped off at designated trolley stops, which will be marked with a bright Escambia County Area Transit-branded feather flag. After the show: Trolleys servicing Portofino Resort/Park East will be staged on Via de Luna in front of Sideline's Sports Bar and the Hampton Inn (facing east). Trolleys servicing Park West will be staged on Fort Pickens Road in front of the Surf & Sand Hotel and The Sandshaker (facing west). The Escambia County Sheriff's Office said both the Casino Beach parking lot and the Quietwater Beach parking lot are full. The Casino Beach parking lot stays mostly full overnight, with many people setting up their claim to a spot at the beach as early as possible on Saturday. Traffic coming onto Santa Rosa Island on Saturday morning is flowing smoothly, though there is congestion already near the Via De Luna Drive and Fort Pickens Road intersection. With the two closest public parking lots closed, the best place to park will be at Park East or Park West and ride the free trolley to Casino Beach. The trolley service begins running at 6:30 a.m. and will run until 6 p.m. The Blue Angels put on another stellar show during their dress rehearsal Friday, and posted about their excitement for today's official show. "There's nothing like performing over our hometown, and today's demo at the Pensacola Beach Air Show was one for the books," the Blues posted on Facebook Friday. "Huge thanks to everyone who came out and brought the energy—we felt it up there!" "We've got one more show tomorrow, and we can't wait to do it all again. See you at 2:00 p.m. for the grand finale!"
