And just when it seems like a brand is in the clear, a recall can be bumped up in severity as new information comes to light. That's exactly what happened this week, when the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued a Class I risk level for a wide range of sushi products originally recalled by Harris Teeter back in May. The upgrade stems from a batch of cucumbers received by the company that may be contaminated with salmonella—a development serious enough to signal 'a reasonable probability that the use of or exposure to a violative product will cause serious adverse health consequences or death.' 😋😋🍳🍔 According to the FDA, the Class I risk classification was issued on June 27. The affected products were distributed to Harris Teeter locations across Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Maryland, North Carolina, Virginia and the District of Columbia. So far, no illnesses have been reported in connection to the recall. But the FDA noted that salmonella infections can, in rare cases, turn fatal—contributing to roughly 450 deaths in the U.S. each year. The bacteria typically causes gastrointestinal illness and fever, with symptoms showing up between 12 and 72 hours after exposure and lasting up to a week. Anyone with reason for concern should keep an eye out for symptoms like diarrhea, fever and abdominal cramps. FDA issues most dangerous recall for sushi that carries 'reasonable risk of DEATH'
The FDA has updated its recall warning for sushi sold at a popular grocery store to the highest danger classification. ZENSHI sushi products sold by Harris Teeter in seven states and DC were recalled on May 20 after it was discovered that cucumbers used to make the sushi had potentially be contaminated with salmonella. The supermarket announced the sweeping recall in May, urging customers in those states to dispose of the products if they had them or return them to the store. The classification upgrade brings it to Class I, the highest risk level the FDA can designated a recalled product. A Class I risk classification represents 'a situation in which there is a reasonable probability that the use of or exposure to a violative product will cause serious adverse health consequences or death.' The salmonella risk is believed to stem from the use of cucumbers from Bedner Growers Inc that have also been recalled after being sold in 18 states that has caused 45 illnesses and 16 hospitalizations. Salmonella is a type of bacteria that causes salmonellosis, which causes nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal cramping, and sometimes bloody stool. Many people with salmonellosis also develop a fever, which can become severe and require hospitalization. And the severe GI upset can lead to dehydration. Adults 65 and older, children under 5 years, and people with weakened immune systems are more likely to get very sick from Salmonella, caused by eating foods contaminated with animal feces. Illness usually occurs within 12 to 72 hours after eating contaminated food and usually lasts four to seven days. Salmonella sickens 1.3 million Americans each year, leading to 26,500 hospitalizations and about 400 deaths. Harris Teeter did not confirm that the cucumbers behind the sushi recall were those grown by Bedner Growers, Inc. Still, the US is currently in the midst of a massive Bedner cucumber recall on the heels of a wave of salmonella illnesses across multiple states. Bedner Growers supplied the cucumbers to Fresh Start Produce Sales, which then distributed to Harris Teeter stores in Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Maryland, North Carolina, South Carolina, Virginia and the District of Columbia. The tainted cucumbers have been linked by the FDA to a salmonella outbreak that has sickened at least 45 people in 15 states. The outbreak was uncovered during an April follow-up to a 2024 incident that sickened 551 people and hospitalized 155 across 34 states and Washington, D.C. Investigators traced the earlier outbreak to salmonella bacteria found in untreated canal water used by Bedner Growers and Thomas Produce Company farms. In addition to sushi recalls, businesses have issued similar notices for other items including the risky cucumbers, including snack trays and salads. Last month, Supreme Produce recalled Yummi Sushi products sold at Kroger grocery stores linked to Bedner cucumbers. The CDC said about the recalled produce last month: 'If you have cucumbers at home and can't tell where they are from, throw them away.' Health officials added: 'When eating out over the next week, ask if cucumbers were from Bedner Growers or Fresh Start Produce Sales Inc.' Salmonellosis isn't a stomach bug. The infection typically begins with relentless, watery diarrhea that can become bloody, paired with severe cramping. Patients may spike fevers over 102 degrees Fahrenheit, vomit repeatedly, and become dangerously dehydrated, leading to dry, cracked lips, sunken eyes, and dizziness so severe it makes standing feel impossible. In the worst cases, the bacteria can escape the gut and enter the bloodstream, triggering life-threatening infections in the bones, brain, or heart. Kroger supermarkets has officially initiated its mass closures of more than 60 underperforming stores nationwide. The chain is set to shutter the stores under the Kroger, Harris Teeter, and Pick 'n Save banners by the end of 2026, making it one of the largest closure rounds in the company's history. Several locations USA Today confirmed would be closing for good will shutter between July 18 and October 19, its latest being two weeks ago in Dickinson, Texas. However, many stores have yet to announce shutter dates, including all impacted locations in Wisconsin. Besides Texas and Wisconsin, customers will be losing Kroger stores in Georgia, Illinois , Indiana , Kentucky, Maryland, North Carolina, Virginia, and West Virginia. The news came during Kroger's first-quarter earnings report , where Kroger emphasized its intention to reinvest savings from the closures into improving the customer experience. 'Kroger is committed to reinvesting these savings back into the customer experience, and as a result, this will not impact full-year guidance,' the report reads. Despite the scale of the closures, the company said no layoffs are expected. Employees at affected locations will be offered positions at nearby stores or in other areas of the business. Kroger, which operates nearly 2,800 stores nationwide, has not yet released a list of all affected locations. The company suffered a small decline in sales during its first quarter, dropping to $45.1 bill from its $45.3 billion earnings during this time last year. Its net income also fell to $866 million, down from $962 million. While the price drops were minor blows for Kroger, the company is still pleased with the results. 'Kroger delivered solid first quarter results, with strong sales led by pharmacy, eCommerce and fresh,' said interim CEO Ron Sargent. 'We made good progress in streamlining our priorities, enhancing customer focus, and running great stores to improve the shopping experience.' Kroger has since raised its full-year forecast for same-store sales (excluding fuel) to between 2.25 percent and 3.25 percent due to a growing demand for fresh foods, store brands and digital services. 'We are confident in our ability to build on our momentum, deliver value for customers, invest in associates and generate attractive returns for shareholders,' Sargent said. Despite the closures, Kroger is planning to spend between $3.6 billion and $3.8 billion this year on capital projects, including new store construction and renovations. The company aims to open around 30 new stores by the end of 2025, focusing on markets with stronger performance and growth potential. 'New store openings are the biggest driver of market share gains, and we're continuing to look at that,' Sargent said.
