A Massive Recall on a Variety of Sushi Products Has Just Been Upgraded for a Serious Reason—Here's What to Know
As long as our favorite foods and products are made at scale, recalls will always be part of the deal. And just when it seems like a brand is in the clear, a recall can be bumped up in severity as new information comes to light.
That's exactly what happened this week, when the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued a Class I risk level for a wide range of sushi products originally recalled by Harris Teeter back in May. The upgrade stems from a batch of cucumbers received by the company that may be contaminated with salmonella—a development serious enough to signal 'a reasonable probability that the use of or exposure to a violative product will cause serious adverse health consequences or death.'

According to the FDA, the Class I risk classification was issued on June 27. The affected products were distributed to Harris Teeter locations across Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Maryland, North Carolina, Virginia and the District of Columbia.
So far, no illnesses have been reported in connection to the recall. But the FDA noted that salmonella infections can, in rare cases, turn fatal—contributing to roughly 450 deaths in the U.S. each year. The bacteria typically causes gastrointestinal illness and fever, with symptoms showing up between 12 and 72 hours after exposure and lasting up to a week.
Anyone with reason for concern should keep an eye out for symptoms like diarrhea, fever and abdominal cramps. In more severe cases, infections can lead to high fever, body aches, headaches, lethargy, rashes and even blood in the urine.A full list of the recalled products is included below—but fair warning, it's a long one. Can Gut Bacteria Be The Key To Banishing Forever Chemicals?
Researchers at the University of Cambridge say they have identified a family of bacterial species that can help remove toxic PFAS, better known as 'forever chemicals.' PFAS (Perfluoroalkyl and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances) have been shown to cause health issues like decreased fertility, cardiovascular disease, developmental delays in children, and increased risk of certain cancers. Now, researchers say a microbe naturally found in the human gut may be able to absorb these forever chemicals and help remove them from the body. The researchers introduced nine of these bacterial species into the guts of mice in an attempt to 'humanize' the rodents' microbiomes. Standards for PFOA and PFOS, two primary subtypes of PFAS, will remain at four parts per trillion; however, utilities will be given an extension to 2031 to comply with the limitation. Geographic Gaps in Maternity Care Cost Lives
TOPLINE: Analysis of 14,772,210 live births revealed that counties designated as maternity care deserts faced significantly higher maternal mortality rates than those with full access to care. Desert counties showed a 36% higher risk for maternal death and a 26% increased risk for pregnancy-related mortality. METHODOLOGY: The analysis included county-level data from the CDC Wide-Ranging Online Data for Epidemiologic Research database from January 2018 to December 2021. A total of 14,772,210 live births were analyzed across four county categories: desert (n = 720,858), low access (n = 708,668), moderate access (n = 431,188), and full access (n = 12,911,496). Researchers restricted the study population to individuals aged 15-44 years to enhance accuracy and mitigate misclassification. Primary outcome measures included maternal mortality rate per 100,000 live births, with pregnancy-related mortality rate as a secondary outcome.
