Nick Folk worked out for Jets on Monday
Caden Davis and Harrison Mevis have been less than perfect in their kicking competition at Jets' camp. The Jets, thus, appear to have interest in an old friend. Brian Costello of the New York Post reports that the Jets worked out Nick Folk, who kicked for the team from 2010-16. Folk, 40, has played for four other teams in his 17 seasons. He spent the past two years in Tennessee, where he was 21-of-22 on field goals in 2024 and 29-of-30 in 2023. He missed only two extra points in his two seasons with the Titans. Folk, who made his only Pro Bowl in 2007 as a rookie with the Cowboys, has made 84.3 percent of his field goals in his career. Mevis played in the UFL, and Davis is a rookie out of Ole Miss.

NFL analyst picks 'Thiccer Kicker' as easiest Jet to root for
As a young team with a new head coach and quarterback, the New York Jets are an easy team to root for, especially if you find it easy to sympathize with a long-suffering fanbase. The Jets' pairing of first-time head coach Aaron Glenn with an electric young quarterback in Justin Fields has made waves all offseason, and everyone wants to see them succeed. In fact, with how popular Fields already is as a player, it may come as a surprise that one analyst did not pick him as his favorite Jet to root for. Dan Parr, a content creator and writer for the NFL since 2013, put together a list of one player from each AFC team that anyone can root for, and his pick for the Jets was kicker Harrison Mevis, better known by his nickname: the 'Thiccer Kicker'. Advertisement Defending his decision, Parr writes, 'I'm not going to pass on a chance to pull for a guy known as the 'Thiccer Kicker.' At 5-foot-11, 243 pounds, Mevis signed with the Jets last month after impressing (20 of 21 on field goals) in his first season with the UFL's Birmingham Stallions. This is a second NFL chance for Mevis, who was in camp with the Panthers a year ago as an undrafted rookie out of Missouri, where he was a first-team All-American in 2021.' The Jets signed Mevis to a one-year deal last month and paved a road for him to earn the starting job in 2025. They had already parted ways with Greg Zuerlein, who connected on just 77.7% of his field goal attempts over three years with the Jets, then released Anders Carlson the day after signing Mevis. Now, it's a two-way battle between the Thiccer Kicker and undrafted free agent rookie Caden Davis. Interestingly enough, Mevis is not the first kicker to move from a spring professional football league to the NFL. Brandon Aubrey spent two seasons in the United States Football League (USFL), also with the Birmingham Stallions, before signing with the Dallas Cowboys in 2023. He went on to be a wild success story, connecting on 94.7% of his field goals in his first NFL season and making a career-best 65 yarder just last year. He had a bit of a regression in 2024 but is still considered one of the league's most reliable kickers. It's always easy to root for guys who take alternative routes to the NFL, such as playing in a spring league for very little money. Jets fans will of course be rooting for their kicker to succeed, but football fans everywhere should have an easy time rooting for the Thiccer Kicker.

'Thiccer Kicker' Harrison Mevis returns to the NFL, joins 2 Missouri football teammates
Harrison Mevis has earned a second shot in the NFL. The Missouri football standout, nicknamed the 'Thiccer Kicker' during his time in Columbia, signed with the New York Jets on Wednesday, according to a news release from the team. The Jets also waived Auburn grad and kicker Anders Carlson, which means Mevis, who most recently played for the Birmingham Stallions in the UFL, is in a two-horse race for starting duties. Advertisement Mevis looks set to compete for a spot on the Jets' 53-man roster with Ole Miss grad Caden Davis, who signed with the Jets as an undrafted free agent in May. With Mevis on board, there are currently two kickers on the Jets' roster. The Mizzou grad also joins the roster with Armand Membou and Brady Cook, two of his former teammates. Membou was the No. 7-overall pick in this year's NFL Draft by the Jets, and Cook signed with the team as an undrafted free agent shortly after the draft. Mevis was 20-of-21 on field-goal attempts in the regular season for the Stallions, which was the second-best conversion percentage (95.2%) in the UFL behind just former Indianapolis Colts kicker Rodrigo Blankenship, who went 21-of-22 (95.4%). Advertisement The former Tiger, who hails from Warsaw, Indiana, longest field goal this season came from 56 yards out, and his only miss came from 63 yards. Mevis' 20 total field goals this year were the third-most in the UFL. The Stallions topped the UFL Conference in the regular season with a 7-3 record. Mevis was named the UFL Special Teams Player of the Week on May 15 after a 3-of-3 performance that included a 52-yard make. While at Missouri, Mevis broke the SEC record with a 61-yard field goal as time expired to knock off Kansas State in September 2023. He is the all-time points leader in Mizzou's history with 405 career points, as he passed previous record-holder Jeff Wolfert in his senior season. Mevis was 86-of-103 (83.5%) on field goals in his MU career and holds another program record with 12 makes from more than 50 yards. Jets sign 'The Thiccer Kicker' Harrison Mevis and release veteran Anders Carlson
The New York Jets signed United Football League standout kicker Harrison Mevis and released veteran kicker Anders Carlson on Wednesday. Mevis, who earned the popular nickname 'The Thiccer Kicker' for his 5-foot-11, 243-pound frame, was 20 of 21 on field goal attempts for the Birmingham Stallions this season. He's also Missouri's career scoring leader with 405 points and holds the school mark with 86 field goals. Advertisement The 23-year-old Mevis will compete with rookie Caden Davis for the kicking job in training camp. The Jets' special teams unit has been revamped under new coach Aaron Glenn and coordinator Chris Banjo. Veteran kicker Greg Zuerlein and punter Thomas Morstead were both released during the offseason. With Carlson's departure, New York has no kickers or punters — including Kai Kroeger and Austin McNamara — who have played in a regular-season game. Mevis, a freshman All-American in 2020 and first-team All-American in 2021, booted a game-winning 61-yard field goal for Missouri against Kansas State in 2023, to set the SEC record for longest kick. The Warsaw, Indiana, native was signed by Carolina as an undrafted free agent in May 2024 and waived by the Panthers during training camp last summer. Mevis signed with Birmingham last December. Advertisement Carlson went 8 for 10 on field goals in five games last season for the Jets while filling in for an injured Zuerlein. He was also 9 of 11 on extra points. Carlson, a sixth-round pick in 2023 by Green Bay, has also kicked for the Packers and San Francisco 49ers. ___ AP NFL: Dennis Waszak Jr., The Associated Press

NFL fans react to the New York Jets' unexpected signing of the 'Thiccer Kicker': 'Dude's a legend'
With instability at their kicker position, the New York Jets have made yet another change after cutting one of their special teams stars earlier this offseason. Last month, the Jets announced that they would be axing kicker Greg Zuerlein after hitting a career-low in field goals made. The move left former Raiders star Anders Carlson as the only kicker left on the roster. On Wednesday, Carlson was released from the team. In his place, the Jets signed a kicker from the United Football League: Harrison Mevis, known on social media as the 'Thiccer Kicker'. Mevis - who clocks in at 5-foot-11, 243 pounds - spent this past NFL season on the practice squad of the Carolina Panthers before inking a deal with the UFL's Birmingham Stallions. The Stallions made the UFL playoffs, but lost to the Michigan Panthers in the conference finals. The New York Jets have signed former UFL kicker Harrison Mevis to a contract Mevis converted an impressive 20-of-21 field goal attempts with the Stallions - including a longest kick of 54 yards. Mevis earned a reputation in college at the University of Missouri - kicking a career 83.5 percent while in school. That included knocking through an FBS-leading 61-yard, game-winning field goal to upset No. 15 Kansas State in his senior year. Fans celebrated the return of the 'Thiccer Kicker' to the league. One user on X posted, 'Glad he's getting a chance', while another said 'Dude's a legend.' Another user said, 'Cannot believe Mevis was in the UFL. What an insult.' 'That game winner against K State a couple years ago is still one of the most clutch kicks I've ever seen,' a third user posted. 'Mevis (the thicker kicker) was someone I had ranked as my top kicker in his draft class. No reason it should have taken this long,' another person wrote.
