Jets sign 'The Thiccer Kicker' Harrison Mevis and release veteran Anders Carlson

The New York Jets signed United Football League standout kicker Harrison Mevis and released veteran kicker Anders Carlson on Wednesday.
Mevis, who earned the popular nickname 'The Thiccer Kicker' for his 5-foot-11, 243-pound frame, was 20 of 21 on field goal attempts for the Birmingham Stallions this season. He's also Missouri's career scoring leader with 405 points and holds the school mark with 86 field goals.

The 23-year-old Mevis will compete with rookie Caden Davis for the kicking job in training camp. The Jets' special teams unit has been revamped under new coach Aaron Glenn and coordinator Chris Banjo.
Veteran kicker Greg Zuerlein and punter Thomas Morstead were both released during the offseason. With Carlson's departure, New York has no kickers or punters — including Kai Kroeger and Austin McNamara — who have played in a regular-season game.
Mevis, a freshman All-American in 2020 and first-team All-American in 2021, booted a game-winning 61-yard field goal for Missouri against Kansas State in 2023, to set the SEC record for longest kick.
The Warsaw, Indiana, native was signed by Carolina as an undrafted free agent in May 2024 and waived by the Panthers during training camp last summer. Mevis signed with Birmingham last December.

Carlson went 8 for 10 on field goals in five games last season for the Jets while filling in for an injured Zuerlein. He was also 9 of 11 on extra points. Carlson, a sixth-round pick in 2023 by Green Bay, has also kicked for the Packers and San Francisco 49ers.

Miami Dolphins' Bayron Matos airlifted to hospital after training camp injury

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. (AP) — Miami Dolphins offensive lineman Bayron Matos suffered an undisclosed injury at the end of Wednesday's practice and was flown to a hospital on a helicopter. The injury happened in the final minutes of Day 1 of the Dolphins' training camp. Matos, a second-year offensive tackle, was airlifted in stable condition, the team said. The Dolphins did not release information on the injury. 'It's a really heartbreaking part of the game,' said Dolphins offensive lineman Austin Jackson. 'Very tough.' Matos, born in Los Mina, Santo Domingo, went undrafted in 2024 but signed with the Dolphins as a free agent through the NFL's International Player Pathway Program — an initiative that gives athletes from countries outside the U.S. a chance to play in the NFL. He spent time on Miami's practice squad over the past year before signing a reserve/future contract in January. He has not played in an NFL game. A two-sport athlete in basketball and baseball in his youth, Matos, 24, only started playing football in 2022. He walked on to the South Florida football team in 2022 with no prior experience. ___ AP NFL: Alanis Thames, The Associated Press

Dolphins OT airlifted to hospital, in stable condition after training camp practice

Miami Dolphins second-year offensive tackle Bayron Matos was transported via helicopter to the hospital and is in stable condition after suffering an injury in a Wednesday training camp practice, the team told reporters. Details of the injury and the circumstances that caused it aren't yet known. Matos, 24, is a Dominican Republic-native who joined the Dolphins last year as part of the NFL's International Player Pathway Program. The 6'7 lineman played collegiate basketball for New Mexico and South Florida. During his time at USF, Matos walked on to the football team, but played just 22 total snaps with the team. But Matos caught the eye of NFL scouts last spring when the 313-pound tackle ran a 4.88 40-yard dash. After joining the Dolphins as an undrafted free agent, Matos spent his entire rookie season on the team's practice squad. While the Dolphins have a pair of starting offensive tackles in Patrick Paul and Austin Jackson, Matos is one of several linemen, along with Larry Borom, Jackson Carman, and Kion Smith competing for reserve roles at tackle.

NFL analyst compares Jalen Hurts to a 'Porsche' when describing Eagles usage of star QB

In a recent episode of Good Morning Football, former Notre Dame and NFL linebacker, as well as NFL Network analyst, Manti Te'o, compared the Super Bowl MVP to a Porsche Jalen Hurts has drawn many comparisons, but none as accurate as the one former Notre Dame star linebacker and NFL Network analyst Manti Te'o came up with for the Eagles star. During a recent episode of Good Morning Football, the former Notre Dame and NFL linebacker compared the Super Bowl MVP to a Porsche. "Jalen Hurts is a Porsche and the Eagles use him like a Porsche" Hurts led the Eagles to a 15-2 (.882) record in games he started and finished last season (including playoffs). Since 2022, Hurts is 42-12 (.778) as a starting QB, which marks the 2nd-best winning percentage in the NFL, trailing only Patrick Mahomes (.828, 48-10). Last season, Hurts finished the regular season with career highs in completion percentage (68.7%) and passer rating (103.7), while leading all quarterbacks with 14 rushing TDs (T-5th overall). He is the first player with 13+ rushing TDs in three straight years since LaDainian Tomlinson (six, 2002-07).
