Another accolade for stellar West Indies all-rounder
Hayley Matthews has added to her already glittering resume in the game, beating out Tazmin Brits and West Indies teammate Afy Fletcher for June 2025's ICC Women's Player of the Month. Hayley Matthews leads from the front | WCWCQ 2025 It's Matthews' fourth ICC Player of the Month accolade having also claimed the honour in November 2021, October 2023 and April 2024. With her fourth win, Matthews is tied with Australia's Ash Gardner for the most ICC Women's Player of the Month honours. The West Indies skipper was recognised after another strong showing mostly in the shortest format, claiming another Player of the Series trophy in a 2-1 T20I victory at home over South Africa. Hayley Matthews' magic with the bat | WCWCQ 2025 Upon the news, Matthews was quick to look at the bigger while appreciating another accolade. 'It's an honour to receive the Player of the Month award again. I've been pleased with my form recently, but more importantly, it's been great to contribute to the team's success — especially in a hard-fought T20I series against South Africa," Matthews said. "Recognition like this is appreciated, but my focus remains on what's ahead. There's a lot more I want to achieve, both personally and with this team. We're heading in the right direction, and I'm excited about where we can go from here.' Matthews made 147 runs at a strike rate of 120.49 and an average of 73.50 in the series, chiming in with two wickets bowling her vital off-spin to the West Indies cause. After a modest 19 in the first match, she anchored the innings with unbeaten knock of 63* and then 65, leading West Indies to fight back from a 0-1 deficit to win the series 2-1. While not at her best in the ODI series and hampered by a shoulder complaint which she is set to undergo surgery for Matthews still contributed for her team, registering 40 and 56 with the bat, and taking four wickets at 34.25 in a 2-1 defeat. WI-W vs SA-W: West Indies Women clinches T20I series 2-1 to end 12-year drought against Proteas
West Indies Women registered its first bilateral T20I series win over South Africa Women since the start of 2013 as skipper Hayley Matthews struck a 50-ball 65 to guide her team to a six-wicket win in the third and final match at Three Ws Oval in Barbados on Monday. The Caribbean side chased down a 148-run target with nine balls to spare to complete a 2-1 series win. Shemaine Campbelle chipped in with a crucial 42 and Chinelle Henry imparted the finishing touches with an unbeaten 11-ball 20. Earlier, 20-year-old Miane Smit's unbeaten 59 that guide the Proteas to a respectable 147 for six in 20 overs after they elected to bat in the series decider. She was supported by skipper Laura Wolvaardt's 24-ball 28 but the duo couldn't form a meaningful partnership. However, Wolvaardt said her team was taking home a lot of positives from its tour of West Indies. 'Disappointed about today's result, of course, particularly as I thought we had enough runs. But we didn't get our bowling lines right – they scored too many runs square of the wicket and we got a few small things wrong,' Wolvaardt said. 'But Hayley played so well, it's difficult to get her out. Overall on the tour I thought we unearthed some good young talent who put their hands up and made a good contribution to the team,' she added. Earlier this month, South Africa had clinched the ODI leg of the tour, winning the three-match series 2-1.

West Indies Women thrash Proteas by 6 wickets to level T20 series
Proteas Women's spinner Nonkululeko Mlaba. Photo: AFP Image: AFP For the first time during the tour of the West Indies, the Proteas Women did not produce a defendable score after batting first against the home side. West Indies Captain Hayley Matthews steered her side home to a 6 wicket victory over the South Africans in the second T20 on Sunday night. With the series now even, no doubt the home team are looking to claim a victory over the green and gold after they lost the ODI series 2-1. Players have noted the slow conditions in West Indies, which favour bowlers, and as such, the home side put the South African to bat first for the fifth consecutive time. The first four overs looked to be in South Africa's favour, but things took a turn after that. Video Player is loading. Next Stay Close ✕ Tazmin Brits, unfortunately, did not deliver her usual performances with the bat, like she did so far this season, falling for 14 runs to an in-form Afy Fletcher. Marizanne Kapp fell for a duck while the Captain Laura Wolvaardt managed to squeeze in 16 runs before she was dismissed. Fletcher took another pivotal wicket for her team after she removed Nadine de Klerk for 20 runs. De Klerk was brought up a little up the order to try and put some runs on the board in the face of a crumbling top order. The West Indies knew they were in control of the game after 100 looked like an impossible task for the Proteas Women to hit, and clamped down on their run rate with the fall of wickets throughout the innings. There was no real momentum for the South African batters to ride and left each one of them with a difficult job - swing things back into 'our favour'. This was too difficult a task, especially with the West Indian bowlers finding their line. With less than five overs to go for their innings, the South Africans were in a really uncomfortable sport - having only reached 79 runs with 6 wickets gone. Chloe Tryon had been removed from the crease, and all hope rested on the last 'dawg' Annerie Dercksen. Dercky and wicketkeeper Karabo Meso put up a last stand for the Proteas with the 34-run partnership that helped them reach a meagre 113/6 wickets in 20 overs. There was just one 6 in the South African innings and four 4s.

Top Allrounder Hayley Matthews To Miss Women's Big Bash League
Last Updated: Melbourne Renegades' Hayley Matthews will miss WBBL season 11 due to a shoulder injury as she is set to undergo surgery. Melbourne Renegades allrounder Hayley Matthews will miss the Women's Big Bash League season 11 due to a shoulder injury, the club announced on Thursday. Matthews, pre-signed by the Renegades ahead of the WBBL Overseas Player Draft, was set for her fourth season in red. However, a shoulder injury sustained during the West Indies' recent ODI series has postponed her WBBL plans. The world's top-ranked T20I all-rounder must withdraw to undergo shoulder surgery. Despite this, she will meet her national commitments, including captaining the West Indies and playing for her Barbados Royals in the Caribbean Premier League, before her surgery later this year. Matthews would have occupied one of the Renegades' picks at Thursday's Big Bash drafts. However, the club now has all three overseas slots to fill during the event. 'We are clearly disappointed Hayley won't be with us this season. She's been instrumental during her time with the Renegades, not just with her performances but with her leadership and professionalism," General Manager James Rosengarten said. 'There's a very close relationship between the Renegades and Hayley, and we know it will continue next year and beyond. Hayley loves this club, and we share in her disappointment at not being available for this year's tournament." Matthews' absence is a blow for the club, given her significant role in the Renegades' remarkable resurgence last season. The team recovered from a bottom-placed finish in WBBL 9 to win their maiden title at the MCG. She had a career-best campaign in WBBL 10, scoring 324 runs at a strike rate of 130.6 and taking 14 wickets, earning her a spot in the WBBL 10 Team of the Tournament.
