Top Allrounder Hayley Matthews To Miss Women's Big Bash League
Melbourne Renegades' Hayley Matthews will miss WBBL season 11 due to a shoulder injury as she is set to undergo surgery.
Melbourne Renegades allrounder Hayley Matthews will miss the Women's Big Bash League season 11 due to a shoulder injury, the club announced on Thursday.
Matthews, pre-signed by the Renegades ahead of the WBBL Overseas Player Draft, was set for her fourth season in red. However, a shoulder injury sustained during the West Indies' recent ODI series has postponed her WBBL plans.
The world's top-ranked T20I all-rounder must withdraw to undergo shoulder surgery. Despite this, she will meet her national commitments, including captaining the West Indies and playing for her Barbados Royals in the Caribbean Premier League, before her surgery later this year.
Matthews would have occupied one of the Renegades' picks at Thursday's Big Bash drafts. However, the club now has all three overseas slots to fill during the event.
'We are clearly disappointed Hayley won't be with us this season. She's been instrumental during her time with the Renegades, not just with her performances but with her leadership and professionalism," General Manager James Rosengarten said.
'There's a very close relationship between the Renegades and Hayley, and we know it will continue next year and beyond. Hayley loves this club, and we share in her disappointment at not being available for this year's tournament."
Matthews' absence is a blow for the club, given her significant role in the Renegades' remarkable resurgence last season. The team recovered from a bottom-placed finish in WBBL 9 to win their maiden title at the MCG.
She had a career-best campaign in WBBL 10, scoring 324 runs at a strike rate of 130.6 and taking 14 wickets, earning her a spot in the WBBL 10 Team of the Tournament.

Suryakumar returns to action after surgery with Asia Cup 2025 in sight
India's preparations for the Asia Cup 2025 received a timely boost as T20I captain Suryakumar Yadav resumed batting at the National Cricket Academy's Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru in late July. The explosive batter, who had undergone sports hernia surgery earlier this year in Germany, is now steadily progressing towards full fitness under the careful supervision of the BCCI medical team. His return to active cricketing drills signals optimism for India, with the Asia Cup just weeks away and the T20 World Cup 2026 campaign beginning to take shape. Notably, India beat Sri Lanka by 10 wickets in the last edition's final to win their eighth Asia Cup title. Recovery in full swing ahead of Asia Cup Suryakumar, who had publicly shared news of his successful surgery in Munich back in June, has now begun structured training. Reports suggest that his workload will be ramped up significantly in the coming weeks as he builds towards match readiness. If his progress continues without setbacks, the 34-year-old is expected to be match-fit in time for the Asia Cup, which begins on September 9 in the UAE. The Indian squad is likely to assemble and travel in the first week of September, using the tournament as a crucial platform to fine-tune combinations ahead of a busy international calendar. Surya's impressive run as T20I captain Suryakumar assumed T20I captaincy following India's T20 World Cup win in June 2024, after Rohit Sharma stepped down from the shortest format. Despite his recent surgery, Surya had been in prime form prior to the layoff. During IPL 2025, he amassed a staggering 717 runs — the highest ever by a Mumbai Indians player in a single season and a record for most runs by a non-opener in the league's history. He also registered an unprecedented streak of 16 consecutive 25+ scores, setting a global benchmark. ALSO READ: India's T20 transformation Under Suryakumar's leadership, India's T20I side has embraced a more aggressive and flexible batting approach. The team notched multiple 200+ totals, including 297 against Bangladesh in October 2024 — the second-highest score in T20I history. His return offers India both leadership and firepower, just when they need it most.

'Hello, you are playing for your country': Gavaskar compares workload debate to jawans at border, drops ODI captaincy hint
Sunil Gavaskar criticised workload management debate, indirectly targeting Jasprit Bumrah for missing two Tests. He also praised Shubman Gill's captaincy in India's 2-2 Test series draw against England and backed him as a future all-format captain. read more India's thrilling six-run win over England at The Oval on Monday, August 4 helped them level the five-match Test series 2-2. Not many believed India could make a comeback after losing the first Test badly at Headingley, but under Shubman Gill's captaincy, the team showed great fight and spirit. Former India captain Sunil Gavaskar was full of praise for Gill, calling him a strong candidate to lead India across all formats. Speaking after the match, Gavaskar said that the selectors might consider Gill as a future all-format captain, even though Rohit Sharma is currently the ODI skipper. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD 'Rohit and Kohli are available for ODIs. They haven't been selected as of yet. Those things will be up to the selection committee. When the ODI series against Australia or the West Indies gets underway, it will be the perfect time to go for the Gill if the selectors want,' Gavaskar said on Sony Sports. 'He is one of the most well-liked players in the team. He is getting those hundreds. If he is not happy with a hundred, he will go for the double hundred. He will then look to get a triple hundred if he is not happy with a double hundred. He got to 269 (at Edgbaston). He was showing that he can't give up. He just wanted to be there and make sure that every run mattered,' he added. Gavaskar slams Bumrah Meanwhile, Gavaskar also gave a strong opinion on the 'workload management' debate that has been a talking point for the past few months. He appeared to send a message to the Indian team management and took an indirect jibe at Jasprit Bumrah, who missed two Tests in the series citing workload concerns. Gavaskar compared the situation to the Indian Army soldiers who guard the country in extreme weather conditions. He even mentioned Rishabh Pant, who came out to bat with a fractured foot during the fourth Test in Manchester, praising his bravery, and lauded Mohammed Siraj for playing all games. 'If you're going to succumb to people talking about workload, then you'll never have your best players on the field. You've got to get them to a situation where you say, 'Hello, you are playing for your country, and when you're playing for your country, you have to forget the aches and pains in your muscles,' Gavaskar told India Today. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD 'Do you think the jawans complain about the cold or the conditions? They are out there, ready to give their lives for the country. You must give your very best for the nation. Don't worry about minor aches and pains. What did Rishabh Pant show you? He came out to bat with a fracture. That's the kind of spirit you want to see from your team,' he added. 'That's what is expected. Don't be held back by small injuries. It is an honour, given to you among 140 crore people, to represent India. You are incredibly lucky, and you should not take that lightly. And we've seen this attitude in Siraj—five Test matches, bowling non-stop,' he said. Bumrah and the Indian team management had already confirmed before the start of the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy series that the premier pacer would play only three matches. However, fans had hoped Bumrah might play one more match, considering the gaps between games, but he did not. Interestingly, India won both Tests that Bumrah missed - Edgbaston and The Oval. Shubman Gill To Become ODI Captain After England Test Heroics? Sunil Gavaskar Gives Clear Take
Legendary batter Sunil Gavaskar has urged the selectors to consider Shubman Gill as captain of India's ODI team. His remarks came after Gill led India to a 2-2 draw in the just-concluded five-match Test series against England. Gill led from the front in his debut series as captain of India as he smashed 754 runs across 10 innings, including three centuries and a double ton. While Rohit Sharma, who retired from Test cricket before the England tour, is the current ODI captain, Gavaskar feels that if the selectors are looking at a new leader, it is the perfect time for them to appoint Gill. "Rohit and Kohli are available for ODIs. They haven't been selected as of yet. Those things will be up to the selection committee. When the ODI series against Australia or the West Indies gets underway, it will be the perfect time to go for the Gill if the selectors want," Gavaskar said after the match. Gavaskar also praised Gill for the way he batted in the Edgbaston Test, and lauded his fighting spirit after he single-handedly won them the game. "He is one of the most well-liked players in the team. He is getting those hundreds. If he is not happy with a hundred, he will go for the double hundred. He will then look to get a triple hundred if he is not happy with a double hundred. He got to 269 (at Edgbaston). He was showing that he can't give up. He just wanted to be there and make sure that every run mattered," he added. India's win at The Oval Test on Monday was their narrowest ever in terms of runs. England began Day 5 needing only 35 runs with four wickets in hand. But Mohammed Siraj and Prasidh Krishna produced sensational bowling performances to script a dramatic turnaround. Siraj finished with 5 for 104, while Prasidh took 4 for 126 - the duo sharing all four wickets to fall on the final morning as India bowled England out for 354. The result gave India 28 points and lifted them to third in the WTC standings, behind Australia and Sri Lanka. More importantly, it marked a powerful statement from a young Indian team - one that fought through setbacks and pressure to deliver when it mattered most.
