Man Wei Chong-Tee Kai Wun eye consistency, not just titles, ahead of Japan and China Opens
KUALA LUMPUR, July 2 — National doubles shuttler Man Wei Chong says he and partner Tee Kai Wun are focused on giving their best rather than obsessing over titles at the Japan and China Open tournaments later this month. The 25-year-old player, who has won two titles this season, is confident that the outcomes would be good if they can maintain a high level of performance. 'We should not be overly concerned about the results. If we maintain our performance, the results will come naturally. 'I believe that is the best approach to easing the presssure on ourselves. We should be forward-looking and give it our all in the second half (of the year),' he told reporters at a training session at Akademi Badminton Malaysia in Bukit Kiara here yesterday. He regarded their semi-final loss at the recent Indonesia Open to homesters Sabar Karyaman Gutama-Moh Reza Pahlevi Isfahani as a valuable lesson in handling pressure from partisan fans. 'Of course, the Indonesian fans would support them. We just had to deal with the situation and hopefully, learn from it,' he added. Wei Chong-Kai Wun won the Indonesia Masters 2025 in January and the Malaysia Masters in May. Previously, national men's doubles head coach Herry Iman Pierngadi has challenged his charges to win at least one title in the two upcoming open tournaments. The Japan Open will be held from July 15 to 20 in Tokyo, while the China Open will take place in Changzhou from July 22 to 27. — Bernama

Malaysia's men's doubles coach Herry sets Japan or China Open title as next target
KUALA LUMPUR, June 24 — National men's doubles head coach Herry Iman Pierngadi remains hungry for success, challenging his players to win either the Japan Open or China Open title next month. Herry said preparations for both tournaments — the Japan Open from July 15-20 in Tokyo and the China Open from July 22-27 in Changzhou — have been progressing smoothly so far. 'The preparation is going very well. I have a personal target and hope the players can win one of the titles (Japan or China Open) for Malaysia,' he told reporters after a training session here today. The Super 750 Japan Open offers a total prize pool of US$950,000 (RM4.04 million), while the China Open, a Super 1000 tournament, promises an even bigger purse of US$2 million. Since taking over as national men's doubles coach in February, Herry has quickly made an impact, guiding 2022 world champions Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik to victory at the 2025 Badminton Asia Championships in April, followed by titles at the Thailand Open and Singapore Open last month. The 62-year-old Indonesian coach also played a key role in helping another Malaysian pair, Man Wei Chong-Tee Kai Wun, clinch the Malaysia Masters last month. At the same time, he acknowledged that other Malaysian pairs, including Wan Arif Wan Junaidi-Yap Roy King and Choong Hon Jian-Muhammad Haikal Nazri, still need time to close the gap with Aaron-Wooi Yik and Wei Chong-Kai Wun. 'Each pair is different. For example, Aaron-Wooi Yik only needed two to three months to adapt to my training style because of their maturity. So I need to give time to the others to catch up with the top pairs,' he said. Nicknamed the Fire Dragon, Herry is a highly regarded coach credited with producing numerous world-class Indonesian pairings, including Olympic gold medallists Candra Wijaya-Tony Gunawan (Sydney 2000) and Hendra Setiawan-Markis Kido (Beijing 2008). — Bernama

Herry needs masseurs under RTG to knead shuttlers to success
PETALING JAYA: Athletes under the elite Road to Gold (RTG) programme are entitled to request anything that can help boost their performance and for men's doubles head coach Herry Iman Pierngadi, that means asking for more masseurs. Herry knows that a relaxed body can reduce stress, anxiety and enhance performance. The former Indonesia coaching legend currently oversees two pairs in the RTG programme, world No. 2 Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik and rising duo Man Wei Chong-Tee Kai Wun. The Indonesian coach admitted that the current number of masseurs is insufficient, especially during tournaments, as players often have to wait their turn and share with other teammates. As such, Herry hopes at least two more masseurs can be added to the support team to ease the workload, particularly during overseas competitions. 'I'd like to thank RTG for their support so far. But going forward, we do need more masseurs. ''We have many players competing at each tournament, and having only one or two masseurs isn't enough,' said Herry. 'If we could get two additional masseurs, that would really help. ''They're human too, they use a lot of energy and get tired after treating so many players.' Herry also expressed hopes for more supplements and vitamins to be provided for Aaron-Wooi Yik and Wei Chong-Kai Wun. 'Right now, they are already taking some supplements, but every athlete has different needs. ''It would be ideal if they could receive additional vitamins tailored to their individual requirements,' he added. In addition to the two men's doubles pairs, the RTG programme also includes women's duo Pearly Tan-M. Thinaah and mixed doubles pair Chen Tang Jie-Toh Ee Wei. More recently, two top professional pairings have also come on board, world No. 1 men's doubles pair Goh Sze Fei-Nur Izzuddin Rumsani and experienced mixed doubles duo Goh Soon Huat-Shevon Lai Jemie. Beyond badminton, the RTG roster features national track cyclists Shah Firdaus Sahrom and Nur Izzah Izzati Asri, weightlifter Mohd Aniq Kasdan, and squash star S. Sivasangari. RTG initiative was launched to provide targeted support for elite athletes with the potential to deliver Malaysia's long-awaited first Olympic gold medal at the 2028 Los Angeles Games.

‘No. 1? Why not,' says coach Herry on Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik's world ranking push
KUALA LUMPUR, June 20 — A strong showing at the Japan and China Opens next month could lift national men's doubles pair Aaron Chia and Soh Wooi Yik to the world No. 1 ranking and boost their seeding prospects at the world championships, said head coach Herry Iman Pierngadi. He said clinching the world's top ranking could help the Olympic bronze medallists secure a better seeding at the world championships in Paris this August. 'Aaron and Wooi Yik are already ranked second in the world, which I think is good enough to help with their seeding at the world championships. 'But if they can become world No. 1 before then, why not? Of course, that would be even better,' he told reporters after a national team training session at Akademi Badminton Malaysia (ABM) here today. Aaron-Wooi Yik are ranked second with 89,870 points, just 1,220 points behind their compatriots and professional pair Goh Sze Fei-Nur Izzuddin Rumsani. However, Herry said the world No. 1 ranking is not the top priority for Aaron-Wooi Yik, as it is more important to be well prepared for all tournaments. Aaron-Wooi Yik are the first and only Malaysians to have won a world badminton title, achieving the feat in 2022 in Tokyo after defeating Indonesia's Mohammad Ahsan and Hendra Setiawan. — Bernama

Herry's different approach as coach bearing fruit for men's doubles
That's the way: Herry Iman Pierngadi (second from left) hugging Man Wei Chong after he and Tee Kai Wun (right) beat Japan's Takuro Hoki-Yugo Kobayashi in the Malaysian Masters semi-finals last month. PETALING JAYA: A coach can change a game, a great coach can change a life. It is a famous saying by American basketball trainer John Wooden and one that is greatly followed by national doubles coach Herry Iman Pierngadi. In fact, the 62-year-old Herry displays Wooden's slogan instead of his photo on his WhatsApp's profile. With such a profound belief in his calling as a coach, no wonder Herry has been able to transform the image of the Malaysian men's doubles department in just six months. From a washout at the All-England in March, the men's doubles under the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) have now contributed five titles in the first half of the year through former world champions Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik and Man Wei Chong-Tee Kai Wun. Aaron lifted the Asian championships, Thailand Open and Singapore Open titles while Wei Chong-Kai Wun bagged the Malaysian Masters and entered the Indonesian Open final under the guidance of Herry since early February. It was such a turnaround especially after men's doubles wilted at the All-England in March when none made it past the first round. Wei Chong-Kai Wun also won the Indonesian Masters this year and reached the semi-finals of the Malaysian Open but that was before the arrival of Herry. 'The role of coach is more than just coaching,' said Herry, who has a four-year contract with BAM. 'It's about making a difference in the life of the players. I want them to be successful on and off the court. 'It's about trusting each other – the players and coach; also having a good communication, and being like a father to these players,' said Herry. Herry's calm manner and years of experience as Indonesia's long-serving doubles coach for almost three decades is rubbing off on the Malaysians, and the challenge now is to keep the momentum going in the second half of the year. 'It's a joy for a coach to see his players doing well. I'm so happy to see Man-Tee reaching the final of the Indonesian Open. Earlier, Aaron-Wooi Yik stayed solid for three weeks in a row,' said Herry. 'I think, the greater sense of accomplishment is seeing the change in the players' mindset ... they are now playing with more confidence,' he added. With a strong showing so far, naturally all eyes will be at the World Championships in Paris in August. Since Aaron-Wooi Yik ended the country's wait by winning the world title for the first time at the 2022 edition in Japan, Malaysia's men's doubles campaign has been rather quiet and it's time to make some noise again. In leading to the worlds, Herry's boys will firstly be out make their marks at the back-to-back Japan Open from July 15-20 and China Open from July 22-27. Last year, professional shuttlers Goh Sze Fei-Nur Izzuddin Rumsani captured both the men's doubles title in Japan and China.
