Watch Hibs concede five goals BEFORE HALF TIME as Dutch giants Ajax run amok in pre-season friendly
Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) EVERYONE wants matches against tough opposition as they sharpen up for pre-season. And that's certainly the case for David Gray's Hibs, who are entitled to feel pretty good about themselves going into the season. Sign up for Scottish Sun newsletter Sign up 3 Hibs boss David Gray wanted a tough match and that was what he got Credit: SNS 3 How Hibs lined up for the clash 3 The evergreen Steven Berghuis (left) fired Ajax off to a great start After a strong third placed finish, the Hibees have a tough Europa League qualifier against FC Mijdjytlland to prepare for. They've secured the signature of the highly-prized Josh Mulligan from Dundee, retained Rocky Bushiri and are hopeful of persuading Nectar Triantis to join on a permanent basis. But just maybe today was the day that a few Hibs fans got a rude awakening - as they went down heavily in a preseason friendly in Holland to Dutch giants Ajax. John Heitinga's side finished second in Holland last year which means they're gearing up for the Champions League themselves. And they certainly didn't spare the Hibees in this clash at the Toekomst sports complex. While the game was played behind closed doors, the Dutch outfit made it available via their app to their supporters - and it must have been a tough watch at times for Hibees supporters. Starting the match with a strong line up which included the likes of Brian Brobbey, Steven Berghuis, Owen Wijndaal and Davy Klaassen, they had scored five goals before the first half was out. The Hibees went with the likes of Bushiri, Dylan Levitt, Jamie McGrath, Chris Cadden and Jack Iredale from the start. Classy campaigner Berghuis opened the scoring within eight minutes with a fine left foot finish then doubled the Dutch lead with a tidy finish with his right. Martin Boyle got one back for the Hibees in 16 minutes but then it was over to Ajax winger and Belgian star Mika Godst who got a quickfire double. With Ajax putting on a full new team for the second period, things got worse before they got better for the visitors courtesy of a goal from Turkish star Ahmetcan Caplan. But Hibs hung in there and at least got a couple of goals back late on to add a bit more respectability to the score. First Junior Hoilett netted, then Kieron Bowie pounded to make it a final score of 6-3. Keep up to date with ALL the latest news and transfers at the Scottish Sun football page

Hibernian to rename East Stand in honour of former player Pat Stanton
Hibernian have announced that they are renaming Easter Road's East Stand as the Pat Stanton Stand in honour of one of their greatest players. Stanton, 80, made almost 400 appearances for his beloved Hibees in the 1960s and 70s, captaining them to League Cup glory in 1972. The official unveiling will take place ahead of the club's 150th anniversary match against Rot-Weiss Essen on Tuesday, July 9. Chairman Ian Gordon told Hibs' website: 'It's with great pride and pleasure that we are honouring Pat Stanton's amazing contribution to Hibernian FC and Scottish football during our anniversary season. 'The Pat Stanton Stand will serve as a lasting tribute to his achievements and legacy, inspiring future players and supporters for many years to come. 'On behalf of everyone associated with Hibs – the fans, the board, the staff, the players, the entire Hibernian family – I would like to thank Pat for everything he's done for the club.' Scottish Premiership hero rushed to hospital after car crash as club reveal he'll miss his own testimonial match
HIBS have announced that club hero Darren McGregor has been involved in a car accident. They've revealed McGregor, 39, has undergone surgery in hospital and will now cruelly miss his OWN testimonial match. 2 2 McGregor joined Hibs in 2015 after spells at Cowdenbeath, St Mirren and Rangers. He spent eight years with the Hibees as a player, making just shy of 200 appearances. McGregor was part of the Hibs side that won the Scottish Cup in 2016 and the Championship title the following year. He has remained with the Easter Road outfit since his playing career ended in 2023 and is now the head coach of the under-18s side. To mark 10 years at the club, Hibs gave McGregor a testimonial match. It'll take place next month, with Bolton Wanderers heading to Easter Road on July 19. But McGregor cruelly won't be able to feature in the match. Hibs have revealed he was involved in a vehicle collision on Friday evening. He has now undergone surgery at Edinburgh Royal Infirmary and is recovering. While he won't be able to play, McGregor will still be in attendance at the match. Hibs say he will meet fans at the stadium and the hospitality suites on the day. He'll be doing this before, after and during the match. Speaking at the time of the testimonial being announced, the committee chairman Graeme Cadger said: 'We would like to thank Hibernian FC for their cooperation, Bolton Wanderers FC for agreeing to provide the opposition, and to David Gray for allowing Darren to play part of the match. 'We believe this will be a great occasion to celebrate the career of a Hibernian FC great, and we hope to see as many supporters there as possible to give Daz a moment to remember.' Hibs, meanwhile, look set to sign Josh Mulligan from Dundee. The 22-year old, who can play at right-back and midfield, had looked close to signing for Rangers previously. The Dee were understood to be desperate to keep him on but it looks like he's heading for Easter Road instead.

Hibs' potential Europa League opponents whittled down
As it is, they will now have to attempt to navigate three knockout rounds to reach the competition proper. The draw takes place in Nyon, Switzerland, this afternoon and will get underway at 12pm UK time. Unseeded for the draw, it has become a bit clearer this morning who the Hibees could face in the second qualifying round as their potential opponents were whittled down. Read more: In the Group 2 section of the draw, the seeded teams are Shakhtar Donetsk/Ilves, Midtjylland, Anderlecht and Sheriff Tiraspol/Prihstina. There is clearly a lot of European pedigree between the majority of those sides. Shakhtar, often a Champions League side, would be favourites to beat their Finnish opponents and Sheriff would have that tag against the Kosovans. Midtjylland and Anderlecht would also provide testing opposition. Hibs faced the Belgian giants in the 1992/93 UEFA Cup first round, losing on away goals after a 3-3 aggregate draw. They have never faced any of their other potential opponents.

13 ex Hibs players poised for free agency as it stands including cup hero
After a difficult start in club icon David Gray's first stint as permanent head coach, the team rallied and embarked on a fantastic run which ended with them third in the league. They are now looking to the transfer market to strengthen their ranks ahead of Europa League qualifiers, which will begin in July before their defence of third spot kicks off. It won't just be Hibs on the prowl for moves though. There are former players of the club who could also be in search of fresh clubs this summer as free agents with terms ticking down. Looking at players who have contracts expiring in June - with some in talks over extensions - here are some of the ex Hibees who could become available as it stands should nothing be agreed with their current sides.
