Nikos Koulis Brings Precision And Illusion To Sotheby's Paris

Diamond earrings from the WISH collection by Nikos Koulis The Greek designer Nikos Koulis's first selling exhibition with Sotheby's Paris hit this week, with a 30-piece capsule collection showcasing his finely engineered luxury jewelry. The show coincided with Haute Couture Week in the city, bringing the designer's high jewelry innovation to a wide audience of collectors. Koulis draws on his Greek heritage in his work, which is handmade in Athens. He marries an avant-garde, non-conformist aesthetic with traditional Greek goldsmithing, and sees the Sotheby's exhibition as a direct link to an informed and sensitive audience: 'the partnership encapsulates the value, DNA and narrative that can only be channeled through direct, personal relationships within an exclusive milieu — where I can share my finds, inspirations and demanding pieces,' he says. 'As a collector myself, I deeply nurture the ethos of discovery and uphold the trust in quality throughout my creative journey.' A high-shine diamond necklace by Nikos Koulis, on show in Paris at Sotheby's. Some of the pieces on show were specially commissioned by Sotheby's for the event, while others are limited editions from his first high jewelry collection, WISH, an experimental exploration of femininity. The collection is rooted in the childhood memory of blowing a dandelion clock and making a wish on the white seeds as they drift away, translated into aluminium, precious metals and custom-cut diamonds. Many are exquisitely engineered with complex mechanisms that bring fluidity and motion to the spine of the jewel, including earrings and necklaces that move with the body. Frank Everett, Sotheby's Vice Chairman for Jewelry, Americas, believes Koulis is uniquely placed in the contemporary jewelry landscape. 'I had the pleasure of meeting Nikos Koulis several years ago and have wanted to work with him ever since. His exceptional designs are innovative, bold, and simply beautiful,' he says, adding 'the exact pieces we were to receive for the exhibition were a surprise — when I opened the package, it was a wow moment.' Amongst the most engaging pieces, are a diamond and ruby necklace, which took over 200 days to make in the Koulis atelier. Some of the pieces commissioned for the event itself, explore high-shine polish, with mirror-finished scoops of white gold echoing a graduation of marquise diamonds, in a bracelet that celebrates illusion. The matching tennis necklace feels silky smooth and comfortable on the skin. Elsewhere, a chunky gold chain choker gives way to a cascade of antique pear-cut diamonds, playing with notions of femininity: 'we used long pears for this diamond collar,' Koulis told me at Sotheby's. 'I like the contrast between masculinity and femininity, between the diamonds and the polished gold chain. The spokes float down from the chain in freedom. Rather than fixing them at the sides, we decided to leave them to follow the movement of the body,' he explained. An emerald and diamond bracelet by Nikos Koulis, on show at Sotheby's Paris. For Everett, that movement is key to the success of Koulis' design language. 'His obsession with high-quality gemstones, emeralds in particular, is evident in every piece, and his exemplary craftsmanship offers flexibility and movement to bring life to the jewels.' Rooted in light and geometry, these are jewels which feel empowering in their precision and protective on the body. The collectors perusing the jewels in Paris this week are sure to be walking taller since their purchases.

Gurhan High Karat Gold Jewels Illuminate Couture Show With A Rare Glow

New York-based designer Gurhan is exhibiting hi latest limited edition and one-off high karat gold ... More jewels at the Couture show in Las Vegas June 4 - June 8. Specializing in hand-wrought, 24-karat, 22-karat gold and sterling silver jewels ranging from a granulated sterling silver cross pendant necklace priced at $245.00 to hand-hammered 24-karat gold beaded men's bracelets to a one-of-a-kind Paraiba tourmaline necklace that retails for approximately $200,000, Turkish-born, New York-based high luxury jewelry designer Gurhan Orhan creates distinctive jewels in an epic array of styles and price ranges. Yet his jewelry's main marks of distinction reside in their embodiment of traditional artisanal techniques and aesthetic tendencies that originated in the Byzantine empire (roughly from 330 AD to 1453 AD), as well as antique elements sourced from around the world. In addition to being a designer, Gurhan cuts the turquoise, boulder opals and other gemstones that ... More he uses in his various collections. While Gurhan's Antiquities collection pieces are set with everything from ancient Roman micro-mosaics and carnelian intaglios to 16th century Japanese Satsuma porcelains buttons of rare beauty, his High Jewelry, Gold Classic, 25th anniversary, Curated and Men's collections are alive with Gurhan's love of gold, precious gemstones and the Old World mastery of his Istanbul artisans, which he has carefully trained over the years. Gurhan, who is exhibiting his many collections at the Couture Show in Las Vegas June 4 - June 8, granted a Zoom interview to this writer to reflect on his career, which began in Turkey and brought him to New York City 26 years ago. Gurhan's radiant New York City flagship boutique is located on Franklin Street in Soho. While Gurhan's boutique at 160 Franklin Street in New York's Soho district has been gleaming and going strong for eleven years, he continues to expand his creative horizons. After training as a lapidary, Gurhan is now cutting turquoise, boulder opal and other gems that are set in his jewels. 'A collection with the #8 mine turquoise that I cut will be presented at Couture,' Gurhan noted, along with a tourmaline collection, a sapphire collection, plus diamonds and gold collections. 'At Couture, we are also exhibiting pieces such as a bracelet that can be added to a necklace for interchangeable looks,' he confided. "Versatility is an important advantage in a jewel as many customers highly value this aspect of a design." More gold make this Gurhan Antiquities bracelet a treasure, When it comes to describing the formative influences on his aesthetic, 'Byzantium is my starting point,' Gurhan explained, 'as the Byzantine empire had such a strong love of gold, which I completely identify with. In Byzantine art and culture," he related, 'gold symbolized divine light, transcendence, and spiritual purity. Its presence in religious objects, artwork and jewelry, made gold a symbol of strength, profound beauty, purity, faith, wealth and power. During the Byzantine era, the Roman Empire expanded East, and centered on Constantinople, which is now called Istanbul,' he continued. 'The Roman influence on Constantinople explains why much Byzantine jewelry resembles jewels of Roman antiquity, and while the Byzantine Empire's artistic and cultural influence spread far and wide, its use of gold in jewelry, in royal objects and in fine art made a huge impact on other world cultures.' Like a secret garden, Gurhan's opal and diamond ring set in high karat gold is alive with constantly ... More changing colors and light. Gurhan's jewelry differs from many other contemporary jewelers in that it is made with hand-wrought, labor-intensive techniques like granulation, filigree, and inlay, showcasing his admiration for Byzantine traditions of metalworking and adornment. In Gurhan's estimation, gold is more than a precious, beautiful and rare jewelry material. For him, it is a cosmically powerful substance with proven scientific properties. 'It's amazing that gold came to this planet as a result of meteorite bombardments," Gurhan mused. "It flew through outer space and landed like a gift deep inside the earth. Gold is a kind of transmitter that moves energy into your body, and it's also the best conductor of electricity with maximum efficiency," he claimed. Jewelry designer Gurhan Orhan wears high karat gold rings and an earring of his own design. In addition, 'Pure gold is hyper-precious and because it is almost 40 percent heavier than 18-karat gold, it feels fantastic on the body,' he said with a smile. Along with his respect for the energetic properties of gold, Gurhan also reveres whatever it is that animates gemstones. 'Energies live inside gemstones, definitely,' he said. 'In the case of pearls, these materials were made by a living thing, an oyster. Think about that,' he said with a laugh, while holding up to the camera a 40.25 inch strand of baroque freshwater pearls that featured a 22K gold lobster clasp. One of the standouts of Gurhan's Oyster collection, the necklace is one of his many utterly unique organic statement pieces. Gurhan's gift for high luxury jewelry design is fortified by his love of gold plus the colors, ... More textures and energies inherent in gemstones and organic gems, such as pearls, In order to compensate for gold's recent record high prices, Gurhan noted that, 'We have been making lots of new gold chains in different sizes that show a lot of gold yet are lighter in weight.' On the subject of gold's current price, Gurhan commented that, 'Considering that there is such a finite amount of gold, I believe that is priced rather low.' What if gold continues to rise even higher in price? 'The higher in value the raw material of your products, the better it is for your business,' he theorized. What's more, given that hundreds of Gurhan's online New York boutique clients are already avid members of his loyalty program, 'I remain optimistic, for my customers and my various retail partner who I will see at Couture all love gold as much as I do.' Gurhan utilizes the power of cabochon-cut colored gemstones offset by twinkling diamonds to create ... More visually impactful jewels.

Cartier Releases Latest High Jewelry Collection 'En Equilibre'

The new Traforato necklace form the En Equilibre collection. The official High Jewelry showings in January and July in Paris align with the Haute Couture. Both attract a similar customer: a discerning client with superior tastes and deep pockets. The Cannes Film Festival is also where these categories flourish in visibility, especially the high jewelry, which has used the high-profile event to promote their exquisite and expensive creations on the Red Carpet. Cartier is no exception, with this season boasting styles on Elle Fanning, Catherine Deneuve, and Gong Li. However, to introduce its 115-piece 'En Equilibre' collection, the Place Vendôme jewelry house explored a new region, Stockholm, Sweden, where they unveiled the collection. To celebrate, the brand hosted a formal gala evening at Artipelag art gallery on the waters of the archipelago. The celebration festivities began in Stockholm proper with an exhibition of the collection in the historic Nacka Strandmässen industrial building featuring an open sky vista where guests witness Maison's expert artisans demonstrate the savoir-faire behind the Panthère Dentelée necklace. Highlights of the new collections include The Tsagaan necklace, which features a subtly discernible image of a snow leopard—whose coat makes it hard to spot in the wild— which is mimicked in the diamond and black onyx necklace with an angular design that comes to a point in the center where the face of the elusive big cat appears. Three octagonal emeralds inspired the Traforato necklace, which also has a sharp design motif with a setting that resembles a zig-zag and a cascade of round diamonds hanging from diamond and emerald baguettes. Two shield-cut diamonds inspire the Skudo ring with a graphic and balanced appearance, reaching a point at the ring top. Guests such as friends of the Maison Zoe Saldaña and Swede Alexander Skarsgard, brand ambassadors Deepika Padukone and Anna Sawai, and other VIP attendees were ferried by boat to the art museum that combines architecture and nature. According to a collection release, En Equilibre echoes the design space with a visual harmony that balances colors, length, and volume and 'the space between full and empty and symmetry and asymmetry.' Stockholm also expressed the equilibrium, where creativity and design evoke the balance between urban life and nature and innovation and tradition. Its balance recalls a 'sense of minimalism or lagom: neither too much nor too little.' The High Jewelry pieces were showcased in a 'tableaux vivant'—models dressed in Giambattista Valli's Prêt-à- designs lead the way to the gala dinner. The evening continued with a performance devised by the Canadian rock band The Beaches and a DJ set by Dorion Fiszel.

Gracie Abrams Chose an Ornate Gown for Paul Mescal's Cannes Premiere

While Gracie Abrams and Paul Mescal may have hit the red carpet separately at the Cannes Film Festival this evening, one can assume that Abrams was there to support Mescal's latest project, The History of Sound. The pair, who have been dating for just under a year, are often spotted together in public, though they have yet to make things red carpet official. While the actor chose a sleek black suit for his appearance, Abrams delivered her own striking fashion moment: She wore a custom black satin-crêpe dress by Chanel that was layered with draped chiffon, and embellished with black crystals and jeweled buttons in the back. The design took 456 hours to complete, and features over 19,000 different embroidery elements. The look coincidentally (or maybe not so coincidentally) coordinated with Mescal's suit. Photo: Courtesy of Chanel 'It's the perfect, beautifully-elevated black dress. I'm obsessed with it,' Abrams tells Vogue of her glamorous dress, which she punctuated with a cascading shawl. 'The shawl has this drama about it, but it's also so effortless to wear; so light and ethereal. You remove the shawl and feel like you can go dancing into the next day.' (Dancing-ready for the premiere after-parties, perhaps.) Photo: Courtesy of Chanel Photo: Courtesy of Chanel Abrams accessorized the ornate dress with Chanel High Jewelry pieces—including the 'Particuliere' ring in 18-karat white gold, brown diamonds, and white diamonds, as well as a pair of "Champ de Blé" earrings in 18-karat white gold and diamonds. The star needed a little (or a lot) of bling—it is Cannes, after all. 'Looking down at the rings,' Abrams says, 'I am reminded that we are in Cannes, honoring the glamour of this historic festival and celebrating the magic of these brilliant films. I feel very, very lucky.' As for when Mescal and Abrams may finally make their relationship official on the step and repeat? There is still a few days of Cannes left—watch this space! Below, more exclusive photos from Abrams as she got ready for Cannes.
