Gurhan High Karat Gold Jewels Illuminate Couture Show With A Rare Glow
Specializing in hand-wrought, 24-karat, 22-karat gold and sterling silver jewels ranging from a granulated sterling silver cross pendant necklace priced at $245.00 to hand-hammered 24-karat gold beaded men's bracelets to a one-of-a-kind Paraiba tourmaline necklace that retails for approximately $200,000, Turkish-born, New York-based high luxury jewelry designer Gurhan Orhan creates distinctive jewels in an epic array of styles and price ranges. Yet his jewelry's main marks of distinction reside in their embodiment of traditional artisanal techniques and aesthetic tendencies that originated in the Byzantine empire (roughly from 330 AD to 1453 AD), as well as antique elements sourced from around the world.
In addition to being a designer, Gurhan cuts the turquoise, boulder opals and other gemstones that ... More he uses in his various collections.
While Gurhan's Antiquities collection pieces are set with everything from ancient Roman micro-mosaics and carnelian intaglios to 16th century Japanese Satsuma porcelains buttons of rare beauty, his High Jewelry, Gold Classic, 25th anniversary, Curated and Men's collections are alive with Gurhan's love of gold, precious gemstones and the Old World mastery of his Istanbul artisans, which he has carefully trained over the years. Gurhan, who is exhibiting his many collections at the Couture Show in Las Vegas June 4 - June 8, granted a Zoom interview to this writer to reflect on his career, which began in Turkey and brought him to New York City 26 years ago.
Gurhan's radiant New York City flagship boutique is located on Franklin Street in Soho.
While Gurhan's boutique at 160 Franklin Street in New York's Soho district has been gleaming and going strong for eleven years, he continues to expand his creative horizons. After training as a lapidary, Gurhan is now cutting turquoise, boulder opal and other gems that are set in his jewels. 'A collection with the #8 mine turquoise that I cut will be presented at Couture,' Gurhan noted, along with a tourmaline collection, a sapphire collection, plus diamonds and gold collections. 'At Couture, we are also exhibiting pieces such as a bracelet that can be added to a necklace for interchangeable looks,' he confided. "Versatility is an important advantage in a jewel as many customers highly value this aspect of a design."

Ancient scarabs, Roman micro-mosaics, intaglios and bronze elements from antiquity set in high karat ... More gold make this Gurhan Antiquities bracelet a treasure,
When it comes to describing the formative influences on his aesthetic, 'Byzantium is my starting point,' Gurhan explained, 'as the Byzantine empire had such a strong love of gold, which I completely identify with. In Byzantine art and culture," he related, 'gold symbolized divine light, transcendence, and spiritual purity. Its presence in religious objects, artwork and jewelry, made gold a symbol of strength, profound beauty, purity, faith, wealth and power. During the Byzantine era, the Roman Empire expanded East, and centered on Constantinople, which is now called Istanbul,' he continued. 'The Roman influence on Constantinople explains why much Byzantine jewelry resembles jewels of Roman antiquity, and while the Byzantine Empire's artistic and cultural influence spread far and wide, its use of gold in jewelry, in royal objects and in fine art made a huge impact on other world cultures.'
Like a secret garden, Gurhan's opal and diamond ring set in high karat gold is alive with constantly ... More changing colors and light.
Gurhan's jewelry differs from many other contemporary jewelers in that it is made with hand-wrought, labor-intensive techniques like granulation, filigree, and inlay, showcasing his admiration for Byzantine traditions of metalworking and adornment. In Gurhan's estimation, gold is more than a precious, beautiful and rare jewelry material. For him, it is a cosmically powerful substance with proven scientific properties. 'It's amazing that gold came to this planet as a result of meteorite bombardments," Gurhan mused. "It flew through outer space and landed like a gift deep inside the earth. Gold is a kind of transmitter that moves energy into your body, and it's also the best conductor of electricity with maximum efficiency," he claimed.
Jewelry designer Gurhan Orhan wears high karat gold rings and an earring of his own design.
In addition, 'Pure gold is hyper-precious and because it is almost 40 percent heavier than 18-karat gold, it feels fantastic on the body,' he said with a smile. Along with his respect for the energetic properties of gold, Gurhan also reveres whatever it is that animates gemstones. 'Energies live inside gemstones, definitely,' he said. 'In the case of pearls, these materials were made by a living thing, an oyster. Think about that,' he said with a laugh, while holding up to the camera a 40.25 inch strand of baroque freshwater pearls that featured a 22K gold lobster clasp. One of the standouts of Gurhan's Oyster collection, the necklace is one of his many utterly unique organic statement pieces.
Gurhan's gift for high luxury jewelry design is fortified by his love of gold plus the colors, ... More textures and energies inherent in gemstones and organic gems, such as pearls,
In order to compensate for gold's recent record high prices, Gurhan noted that, 'We have been making lots of new gold chains in different sizes that show a lot of gold yet are lighter in weight.' On the subject of gold's current price, Gurhan commented that, 'Considering that there is such a finite amount of gold, I believe that is priced rather low.' What if gold continues to rise even higher in price? 'The higher in value the raw material of your products, the better it is for your business,' he theorized. What's more, given that hundreds of Gurhan's online New York boutique clients are already avid members of his loyalty program, 'I remain optimistic, for my customers and my various retail partner who I will see at Couture all love gold as much as I do.'
Gurhan utilizes the power of cabochon-cut colored gemstones offset by twinkling diamonds to create ... More visually impactful jewels.

'Stranger Things: First Shadow' stars focus on humanity amid horror
NEW YORK, July 27 (UPI) -- Burke Swanson and Alison Jaye say they focused on the humanity even more than the horror when playing teen versions of Hopper and Joyce in Broadway's blockbuster Stranger Things prequel, The First Shadow. Penned by Kate Trefry and directed by Stephen Daldry, the supernatural stage play takes place in the 1950s, in the fictional town of Hawkins, Ind., and offers origins stories for the beloved grown-ups -- and terrifying uber-villain Vecna/Henry Creel -- from the 1980s-set Netflix TV show. "Within the spooky, sci-fi nature of it all, there are real humans trying to figure themselves out and figure out what their community's like," Swanson told UPI in a recent Zoom interview. Even before Henry (Louis McCartney) arrives and unwittingly turns the town upside-down, Hopper and his classmates Bob Newby (Patrick Scott McDermott) and his adopted sister Patty (Gabrielle Nevaeh) are dealing with parent-related tension and trauma. "What was so special to me is that it wasn't shying away from those stories," Swanson said. "It's a big thing that we're doing here. There's a lot to tell and it almost doesn't fit within one show, but there's a willingness to explore not only the father-kid relationships, but the mother-kid relationships and how each different dynamic is processed." Patty's outsider status leads her into danger because the only person she feels connected to is Henry. "Patty has really been pushed to the side, not only within the community, but also within her family," Swanson said. "Bob did not support Patty in a way that she needed and she comes into her own as this really incredible, strong female lead," he added. "He gets this really powerful moment just to acknowledge, 'I messed up and i want to do better.' And I think those moments -- even within the sort of 'Mind Flayer' of it all -- are the things that really push us forward through that story." As for Hopper, he is leaning into his "bad-boy mentality" when the audience first meets him, but he matures a bit throughout the play as he tries to help his friends and neighbors, Swanson noted. "In classic Hopper fashion, he's got a really sentimental heart," Swanson added. "What continues to be learned in this show is the power of community and the power of friendship and Hopper believes that he will be better off alone. His relationship with his father is not good. There's no communication there and I think what we see is the glimpse of the hope of who Hopper can become when he chooses community." Just as the Netflix series is famous for tapping into the nostalgia of the 1980s, the stage production perfectly re-imagines Middle America in the 1950s. "It's been a blast getting to dive into the music, into the aesthetics and costumes. We really got to emphasize the color, the dynamic of that time period, visually," Swanson said. "What's really, really fascinating about the '50s -- and this has been touched on by many different art forms -- is what happens when that facade begins to crack because the sleepy little town of Hawkins, Indiana seems to have begun to experience some very spooky things much earlier than we thought." Hopper may be decades away from becoming the sheriff who will date single mom Joyce, but the two do know each other quite well at this point, even if they don't travel in the same social circles until they team up to solve the mystery surrounding Henry. While Hopper is a loner, teen Joyce is a bubbly theater kid obsessed with directing the school play. "With this version of Joyce, there is a real questioning and push and pull of, 'Is this the life I'm going to choose? Or am I going to be able to get out of here and escape and become something bigger than this town?'" Jaye said. The actress loves that -- even though the play has spectacular special effects -- the characters live in a low-tech era guided by their instincts and moral compasses as opposed to cell phones or computers. "These kids don't have that. All they're leaning on is each other. If we're talking about the trio of Bob, Joyce and Jim [Hopper], we wake up every day and just knock on each other's doors and continue investigating, just like we kind of see [kid characters do] on the TV show," Jaye said. "There's that buoyancy and that fervor, that rigor to: 'We've got to dig. We've got to solve this problem.' They put all that energy on each other, instead of on technology, and connect that way, which is, I feel like, a big difference between what we're living in now." Although many fans of the Netflix series have been rooting for grownup Hopper (David Harbour) and Joyce (Winona Ryder) to hook up for years, others cheered when Joyce finally seemed to have a brief but stable romance with nice-guy Bob (Sean Astin) before he was attacked by Demodogs while protecting Joyce and her sons. Teen Bob is shy, earnest and clearly in love with Joyce. "When I watch the series, that was immediately one of my favorite characters who, unfortunately, didn't last that long. But he provides such a grounded sense of being," Jaye said about Bob. "They are so different, but, yet, it is the softness of Bob that softens Joyce. I feel like we do get to see that and celebrate that in the early moments of the show together." Jaye said she has been overwhelmed by support from fans who get a kick out of learning more about their favorite TV character by watching the play. "People of all ages have been like: 'Oh, my gosh! Of course, Joyce is a theater kid! How did I not put that together?' There's no nod to that in the series at all, but Kate created this back story for her," Jaye explained. "There's a nerdy tenderness and, also, a major headstrong authority to her that somehow makes it all make sense to me perfectly."

CC Sabathia Exudes Humility In Eloquent Hall Of Fame Induction Speech
Baseball Hall of Fame inductee CC Sabathia arrives on stage during the National Baseball Hall of ... More Fame induction ceremony in Cooperstown, N.Y., Sunday, July 27, 2025. (AP Photo/Seth Wenig) Copyright 2025 The Associated Press. All rights reserved. CC Sabathia's induction into the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum goes well beyond an elite left-handed starting pitcher being elected in his first year of eligibility. One of 15 pitchers who have won at least 250 ball games and struck out 3,000 batters, Sabathia is the personification of perseverance both on and off the field. Instead of a 15-minute induction speech that felt like a wandering trip down memory lane with occasional moments of levity, Sabathia was direct and spoke from the heart about the village of women who helped him navigate the struggles of life. Sabathia made it clear that he would be personally thanking a long list of people, but his induction speech was a tribute to a special group of women. Sabathia paid homage to his mother, wife, aunts and grandmother. Amid family tragedies and the absence of his father for a period, Sabathia's mother stressed the importance of character and always looking to move beyond the storm. She also didn't mind wearing catcher's equipment to work with her son as an adolescent or talk about pitch selection after a ball game when Sabathia was making a name for himself at the major league level. The joy in Sabathia's eyes was overwhelming while talking about his wife, Amber, and their four children. A renewed outlook on life is allowing Sabathia to enjoy his children's theater, dance and baseball endeavors. A first-round selection (20th pick) by the Cleveland Indians in Major League Baseball's 1998 draft, Sabathia received a $1.3 million signing bonus out of high school in Vallejo, California. According to Baseball-Reference's calculation of the wins above replacement (WAR) statistic, Sabathia's 62.3 WAR is the highest in his draft class. A raw talent by all accounts, Sabathia's first minor league bullpen session in front of pitching coach Carl Willis could have been viewed as a disaster since he didn't know how to demonstrate the grips on a two-seam fastball or four-seam fastball. Willis' patience and attention to detail instilled confidence in Sabathia as he acquired a comprehensive education in pitching mechanics. Sabathia is a proud member of the Black Aces, an exclusive fraternity of 15 Black pitchers who have won at least 20 ball games in a single season. A 21-game winner with the New York Yankees in 2010, Sabathia is one of three Black Aces who are enshrined in the hallowed halls of Cooperstown alongside right-handed pitchers Bob Gibson and Ferguson Jenkins. As a 17-year-old minor league pitching prospect, Sabathia was introduced to Jim 'Mudcat' Grant, a former right-handed pitcher and veteran of 14 major league seasons. Grant impressed upon Sabathia the importance of being a Black starting pitcher and getting connected with Buck O'Neil and the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum. A driving force in creating the Black Aces, Grant won 21 ball games in 1965 while pitching for the Minnesota Twins. Baseball Hall of Fame inductees Billy Wagner, left, Ichiro Suzuki, second from left, and CC ... More Sabathia, center, pose with Willa Allen, wife of Baseball Hall of Fame inductee Dick Allen, second from right, and Dave Parker II, son of Baseball Hall of Fame inductee Dave Parker, at the National Baseball Hall of Fame induction ceremony in Cooperstown, N.Y., Sunday, July 27, 2025. (AP Photo/Seth Wenig) Copyright 2025 The Associated Press. All rights reserved. In honor of Sabathia and fellow Hall of Fame classmate Ichiro Suzuki, the Yankees curated a stadium museum exhibit celebrating their achievements while wearing the venerable pinstripes. As Sabathia selected the Yankees as the cap designation on his bronze plaque, the franchise chose three phrases that eloquently summarized his career in the Bronx. Sabathia was a clubhouse leader who served as a mentor and inspiration to teammates. A consistent winner, he was the epitome of the workhorse starting pitcher who put the ball club's needs ahead of personal achievements. An advocate for empowering others, Sabathia's PitCCh In Foundation enriches lives in underserved communities through athletic and educational endeavors such as clinics, renovating baseball fields, and distributing backpacks with school supplies for children. Clayton Kershaw Pays Tribute To CC Sabathia Left-handed pitcher Clayton Kershaw of the Los Angeles Dodgers recently joined the prestigious 3,000 strikeout club. A reporter asked Kershaw which member of the club resonated the most with him. While he paid respect to contemporaries such as right-handed pitchers Max Scherzer and Justin Verlander, Kershaw was effusive in his praise of Sabathia. He specifically referenced what Sabathia did in September 2008 when he made three consecutive starts each on three days' rest to catapult the Milwaukee Brewers into the postseason for the first time since Game Seven of the 1982 World Series against the St. Louis Cardinals. Kershaw was in awe of Sabathia's selflessness and blatant disregard for his well-being even as free agency awaited him at season's end. Besides his infectious smile and gregarious personality, you can't help but feel attracted to Sabathia given his brutal honesty regarding alcoholism, mental and physical health. Through personal experiences and the bravery to ask for help, Sabathia has learned how to manage the duality of beauty and tragedy in life one day at a time. An addiction to alcohol exacerbated decades of pain caused by anxiety, grief and insecurity. The pressures were compounded by Sabathia viewing his left arm as a golden ticket out of poverty and an opportunity to build a life of privilege for loved ones. It was as if his left arm was maintained in pristine condition while the rest of Sabathia's body and soul suffered from years of neglect and addiction. CC Sabathia Reinvented Himself As A Starting Pitcher As choices have consequences, Sabathia was physically breaking down just as he was developing a healthy mindset for baseball and life. No one will ever forget his final appearance in Game Four of the 2019 American League Championship Series at Yankee Stadium where he sustained a left shoulder subluxation as the FS1 cameras caught a distraught Sabathia sitting on the dugout steps leading into the clubhouse. Besides ravaging his right knee to the point where he needs a replacement, Sabathia underwent angioplasty in December 2018 to remove a 90% blockage in an artery leading to his heart. BRONX, NY - OCTOBER 17: CC Sabathia #52 of the New York Yankees walks off the field with Head ... (Photo by Alex Trautwig/MLB Photos via Getty Images) MLB Photos via Getty Images Age and injuries forced Sabathia to confront limitations, but he made the necessary adjustments while earning universal respect from teammates and opponents. Instead of relying on four-seam fastballs pushing triple digits in velocity, Sabathia evolved into a cerebral pitcher who treated baseball more like a game of chess. He took pride in the art of inducing soft contact and moving pitches around the strike zone. While the days of complete games and throwing more than 100 pitches in a start were a distant memory, Sabathia took tremendous pride in five-inning performances where he kept hitters off balance with a new repertoire that featured a cutter, slider and two-seam fastball. CC Sabathia competed with integrity and intensity while maintaining a deep loyalty to his teammates. In retirement, he is an invaluable asset to Major League Baseball as a special assistant to commissioner Rob Manfred. Besides sharing his vast insights and serving as a liaison between the league and current ball players, Sabathia wants to ensure that he won't be the final member of the Black Aces. A healthy future for Major League Baseball begins with accessibility, affordability, diversity and Sabathia's regular involvement when it comes to growing the game.
