Casualty star Neet Mohan reveals why he has changed the way he plays Rash
Last year, Neet Mohan took centre stage in a Casualty boxset titled Breaking Point. It saw his character, Rash Masum, spiral in the aftermath of his dad's sudden death. He threw himself into work to try and distract himself from the grief and loneliness he was feeling but as the weeks ticked on, the dark cloud following him got bigger. Amid this, gossip was circulating in Holby ED as to who could be the hospital whistle-blower. After Rash spotted dodgy Clinical Lead Patrick (Jamie Glover) tampering with a clamp in Resus, he called his boss out while in the lift. Little did he know that brief moment would impact his reputation at Holby City Hospital entirely, as Patrick then attempted to destroy Rash, oblivious as to what was going on in his mind. The beloved doctor became completely withdrawn over the duration of the boxset. Taking himself home, Rash reached a crisis point as he attempted to end his life. He was found and ultimately saved by Tariq (Manpreet Bachu), his cousin. Just over a year on from this, and a lot has changed. While the Rash we see on our screens now is certainly a lot brighter and happier, the ordeal he went through and the recovery that followed after has, of course, impacted him greatly. This is why it's incredibly important to actor Neet Mohan to consider what happened to Rash when approaching new storylines. In our latest chat, the star told me he has changed the way he plays the character, given what happened to him. 'I think you carry all of what that character has done, but you don't want to load the scenes with things that aren't written.' 'Obviously you've got to just serve the scene for what it is, but especially when other characters have come in and how that might resonate with what he's been through, and what each of them have been through. 'Sarah [Seggari] and I did some stuff recently as well, where we were kind of supporting each other a bit during the scenes. The story resonated with some of what she's just done in the previous boxset, and then there was a throwback to what Rash has been feeling as well.' In terms of where Rash's head is at in this latest mini series, Neet said: 'I think he's slowly been recovering in the background. He's just sort of diligently doing his work. He added: 'Tariq has left, so he's had to adapt to that. They were anchors for each other even though they'd ruffle each other's feathers. So I think now he's gone, Rash is finding his feet again. He's developed this slight friendship with Flynn, and Dylan has always been there as a mentor for him. 'We're meeting him at a point where he's got things a bit more under control. He feels more comfortable and he's also been noticed by Sunny, that's really nice for him. He's not really thought about a relationship or anything like that for a while, I think he's finding comfort after having that period.' Sunny (Jamie Marie Leary) connected with Rash during a trip to the ED pharmacy. There was an immediate spark between the two staff members, and Rash's interest in her grew when she thoughtfully noted that his anti-depressant medication had changed. Watching Rash speak to Sunny has been awkward in some places but wonderfully contrasted with the main storyline in this boxset, which has seen the paramedic team fall apart over someone tampering with drugs in the hospital. 'I thought it was great', Neet said of Rash and Sunny's journey in Supply and Demand. 'I think Rash is, at the moment, at a middle stage in his career. Some of his peers around him have become consultants, others have gone on and had families, but I think Rash is in a kind of middle ground. 'He's not much older than Jodie and Cam and Teddy, but he's not like Dylan either. I thought it was an interesting way to play a romance with someone who's just really open to it. Sunny has a child and Rash is totally fine with that, he just wants to get to know her. 'I think Jamie is a brilliant actress to play Sunny. She's just been great fun. She was great fun to work with.' Neet has played Rash since 2017. With Flynn Byron (Olly Rix) busy helping Rash with his training, Neet hopes that one day his soap alter-ego will work his way even further up the ranks, and run Resus just like Stevie Nash (Elinor Lawless) and Dylan Keogh (William Beck). More Trending 'I'd love to see him be a consultant', he smiled. Want to be the first to hear shocking EastEnders spoilers? Who's leaving Coronation Street? The latest gossip from Emmerdale? 'I'd love to see him be an equal medically with the likes of Stevie and Dylan and Flynn, because they are consultants. 'Obviously a consultant of 15 years is going to be far more experienced than a consultant who's just come up, but at least there's not a rank to pull that you know, you're on a different level medically, you're both now consultants. 'I'd love to see him step up to a consultant in the ED environment and fight his own amongst some of those other personalities. He's not someone who's taking orders from them, he's someone who can absolutely run Resus and step up when he needs to.' All BBC Casualty spoilers for next week as contamination ordeal is confirmed
Medical drama Casualty was off air last week due to sport, but our weekly trips to Holby ED will resume this Saturday, as episode 4 of the show's latest boxset Supply and Demand is broadcasted. Characters in the spotlight this time are Iain Dean (Michael Stevenson), Rash Masum (Neet Mohan), Jacob Masters (Charles Venn) and Ngozi Okoye (Adesuwa Oni). Iain's venture into the world of Hart continues, Ngozi battles her addiction, Rash takes a brave step and Jacob makes a discovery when his son arrives in the ED. The drama isn't stopping, so here's everything you need to know about what's ahead in the episode. Iain and Teddy's (Milo Clarke) first day on Hart requires moving a patient called Rhys from a grounded airplane into an EpiShuttle. There's been an outbreak of contagious Marburg, so Rhys needs moving from the plane and into an ambulance. It's a race against time though, as the team hit traffic and Rhys starts to panic. He claims that he has discomfort in his stomach and in his worried state, he tells Iain and Teddy that he doesn't want to die alone. Iain, still trying to ignore the phone call he received in the last episode, cannot help but be reminded of his mum in this moment. Rhys then suffers a seizure and goes into VT. Teddy and Iain know they are at risk of exposure if they treat him, but they don't have any choice. During this moment, Teddy grows convinced that Rhys does not have Marburg. As the cover of the EpiShuttle is lifted, it becomes apparent that Rhys is choking on a balloon of drugs. Tim, Iain and Teddy's boss, then radio's in and confirms Rhys definitely has Marburg. Feeling worried, Teddy reveals to Tim that PPE protocol has also been breached. Meanwhile, at the ED, Rhys' wife Pippa is cornered by the police and she reveals her partner was forced into smuggling drugs. Later, with Teddy decontaminated and Iain next, Dylan Keogh (William Beck) and the team are getting the other balloons of drugs out of Rhys. Suddenly, one splits, and Iain – who has been exposed – jumps in to start compressions. Faith Cadogan (Kirsty Mitchell) then takes blood from Iain in full PPE. She tells him that she's glad he's quite reckless, otherwise he wouldn't have taken a risk with her. Aw, romance. The stress of his day triggers an episode of AVNRT for Teddy. It's a complication of his heart condition and it causes his chest to feel tight. In the back of the ambulance, Teddy is faced with Tim. Teddy isn't keen on facing the fallout of the breach, given how he's feeling, but it makes Tim wonder if he's really got what it takes to be on Hart. In haste, and wanting to get rid of Tim, Teddy quits Hart. Just as Tim leaves, Teddy clutches his chest again but this time, things are much worse. Jacob's son Blake rushes into the ED with little Carter in tow, but focus appears to be more on Blake, who is very agitated. Rash queries whether he's had any changes in medication recently, leaving Jacob to admit that some drugs were recently purchased online. Jacob and Rash head to see Sunny (Jamie Marie Leary) in the pharmacy for answers, but she reveals that Blake's drugs won't be in stock for another 6 months. She says that unless Jacob pays for a private prescription, Blake won't get what he needs. Jacob's left deep in thought – what will he do next? As Dylan continues to support Ngozi in her addiction battle, he offers to be her sponsor. Abel and mum Dee then arrive. Abel has a tension pneumothorax but instead of supporting him, Dee insists that he needs to be more resilient. More Trending As Abel wakes up, Ngozi learns that he was given conversion therapy in an attempt to please Dee. The difficult dynamic between mother and son leaves Ngozi feeling triggered so she moves away, unable to control her emotions. Desperate for a drink, Ngozi later faces Dee again, which leaves her very close to giving into temptation. After the shift, Ngozi heads to another meeting and she finally opens up. Eventually, with the encouragement of the room and Dylan as well, Ngozi feels ready to commit to sobriety. All BBC Casualty spoilers for this week as Iain receives life-changing news
Iain Dean (Michael Stevenson) receives a life-changing phone call in tomorrow's (June 28) episode of Casualty, and it will seriously impact his training at Hart. The beloved character accepted a secondment offer recently, and works alongside Teddy Gowan (Milo Clarke) in a series of training exercises tomorrow. However, when Iain gets that call, his attempt at blocking it out in his mind leads to a disastrous situation in the latest test. At Holby ED, Ngozi Okoye's (Adesuwa Oni) alcohol addiction seriously impacts her shift, leading to her making a huge decision about her future. Also, Rida Amaan (Sarah Seggari) enters the hospital wearing a new uniform, and Flynn Byron (Olly Rix) must attempt to come up with an idea to try and handle the drug-induced patients continuing to enter the ED. Here's everything you need to know about the latest episode of Casualty. Ngozi wakes up in a man's house following a one night stand. On her way home, she calls son Obi, but he quickly works out that she's lying to him. Ngozi is then forced to help a young father and daughter Olivia, who has stopped breathing after accidentally ingesting opioids. Despite being hailed as a hero once Olivia pulls though, Ngozi feels shameful due to how her evening went. Later, Ngozi is asked to look after Joel Sykes, who is suffering from several lacerations after being attacked with a knife. The team have found heroin in Joel's bag and moments later, he notices that Ngozi is hungover. Joel remarks that Ngozi looks how he feels, so she snaps back and says that he should feel shame for his involvement in the drug gang. Unbeknownst to her, Dylan Keogh (William Beck) has been watching Ngozi and pulls her aside to be breathalysed. She passes the test, but Dylan is aware that if she took it an hour earlier, things would be very different. A stressed Ngozi is then told that Obi hasn't been in school. After clashing with Nicole Piper (Sammy T Dobson), Ngozi finds a cocktail and drinks it in the staffroom. Spiralling even further after making a discovery about Joel, a devastated Ngozi ends up accepting Dylan's help. After informing Siobhan Mackenzie (Melanie Hill) about her alcoholism, Ngozi decides to attend an AA meeting. At the Hart training centre, Iain praises Teddy to team leader Tim, who isn't sure whether the young paramedic is capable of what Hart has to offer. Iain and Teddy take part in a training exercise but afterwards, Iain's situation changes when he receives a worrying phone call about him being someone's next of kin. As a result of this call, Iain is terribly distracted in his next test and ends up failing. Iain is determined to ignore the call which was about Kim, his mum. We learn that she's been admitted to a hospice due to an alcoholism-related illness. He ponders over whether or not to visit her, and also asks Faith Cadogan (Kirsty Mitchell) if she'd support him if he went to Hart for something more than a secondment. Faith tells her husband that she'd want Iain to turn down the placement, but would support him regardless. Rida begins her first day as a Band 6 nurse and the entire nursing team are thrilled for her. As the shift continues, Rida becomes increasingly overwhelmed. She has to deal with requests from Siobhan and Flynn, but also faces resistance from Ngozi and Jodie (Anna Chell). Stepping in, Siobhan reminds Rida that she can put her foot down with the nursing team. Rida helps Jodie, who is treating a pregnant heroin addict, but with so many other things on her list, she realises something's got to give. Eventually, after continued backchat from Jodie, Rida marks her authority and sends Jodie into resus. A team meeting his held to discuss the morality rates in light of the growing presence of Class A drugs on Holby's streets. Flynn suggests stockpiling naloxone, while Dylan believes that the ED could hand out pre-loaded syringes to prevent more and more people coming into the hospital. More Trending Later, Flynn learns that Dylan has gone against him and handed naloxone to a patient. They argue, and Flynn gives his derogatory opinions on addicts. Dylan tells Flynn that he's an alcoholic, and Flynn worries that he's lost his colleague's respect after his outburst. View More » BBC One's Casualty airs on Saturday, June 28, at 8:20pm. Casualty star surprised by 'special' reaction to Rida's sexual assault story
Rida Amaan (Sarah Seggari) was sexually assaulted by her work colleague in last week's episode of Casualty. The Holby ED nurse ventured upstairs a few weeks ago to work with a highly successful surgeon called Russell Whitelaw (Robert Bathurst). It took her a bit of time to adapt to her new role but eventually, she found her feet and started to learn a great deal from the experience and her new senior. During a scene that saw the team continue operating on Stevie Nash (Elinor Lawless), Russell came up behind Rida and assaulted her. In the initial aftermath, Rida struggled to do her job in theatre, so much so Russell ended up asking her to leave. Outside, Rida panicked and broke down. When I was sixteen, I was sexually assaulted by my work colleague, just like Rida. Watching this nurse immediately know her ordeal needed reporting was hard because when it happened to me, I was so young, and nobody told me being groped wasn't acceptable. The powerful scenes made me feel emotional. While it's amazing Casualty are shining a light on this, I couldn't help but feel if 16-year-old Calli watched Rida's storyline, the aftermath of her situation would've played out very differently. The reaction to the scenes that aired last week and was something Sarah Seggari and I spoke a lot about in our chat. She told me that after Russell assaulted Rida, she took to social media to see what people were saying. 'The feedback from the audience at the end of that episode, it felt like the females completely understood what had happened and it was like 50/50 with men', she said. 'I don't want to gender specify because I think that's kind of wrong, but just from a brief view of the audience I think that's so interesting and what you had was really good discussions. 'The comments where people who had been through that were trying to explain what that can feel like and how that is an abuse of power, I think that's really special rather than people just arguing over 'I felt this and I felt that.' There was a learning, which I never thought could come as an outcome from that episode. I thought that was really special and beautiful. She added: 'I also think, because what we filmed was more graphic than that and we tailored it back in the edit, it's exactly how it would be for anyone. If you had your friend go through it, it would be his version of things and her version of things and you don't know what actually happened. It's really cool that Casualty decided to go down that avenue rather than you see it and you know, kind of thing. 'I think it's something like one in eight women have been sexually assaulted in the world and that really played in my mind going forward from this ep, that every one in eight women that Rida encounters, or Sarah encounters, in the world will have been through something like that. It shifted my brain into a different way of thinking, I guess.' Sarah notes that Rida's assault falls under what is sometimes called the 'grey zone'. No-one witnessed the assault, only Rida and Russell know exactly what happened. As a result, the character will be left questioning each moment, wondering whether she's right to speak to someone about Russell. 'I think it's important to highlight that somebody who is plus size and a Muslim, can they be believed? Will the general public, population, HR, hierarchy, believe her versus a really good surgeon – a surgeon who everybody would want to do their surgery if they had to have it. Those are massive factors thrown in and the odds don't look good for her in Rida's head'. She highlighted: 'There's no rule book. She doesn't know what should happen. They tell you when you train to be a nurse to speak to your senior, so that's off the table. Then speak to their senior and that's HR and you see her battling with 'They're not going to believe me and I'm just going to cause trouble.' 'You see the victim-blaming that goes on: 'Maybe I egged it on, maybe I did something to give the wrong clues and the wrong impression to him.' We hear it about girls going to clubs and stuff happening – what were they wearing? Why did they go running at night? You know not to put your headphones in. It's a very clever, very grey-area situation and a lot of women have unfortunately had to go down that path.' Rida spends the majority of her shift tonight building up the courage to tell Siobhan (Melanie Hill) about Russell. She is supported by friend and fellow nurse Cam (Barney Walsh), who knows from experience how supportive and understand Siobhan can be. She will arrive in the office only to find Flynn (Olly Rix) there instead of Siobhan. Flynn explains that Siobhan will return soon, but he has no idea that Rida has spent all day preparing for this exact moment. 'She doesn't have a great track record with clinical leads so that really puts her on the back foot', Sarah explained. 'She's convinced herself she's going to tell Siobhan. You know when you plan out the conversation in your head? I think Rida will have done that with Siobhan and planned out, 'If she says this I'll say this. If she goes down this route I'll tell her this is the truth and this is what happened.' Then the minute she says 'Dr Byron,' it throws her for a loop because it's so embarrassing to tell a guy about something like this. It just is. And then he's clinical lead.' Rida decides to try an tell Flynn about Russell but as soon as his name is mentioned, the situation changes. Sarah reflected: 'Then I think she's like, 'Well I'm here now. I should.' Then he drops the bomb that he is related to Russell and the walls just come up. She's like, 'There you go, he's going to fire me. They're all in on it together'. Don't forget that everything the audience has seen of Flynn, Rida hasn't. She's been upstairs. The only thing she did see was him firing her friend Tariq. So she hasn't seen any of this approachable, lovely guy. 'She just thinks he's another Patrick [a former Clinical Lead, played by Jamie Glover], another bad clinical lead and there is no support for her, a nurse.' As someone who knows what it's like to live with the overwhelming emotions after being sexually assaulted by a colleague, and being forced to work with them afterwards, I was intrigued to know what was ahead for Rida, and whether the truth about Russell would ever get exposed. 'It's only going to be more explosive. It's going to have some twists and turns I really don't think you'll be expecting. It was a joy to film', she teased. 'You'll see a very different side of Rida that we haven't seen in the two years she's been on telly. That was really fun to play.' Sarah is passionate as she talks about Rida's story. She knows from research and simply being a woman in 2025 that this sort of thing happens all of the time, and I couldn't help but thank her for making me and so many other women feel seen. 'I was really, really honoured to be even given a storyline', she smiled. Want to be the first to hear shocking EastEnders spoilers? Who's leaving Coronation Street? The latest gossip from Emmerdale? I've been really lucky that the past two stories I've been involved in have been based on true stories. I'm lucky that Rida has only done true stories so I can really dive into the truth of that. The research is easy and accessible. 'I knew how demanding this would be and how important a story it would be and I wanted to do it justice. She added: 'I met a lot of people who were involved in situations like this. Even as we were filming things were coming out in newspapers that were really similar and it just urged me and pushed me and let me have a voice in the rehearsal rooms and in filming, that we were on the right track. 'It was important to show the shades, the different colours, in these situations and how uncomfortable it can be and how not black and white it is. I think that's the most interesting thing, when it's not black and white.' TV soap story prompts 5,000 blood donations leaving girl's family 'gobsmacked'
An episode of Casualty that aired last year prompted 5,000 new blood donation registrations. All I Want For Christmas, which was broadcasted over the festive period in December, focused on the staff at Holby ED dealing with a shortage of vital bags of donated blood. The instalment had real-life stories interspersed throughout, with one of them focusing on a little girl called Beatrix. The youngster, who is four, spent more than a year in Newcastle's Freeman Hospital waiting for a new heart. She appeared in the special Christmas episode to shine a spotlight on the importance of donating blood. Along with thousands of new blood donations, the episode also resulted in 10,000 extra appointments being made to give blood. Beatrix's father Terry said the scale of the impact was 'staggering' and reiterated how vital blood donations are, pointing out that his daughter's life had been saved 'multiple times over' by them. Beatrix's family, who are from County Durham, filmed for the episode in September at their home and Durham Fire Station. Terry noted that young Beatrix was in her 'element' while filming and loved being cheeky with the crew. The NHS noted 1,200 appointments were booked within the hour after the instalment was broadcasted, and also stated 5,000 donations are needed everyday to meet the needs of hospitals and patients. When Terry learnt about the number of people who had signed up as a result of watching the episode, he was 'absolutely gobsmacked'. 'We owe a massive debt of gratitude to every single person that has given blood and continues to do so', Terry said. Beatrix had her heart transplant in 2022. She needed multiple blood transfusions during and in the run up to the operation. Star Barney Walsh, who plays nurse Cam in the show, reflected on the importance of blood donations in a chat with us back in December. Want to be the first to hear shocking EastEnders spoilers? He said: 'The importance of blood should not be underestimated, because it is the one thing that cannot be replaced and cannot be manufactured. It's either there or it's not. 'From the beginning of the episode, seeing Cam and the particular rigmarole that Cam has to do with the blood from the beginning – out of the fridge into the thing, the clock has to go on, it has to be downstairs by a certain time, has to be on the right shelf at the right time.
