Review – Sex Pistols featuring Frank Carter live ⭐⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
A rare occurrence happened at an outdoor event for the Sex Pistols return to Scotland – it didn't rain. And so Holidays In The Sun was the perfect opener for their front-man Frank Carter to grab his performance by the throat. Heavily tattooed in a black vest, flowing white shirt and Levi denims, he grabbed the mike stand and offered an immediately punchy vocal and stage performance. The 41-year-old got close to hardcore fans down the front and chewed up the occasional negative comment from punk purists. No disrespect to John Lydon, who remains one of the greatest front-men of all time but this potential last run out for the Pistols is potent, especially during these cash-strapped times laced with a sense of injustice and danger from foreign governments. Paul Cook hammered the kit while delivering his melodic drum style that suited the Pistols so well. To hear Steve Jones play the iconic riffs and licks from Never Mind The Bollocks nearly fifty years later is an absolute joy. Sid Vicious might have become the most iconic member of the band but it was Matlock who made an essential musical contribution to tracks such as Pretty Vacant. The backing vocals provided Jones, Cook and Matlock are vital to the sound and they are readily backed up by the crowd while Carter bounded up and down every inch of the Glasgow stage. The mosh pit swirled in full flow during Bodies as fans were dragged over the barrier. God Save The Queen was amplified by the late Jamie Reed's iconic imagery that featured on the 1977 single and an explosion of colour on the big screens. The 'No Future' sing-along ending is sublime. Cook, while drumming, looks out at the reaction with a massive smile on his face while savouring the moment. During No Fun, Steve Jones successfully recreates the unmistakable sound of his hero Mick Ronson nodding to Ziggy Stardust's last concert at the Hammersmith Odeon in 1973. The set closer is what else but Anarchy In The U.K, the song has lost none of its rousing energy. Most fans in the park were youngsters in 1976 but despite arriving for this all day event in the afternoon they were energised and going for it right to the end. It's phantasmagoria of colour and exhilaration between the flashing big screens, the skies starting to bruise and fans going for it one last time. Steve Jones thanked the enthusiastic audience telling them they were 'the best' while looking very much in awe at the reaction of the fans, who continued singing as they headed home in their hundreds on a balmy summer night. Sex Pistols trio make 'secret' celebratory return to iconic London punk venue 100 Club

On September 20, 1976, the Sex Pistols performed at the opening night of the 100 Club Punk Special, a two-night 'festival' showcasing the UK's emerging punk scene, alongside The Clash, Siouxsie and the Banshees, and Subway Sect. Last night, March 21, three of. the original Pistols - guitarist Steve Jones, bassist Glen Matlock, and drummer Paul Cook - returned to the subterranean Oxford Street venue with Frank Carter on vocals, billed as 'The SPOTS' (Sex Pistols On Tour Secretly), the same name the group used for a short UK tour in the summer of 1977. And according to PA News, an exceedingly good time was had by all. Tickets for the 'secret' gig at the 350 capacity club, a warm up show for the quartet's Teenage Cancer Trust performance at London's Royal Albert Hall on March 24, went on sale via a ballot last week, and sold out almost instantly: Paul Weller, Oasis' Noel Gallagher, and Primal Scream's Bobby Gillespie were among those on the guest list. And while John Lydon may have witheringly described the group's return as "karaoke", the reception that the quartet received suggested that there's a genuine appetite and affection for their nostalgic reunion.'It's a pleasure and a privilege to be here with these legends tonight,' Carter told the crowd following the gig's opening one-two punch of Holidays In The Sun, and New York. The band's set also contained classic singles God Save The Queen, Pretty Vacant, and Anarchy In The UK, plus much-loved anthems such as Bodies and EMI. Towards the end of the show, according to PA News, Carter stage-dived into the crowd, before laughingly saying, "Oh fuck, I forgot you're all fucking 60.' The band will open this year's Teenage Cancer Trust week at the Royal Albert Hall on March 24, with support from Kid Kapichi and The Molotovs. "After an incredible 2024, we are itching to get going again this year and what better way than on home territory at a venue that wouldn't have let us near it back in the day!" Steve Jones stated when the show was announced. "Albert will be turning in his tomb. It's an honour to help this great charity." The Sex Pistols returned to the 100 Club on Friday more than 50 years after making their debut at the London venue, ripping through classics such as Pretty Vacant, Holidays In The Sun and God Save The Queen. As the band took to the stage, the crammed venue was just as hot and smelly as it would have been decades ago, with sweat dripping off the walls and ceiling.
