Holyoke DPW increases efforts to curb trash overflow, boost recycling efforts
HOLYOKE, Mass. (WWLP) – The Holyoke Department of Public Works (DPW) is stepping up enforcement to reduce overflowing trash and promote recycling, reminding residents that recycling is mandatory under Massachusetts law. Holyoke school committee member elected President of National School Boards Association DPW workers have recently begun tagging city-issued trash bins that are overfilled to inform residents why their trash was not collected. City officials say that when weekly waste exceeds the capacity of the 96-gallon bins, it often indicates that recyclable materials are improperly mixed in with regular garbage. 'It is important residents follow our trash and recycling expectations,' said Mayor Joshua Garcia. 'We save money when people recycle, and we protect the environment. If we do not see improvement in our recycling and waste disposal practices, we may regretfully have to consider charging for trash pick-up to cover increased costs.' Linda Pratt, chair of the Holyoke Recycling Advisory Committee, emphasized the financial and environmental benefits of proper recycling. 'Increasing recycling means less trash, and that saves city taxpayers money and is good for the planet,' Pratt said. 'Contrary to what many believe, our household recycling does get repurposed.' Currently, Holyoke residents are required to separate recyclables into two categories: cans, bottles, and plastic containers in one bin, and paper and cardboard in another. The city has not yet issued official recycling bins due to budget constraints, but residents are allowed to repurpose old trash cans for recycling purposes, as long as they are clearly labeled. For more information on proper recycling procedures, pickup schedules, and a full list of streets, residents are encouraged to visit the City of Holyoke DPW's website.
