Sunny Deol's Lavish Entourage Includes Gym, Cooks And Badminton Court, Says Puneet Issar: 'Raja Aadmi Hai'

Last Updated: Puneet Issar defends Sunny Deol's lavish entourage, saying the king-size travel costs didn't burden producers. As Bollywood struggles with soaring production costs and underperforming films, one ongoing debate is about the rising expenses caused by stars' large entourages. From personal chefs to stylists, these support teams often add significantly to a film's budget. But actor Puneet Issar recently shared a different take when recalling his experience working with Sunny Deol. During a conversation with Siddharth Kannan, Puneet remembered shooting Border (1997) and said Sunny has always travelled in style—but never at the producer's expense. 'Sunny raja aadmi hai. Woh jahan jaata hai raja ki tarah jata hai. Uska pura entourage chalta hai. Uske cooks bhi aayenge, badminton ka court bhi hoga, pura gym jayega." Puneet said Sunny even went the extra mile to accommodate others. 'He will ask you that I am travelling with all of this weight, if there is anything that you also want to carry so he can load it up as well." He added, 'Sunny is like king, like an emperor. That's the way Sunny Deol is." When asked if today's big entourages were impacting film budgets, Puneet said things were different earlier. 'I don't think Sunny would put the bill on the producer. That's why I said, he is a king. Even Salman is like that. It's a requirement, it's a must for them, they need it, they have to workout." He pointed out that having an entourage isn't new, citing stars from the golden era of Bollywood. 'Rajesh Khanna, Dharmendra, Vinod Khanna, Shatrughan Sinha, Dilip Kumar"—all of them had their people with them on set. Meanwhile, filmmaker Anurag Kashyap has a more critical view of today's spending patterns. In a previous interview with Humans of Cinema, he said a lot of money is being wasted on things that don't improve the film itself. 'They are not spending the money on the film. People need to come back to this whole reality check. One thing people need to understand is that when we make a film, we're working, we're creating something. It's not a holiday, it's not a picnic. A lot of money that is spent doesn't go into making the film. It goes into the paraphernalia; it goes into the entourage. You're shooting in the middle of a jungle, but one car will be sent to the city three hours away specifically to get you that five-star burger you want. You don't get into the process of it." ‘Sunny Deol travels like a king, has a truck full of gym equipment, cooks,' says Puneet Issar: ‘Don't think he asks the producer to pay'

Bollywood has been going through a rather low phase for the last couple of years with only a few films earning decent money at the box office and amid all of this, the conversation around a star's entourage cost has gained steam. It has been reported that the support staff of a film star ends up increasing the cost of the film and with such high budgets, the films are not able to recover their cost upon release. Sunny Deol, however, has been travelling with a giant entourage for years, as shared by actor Puneet Issar. Puneet shared an incident from the shoot of Border, which released in 1997, and said that even back then Sunny would travel 'like a king' and had a truck full of his stuff following him around. But, Puneet claimed that Sunny wasn't burdening his producer with the extra cost. 'Sunny raja aadmi hai. Voh jahan jaata hai raja ki tarah jata hai. Uska pura entourage chalta hai. Uske cooks bhi aayenge, badminton ka court bhi hoga, pura gym jayega. (Sunny is a king. He travels like a king. His entourage travels with him. His cooks also accompany him, his badminton court will also be there, the entire gym set up will also be with him),' Puneet shared in a chat with Siddharth Kannan on his YouTube channel. When asked if he travels with a truck full of his supplies, Puneet said, 'He will ask you that I am travelling with all of this weight, if there is anything that you also want to carry so he can load it up as well.' 'Sunny is like king, like an emperor. That's the way Sunny Deol is,' he said. When asked about the increased entourage cost that has been affecting films' budgets in the last few years, Puneet said that things were different back then and added, 'I don't think Sunny would put the bill on the producer. That's why I said, he is a king. Even Salman is like that. It's a requirement, it's a must for them, they need it, they have to workout.' He named actors like Rajesh Khanna, Dharmendra, Vinod Khanna, Shatrughan Sinha, Dilip Kumar and said that they too, always had multiple people in their entourage. Previously, in a chat with Humans of Cinema, director Anurag Kashyap said that a lot of money was being spent on 'paraphernalia' around the film. 'They are not spending the money on the film. People need to come back to this whole reality check. One thing people need to understand is that when we make a film, we're working, we're creating something. It's not a holiday, it's not a picnic. Actor Amit Sial tears into Anurag Kashyap's remarks on actor's entourage fee

Actor Amit Sial strongly responded to filmmaker-actor Anurag Kashyap's recent remarks regarding actors' entourages and their luxury demands significantly driving up film budgets. Sial questioned Kashyap's criticism, suggesting that such dynamics are well known within the industry and should come as no an interview, he emphasised that producers must be well-prepared to manage these situations rather than expressing regret or blame later. According to Sial, taking responsibility and making informed decisions is key, and lamenting over budget constraints caused by entourage expenses reflects a lack of foresight rather than a genuine speaking to Hindi Rush, Amit Sial said, 'These extra costs and their effects on the film and its overall budget are 100 per cent real. You take someone who is high on a pedestal; you go to him as a producer, knowing damn well who he is as a person and an actor.' He added, 'To expect people to suddenly change into a good actor or person and bring them down to your level just because you wrote a great script is delusional. That person must throw out 500 people like you daily from his life.'Amit Sial, best known for his roles in 'Jamtara' and 'Maharani', continued to say, 'I understand that the costs are high, but you can't choose the wrong people for the kind of film you want to make. You want a huge star who will guarantee you an audience; then you have to bear these costs without complaining. There is no reason to complain; don't do it if you feel like something wrong is happening; no one has kept a gun to your head.'advertisementFor the unversed, the retaliation came after Kashyap's remarks during an interview with Humans of Cinema, where he sparked discussion about industry expenses.'It's not a holiday; it's not a picnic. A lot of the money that is spent doesn't go into making the film. It goes into the paraphernalia; it goes into the entourage. Amit Sial reacts to Anurag Kashyap's comments about entourage costs: ‘Big stars ignore 500 people like you daily'

Anurag Kashyap caused a stir when he made strong statements about the functioning of the industry. The director called out Bollywood entourage costs, which ultimately eats into the budget of a film. In a recent interview, actor Amit Sial reacted to Anurag's comments, saying that he should either follow the system that he is aware of, or cast actors who want to do his 'raw films'. In a chat with Hindi Rush, the actor agreed with Anurag's concerns about the extra costs, but said that a producer should be ready for such things with A-listers. 'Of course, these external factors are a problem. He was saying the right thing. But, without taking any names, if an actor is at a certain level of stardom and a producer approaches them, they already know what's going to happen. Yet they still went to him,' he said. Amit said that one should prefer actors who will happily do their films instead. 'What did you think before going? You will transform that star into a good actor? Aap usko neeche le aaoge kyunki itni kuch mahaan cheez likh di aapne? Vo aapke jaise 500 logon ko nikaal ke phenk deta hoga apni life se roz (You think you've written such a great script that a major star will cut fee? He must be chewing up and spitting out 500 people like you everyday). You can't do such things. If you want to make your raw content, there are other actors for such roles. You should go there,' he added. ALSO READ | Anurag Kashyap declares he is moving out of Mumbai because he is 'disgusted' by Hindi film industry: 'I was ghosted by friends' While the corporate structure has changed the way a film set functions, the financials have also transformed. 'A corporate structure came – it has production designer, casting director, background score, etc. All these never existed earlier. Now that it's there, the paraphernalia of filmmaking has also increased. You will get many people for the type of films you want to make. Don't make poor choices. Par fir jo actors honge, unke naam par film nahi bikegi. Jiske naam par film bikegi, uske lie toh karna hi padega, ghoom fir ke baat vahi agayi. You have to follow the rules to work here. Don't do it if you have problems, no one has a gun to your head,' he asserted. Anurag made his statements about a year ago. In an interview with Humans of Cinema, he complained about budgets being allocated to unnecessary thing, and said, 'It's not a holiday; it's not a picnic. A lot of money that is spent doesn't go into making the film. It goes into the paraphernalia; it goes into the entourage. You're shooting in the middle of a jungle, but one car will be sent to the city three hours away specifically to get you that five-star burger you want.' Amit Sial was last seen in Raid 2, alongside Ajay Devgn, Riteish Deshmukh, Vaani Kapoor, Saurabh Shukla and Rajat Kapoor.
