Palestinians welcome France's move to recognise State of Palestine

RAMALLAH: Palestinians have expressed strong support for France's decision to formally recognise a State of Palestine at the upcoming UN General Assembly. The announcement by French President Emmanuel Macron has been met with optimism, with many hoping it will encourage other nations to follow suit. Hussein al-Sheikh, deputy to Palestinian Authority president Mahmud Abbas, described the move as a reflection of France's commitment to international law. 'This decision supports the Palestinian people's rights to self-determination and the establishment of our independent state,' he said. On the streets of Ramallah, residents shared their reactions with AFP. Mahmoud al-Ifranji called France's pledge 'a moral commitment' and a 'political victory for the Palestinian people.' Another local, Nahed Abu Taima, expressed gratitude, saying, 'We are very grateful for this French position,' while hoping it could contribute to peace amid the ongoing conflict in Gaza. Some Palestinians, however, urged stronger action. Mu'in Barghouti acknowledged the recognition but questioned whether France would take further steps. 'We respect any country that respects our right to establish our state. But will there be practical measures to back this recognition?' he asked. Others suggested that France should impose sanctions on Israel over its occupation of the West Bank. The move has sparked discussions on whether more European nations will now reconsider their stance on Palestinian statehood. - AFP

UAE condemns Israeli vote to annex West Bank in joint statement

The UAE, alongside 11 other countries and organisations, has condemned the Israeli Knesset's vote to impose Israeli sovereignty over the occupied West Bank. A joint statement issued by the UAE, Bahrain, Egypt, Indonesia, Jordan, Nigeria, Palestine, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Turkey, the League of Arab States, and the Organization of Islamic Cooperation, said the resolution, which passed 71-13 in Israel's parliament, is a violation of several UN Security Council resolutions and considered invalid. The signatories said that Israel has 'no sovereignty' over the occupied Palestinian territory and the vote has no legal effect on the status of the territory, adding such Israeli actions only fuel the growing tension in the region, which has been exacerbated by the Israeli aggression on the Gaza Strip and the resulting humanitarian catastrophe. "Israel has no sovereignty over the occupied Palestinian territory and affirm that this unilateral Israeli action has no legal effect and cannot change the legal status of the occupied Palestinian territory, particularly East Jerusalem, which remains an integral part of that territory," the statement said. The parties also called on the international community to "assume their legal and moral responsibilities" and take urgent action to halt "illegal Israeli policies aimed at imposing a fait accompli by force." Lawmakers of the Israeli parliament on Wednesday voted in favour of a non-binding motion put forth by far-right ministers to annex the West Bank. 'The land of Israel belongs to the people of Israel,' declared Knesset Speaker Amir Ohana following the vote. 'These unilateral Israeli actions blatantly violate international law and the ongoing international consensus regarding the status of the Palestinian territories, including the West Bank,'Hussein al-Sheikh, deputy to Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas, said on social media platform X. The symbolic vote comes a year after a similar one was approved by the Israeli legislative body that declared opposition to the establishment of a Palestinian state.

Israeli Forces Escalate Raids in Northern West Bank

DaysofPal – Israeli forces carried out a fresh wave of military raids in the northern occupied West Bank, storming several towns near Tulkarem, amid an intensifying campaign that has led to mass displacement, civilian casualties, and the transformation of entire neighborhoods into military zones. Local sources reported that troops raided the town of Zeita, where soldiers stormed the home of the Ibrahim Abu al-Izz family. The family was forced out at gunpoint, and the home was seized and converted into a military outpost. Soldiers raised the Israeli flag on its roof, a move residents described as both symbolic and provocative. Simultaneously, military vehicles moved into the nearby towns of Anabta and Bal'a, where Israeli forces were seen patrolling residential streets, searching vehicles, and restricting the movement of civilians. According to the Wafa news agency, this escalation is part of a broader and sustained military campaign that has placed the Tulkarem area, including the Tulkarem and Nour Shams refugee camps, under a suffocating siege. Infantry units and armored vehicles have been deployed across main roads and alleyways, with soldiers reportedly firing at anyone attempting to return to their homes or check on their properties. Israeli forces have seized control of large sections of Nablus Street, forcibly evicting residents from several apartment buildings and turning the area into a heavily fortified military zone. Parts of the northern and eastern neighborhoods near the Tulkarem camp remain under direct military control, with checkpoints, bulldozers, and heavy vehicles present throughout the area. Some buildings have now been under occupation control for over four months. The relentless raids have caused widespread destruction and displacement. At least 14 Palestinians have been killed since the beginning of the escalation, including a child and two women, while dozens more have been injured or arrested. The military operations have also caused extensive damage to homes, shops, and infrastructure. Over 25,000 residents, representing more than 5,000 families, have been forcibly displaced from the Tulkarem and Nour Shams camps. More than 600 homes have been completely destroyed, and an additional 2,573 have been partially damaged. The entrances to both camps remain closed off by military barricades, effectively turning them into ghost towns. In a related development, Israeli forces also stormed the village of Marah Rabah, south of Bethlehem. The head of the village council, Hussein al-Sheikh, said that an army unit stationed near the Al-Atqiya Mosque stopped and searched Palestinian vehicles and checked citizens' IDs, adding to growing fears of a broader military expansion across the occupied West Bank. Israeli settlers raid West Bank town, troops kill 3 Palestinians

Dozens of Israeli settlers attacked Kafr Malik in West Bank on Wednesday, sparking a confrontation that ended with Israeli forces killing three Palestinians and wounding seven more. An Israeli military statement said dozens of Israelis set fire to property and military and police forces were dispatched to the scene after receiving a report of ensuing violence that included an exchange of stone-throwing. The military statement said several Palestinians opened fire and hurled rocks at the forces, who returned the fire. Five Israeli suspects were arrested. An Israeli army officer was lightly wounded. Video footage showed at least two cars had been set ablaze. Reuters could not independently verify the video. Hussein al-Sheikh, the deputy to Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, posted on X: "The government of Israel, with its behaviour and decisions, is pushing the region to explode. "We call on the international community to intervene urgently to protect our Palestinian people." Earlier on Wednesday a Palestinian boy was shot dead by the Israeli army during a raid on Al-Yamun, a West Bank town west of Jenin, the Palestinian Red Crescent said.
