Bathukammakunta Lake restoration nearing completion; Hyderabad Disaster Response and Asset Protection Agency (HYDRAA) revives forgotten water body in Amberpet

HYDERABAD: The restoration of Bathukammakunta in Amberpet is nearing completion with Hyderabad Disaster Response and Asset Protection Agency (HYDRAA) leading the effort to bring the lake back to life after years of neglect. Once spread across 14 acres, the lake significantly shrank over time and was completely dry until late 2024. During a desilting and excavation drive, water was unexpectedly found a few feet below the surface, prompting further work to assess and restore the site, HYDRAA commissioner A V Ranganath has said. The lake bed was deepened, accumulated debris was cleared, and steps were taken to allow natural water recharge. Residents in the area have welcomed the changes, noting the return of water and improved surroundings. For many, the site holds cultural value, especially during the Bathukamma festivities. "We are also working on basic amenities around the lake such as walking paths, greenery, and measures to prevent sewage inflow. We aim to make the lake functional both as a water body and a community space, Ranganath added.

HYDRAA holds final demolition notice to Fatima Owaisi college amid PIL: A.V. Ranganath

The Hyderabad Disaster Response and Asset Protection Agency (HYDRAA) has held back the final demolition notice to Fatima Owaisi College, a educational institution serving nearly 10,000 underprivileged Muslim students from kindergarten to post-graduation. HYDRAA Commissioner A.V. Ranganath, revealed during a public interaction on X on Sunday, July 6 that while a preliminary notice had been issued over alleged encroachment on Suram Cheruvu lakebed in Bandlaguda, the final order remains pending due to ongoing Public Interest Litigations (PILs) and the sensitive social implications involved. The Commissioner's comments came as part of a wider engagement with citizens during an X Space, where he fielded questions about parks, land disputes, and illegal constructions across Hyderabad. He said that among the major recoveries, HYDRAA reclaimed properties worth ₹1,000 crore at Bumrah Lake, allegedly involving AIMIM leaders, and another ₹30 crore in Chandrayangutta through encroachment demolitions. Explaining HYDRAA's approach to land disputes, the Commissioner said that upon receiving complaints, an officer conducts preliminary inquiries before calling both parties to submit ownership documents for verification and hearings. All proceedings are video-recorded in the presence of officials to ensure transparency and accountability.

Monsoon preparedness: HYDRAA deploys over 4K personnel in city

Hyderabad: To address monsoon-related problems, the Hyderabad Disaster Response and Asset Protection Agency (HYDRAA) has launched an extensive preparedness drive, mobilizing its Monsoon Emergency Teams (METs) with over 4,100 personnel across the city to ensure safety during rainfall. As part of the initiative, HYDRAA has formed 150 METs that will function 24/7, with each team consisting of four members that operate in three shifts, responding to emergencies like waterlogging, tree falls, and minor urban flooding. These teams are strategically positioned in vulnerable zones across Hyderabad to ensure quick and effective response. According to HYDRAA, a total of 734 staff including 368 personnel from Static Teams, have been deployed exclusively for managing rainwater drainage and preventing water stagnation on key roads and low-lying areas. Their work is aimed at keeping traffic flowing and minimizing damage to infrastructure. These teams will work in two shifts. Furthermore, 51 Disaster Response Force (DRF) teams, each with 18 members, will be on the ground to assist with any emergency situation. DRF teams will also operate in two shifts with six members per shift. To ensure quick mobility, 21 Emergency Bike Teams with 42 personnel will be available. In 30 circles under the GHMC limits, 30 marshals have been assigned. In collaboration with the traffic police, 20 teams consisting of 200 personnel will manage traffic flow during the rains. In addition, 240 workers have been placed on standby for tree branch removal and waste management, with three workers per shift. In total, over 4,100 personnel will be involved in ensuring minimal disruption during the monsoon. HYDRAA Commissioner AV Ranganath highlighted the importance of proactive measures. He directed teams to inspect and clear drains and culverts before the rains to ensure smooth water flow. Additionally, teams are tasked with identifying and addressing potential waterlogging spots in advance.

HYDRAA Tackles Nala Encroachments to Stop Floods in Hyderabad Monsoon

The Hyderabad Disaster Response and Asset Protection Agency (HYDRAA) has been made the main agency to handle floods in Hyderabad during the monsoon. Recently, they received 58 complaints, mostly about blocked drainage channels called nalas and illegal use of government land. People from areas like Durga Province Colony and Ameenpur said their homes flood badly because of these blockages. Langer Houz Cheruvu, a water body, has reduced in size from 36 acres to 24 acres due to illegal occupation. Other places like Maktha Mahaboobpet Cheruvu and some government lands have also been taken over illegally, with the value of this land estimated at Rs. 300 crore. Residents from Pragathi Nagar Colony reported a park was also taken over illegally. With the rainy season coming soon, HYDRAA's job is to clean drains, use pumps to remove water, work with other departments, and check drainage regularly to stop floods. The agency says clearing these illegal blockages is very important to keep Hyderabad safe from flooding.

Muslim, Christian cemetery lands reclaimed in Hyderabad

HYDERABAD: The Hyderabad Disaster Response and Asset Protection Agency (HYDRAA) on Thursday cleared encroachments from Muslim and Christian cemetery lands in Parvathapur, under Peerzadiguda municipal corporation limits in Medchal-Malkajgiri district. The action followed complaints raised in the Prajavani programme by members of the cemetery protection committee, alleging that the decades-old government cemetery was being encroached upon, converted into plots and sold. HYDRAA Commissioner AV Ranganath reviewed satellite images, revenue records and conducted a field inspection before ordering the demolition of the foundations of 15 residential plots, two-metre-high fences, sheds and a few shops. Officials said the encroachments took place during the Covid-19 lockdown. Locals alleged that one Sukhender Reddy led the encroachment by using fake survey numbers and securing unauthorised permissions. He allegedly covered existing graves with soil to conceal them and sold the plots, despite the land being under dispute. His private land is in Survey No. 12, while the cemetery stands on adjacent government land in Survey No. 1. They added that Sukhender is accused of colluding with former Peerzadiguda mayor Jakka Venkat Reddy and former co-option member Jagadishwar Reddy.
