Monsoon preparedness: HYDRAA deploys over 4K personnel in city
As part of the initiative, HYDRAA has formed 150 METs that will function 24/7, with each team consisting of four members that operate in three shifts, responding to emergencies like waterlogging, tree falls, and minor urban flooding. These teams are strategically positioned in vulnerable zones across Hyderabad to ensure quick and effective response.
According to HYDRAA, a total of 734 staff including 368 personnel from Static Teams, have been deployed exclusively for managing rainwater drainage and preventing water stagnation on key roads and low-lying areas. Their work is aimed at keeping traffic flowing and minimizing damage to infrastructure. These teams will work in two shifts.
Furthermore, 51 Disaster Response Force (DRF) teams, each with 18 members, will be on the ground to assist with any emergency situation. DRF teams will also operate in two shifts with six members per shift. To ensure quick mobility, 21 Emergency Bike Teams with 42 personnel will be available.
In 30 circles under the GHMC limits, 30 marshals have been assigned. In collaboration with the traffic police, 20 teams consisting of 200 personnel will manage traffic flow during the rains. In addition, 240 workers have been placed on standby for tree branch removal and waste management, with three workers per shift. In total, over 4,100 personnel will be involved in ensuring minimal disruption during the monsoon.
HYDRAA Commissioner AV Ranganath highlighted the importance of proactive measures. He directed teams to inspect and clear drains and culverts before the rains to ensure smooth water flow. Additionally, teams are tasked with identifying and addressing potential waterlogging spots in advance.

HYDRAA zeroes in on 349 flood zones across 3 segments in city
Hyderabad: With the monsoon season upon us, the Hyderabad Disaster Response and Asset Protection Authority (HYDRAA) has ramped up inter-departmental coordination to prevent road submersion during heavy rainfall. Officials have pinpointed 349 flood-prone areas across the Hyderabad, Cyberabad, and Rachakonda Commissionerates. HYDRAA Commissioner AV Ranganath chaired a crucial coordination meeting with traffic police and other key departmental officials to bolster the city's flood preparedness. Joint CPs Gajarao Bhupal and Joel Davis, HYDRAA Additional Director V Papa Rao, and other vital personnel from traffic and civic bodies were in attendance. During the meeting, the Commissioner emphasised that preventing waterlogging on roads must be a shared objective across all departments. "There must be clarity on how to resolve each problem, and all departments must work in coordination," stated AV Ranganath. Officials have been instructed to remain vigilant in these identified zones as soon as rain alerts are issued. Special attention is being given to whether these areas are linked to nearby lakes and drains, which could exacerbate overflow. "Two hours of rain is causing water to rise by one metre in lakes. But it is taking up to a week for this water to drain out. This calls for an urgent study on lake water levels," he noted. HYDRAA is already engaged in expanding stormwater drains in critical locations such as Patny, Chikoti Gardens, and Chintal Basti in Secunderabad. The Commissioner reminded officials that court rulings explicitly prohibit encroachments on lakes and drains, stressing that such illegal structures must be removed without delay. Furthermore, HYDRAA has identified 50 major trouble spots in the city where flooding is a recurring issue. Commissioner Ranganath underscored that permanent solutions must be prioritised in these areas. To tackle emergencies during heavy rains, HYDRAA is deploying 150 Monsoon Emergency Teams to supplement its existing 51 Disaster Response Teams within the next three days. These teams will work closely with GHMC field staff, ensuring coordination with other departments including the Water Board, Traffic Police, Irrigation, and Electricity. Meanwhile, HYDRAA has introduced a dedicated phone number for citizens to report lake encroachments and violations. Citizens can now directly contact HYDRAA at 7207923085 for immediate reporting of any suspicious activities or encroachments near lakes and water bodies. JCPs Gajarao Bhupal and Joel Davis, HYDRAA Additional Director V Papa Rao and officials from the traffic police and GHMC attended the meeting. Officials highlighted that in several low-lying areas, even a two-hour downpour results in water stagnation that takes up to a week to drain. In response, HYDRAA Commissioner AV Ranganath recommended a study of water levels in holding tanks and reservoirs to improve drainage efficiency. To strengthen the response, 150 monsoon emergency teams will be deployed within three days, supplementing 51 existing HYDRAA Disaster Response Teams.
