Son of Norway's Crown Princess Charged with Raping, Sexually Assaulting Victims in 'Double-Digits'

Oslo police have formally charged Marius Borg Høiby, the eldest son of Norway's Crown Princess Mette-Marit, with multiple serious offenses, including rape, sexual assault, and bodily harm. The charges follow an extensive months-long investigation involving a "double-digit" number of alleged victims. Høiby, 28, the son of Crown Princess Mette-Marit and stepson of the heir to the throne, Crown Prince Haakon, has been under scrutiny since he was repeatedly arrested in 2024 amid allegations of rape and on preliminary charges of bodily harm and criminal damage. At a press conference on Friday, Oslo police attorney Andreas Kruszewski stated that Høiby had been cooperative throughout police interrogations, which have now concluded. Evidence in the case includes text messages, witness statements, and materials gathered during police searches. The charges laid out against Høiby include one count of rape involving intercourse, two counts of rape without intercourse, four counts of sexual assault, and two counts of bodily harm. Kruszewski declined to provide an exact number of victims but confirmed it was in the double digits. Høiby's defense attorney, Petar Sekulic, told the Associated Press in an email that his client is "absolutely taking the accusations very seriously" but "doesn't acknowledge any wrongdoing in most of the cases – especially the cases regarding sexual abuse and violence." The Norwegian Royal Palace has not yet issued a public comment in response to the charges. Høiby, who formerly resided with the royal couple and their two children, now lives in a separate residence nearby. He remains free while awaiting a possible trial and continues to be presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

(AFP) The Norwegian police investigated Høiby for ten months before finally handing the case over to the prosecutors. Though his mom is married to a royal, Høiby does not have a royal title or duties. 'During the investigation, we have both received reports that have led to an investigation, and investigated cases that the police have come across in the investigation material along the way. Criminal cases have been investigated within several categories of cases, including violent and sexual offenses,' Oslo Police District said in a statement. The statement further lists that he is charged with several counts of sexual assault and rape. "I cannot go into further detail about the number of victims in the case beyond confirming that it is a double-digit number," police attorney Andreas Kruszewski told the BBC. Høiby's lawyer, Petar Sekulic, however, said that his client is "taking the accusations very seriously, but doesn't acknowledge any wrongdoing in most of the cases - especially the cases regarding sexual abuse and violence". The Royal House of Norway stated that the case is proceeding through the legal system but didn't provide further details.

The royal palace did not immediately respond to an e-mailed request from the AP seeking comment. The palace was quoted by the Norwegian newswire NTB saying it would not comment while the case winds its way through the 'normal procedures.' The case was top news in Norway, where the royals are popular. Høiby, 28, previously lived with the royal couple and their two children, Princess Ingrid Alexandra and Prince Sverre Magnus, but now lives in a separate house nearby, according to Sekulic. Høiby remains free pending a possible trial and is entitled to a presumption of innocence until a court rules otherwise. Once known affectionately as 'Little Marius,' Høiby grew up in the public eye enjoying the same wealth and privilege as his royal siblings, although his biological father, Morton Borg, served time in prison for drugs and violent offenses. Hoiby has acknowledged cocaine use and addiction. Norway's future queen made headlines in 2001 when she married Haakon because she was a single mother who had lived a freewheeling life with a companion who had been convicted on drug charges. © Copyright 2025 The Associated Press. Eldest son of Norwegian princess accused of multiple rapes and sexual assault

Oslo police have formally charged Marius Borg Høiby, the 28-year-old son of Norway's Crown Princess Mette-Marit, with multiple serious offenses including rape, sexual assault, and physical violence. The charges follow a 10-month investigation involving over a dozen alleged victims, with evidence drawn from witness testimonies, text messages, and forensic searches. Police Attorney Andreas Kruszewski confirmed the charges include one count of rape involving intercourse, two counts of rape without intercourse, four sexual assaults, and two cases of bodily harm. While Høiby cooperated during questioning, his defense lawyer, Petar Sekulic, stated his client "doesn't acknowledge wrongdoing" in most allegations, particularly those involving sexual violence or assault. Høiby remains free pending trial under Norway's presumption of innocence principle. Høiby, stepson of Crown Prince Haakon, grew up alongside his royal half-siblings at the Skaugum estate but holds no formal title or royal role. Once affectionately nicknamed "Little Marius," his adult life has been marred by legal troubles, including a 2017 drug conviction and prior arrests in 2024 for assault and violating restraining orders. The recent investigation uncovered additional allegations from multiple former partners, with police citing incidents at Skaugum and Oslo apartments. Høiby has acknowledged struggles with cocaine addiction and "mental troubles," and spent a week in Hamar Prison during the probe. The royal family, while notified of investigations, has maintained strict silence, deferring to legal "normal procedures". The scandal has intensified scrutiny of Norway's monarchy, historically revered but now facing its "biggest crisis since 1905," according to commentators. Concurrent controversies, including Princess Märtha Louise's marriage to self-proclaimed shaman Durek Verrett, have fueled republican sentiment, doubling membership in anti-monarchy groups. Polls show 45% of Norwegians view the royal family less favorably amid Høiby's case. His ties to criminal circles, including gang members and alleged mafia affiliates, further compound concerns. The palace's strategy of silence contrasts with Høiby's brief 2024 public apology for "alcohol and cocaine-fueled" violence, though he denies all rape claims. The trial date remains unset, with prosecutors reviewing the file .
