(Photo: PTI) The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) are the joint hosts of the ICC T20 World Cup 2026 set to take place early next year. Although India were supposed to be the sole hosts of the tournament, but with Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) refusing tour India and vice-versa, their matches will presumably take place in Sri Lanka along with possibly the semi-final and final if they qualify. The ICC T20 World Cup 2024 was the biggest-ever tournament featuring a mammoth 20 teams for the first time ever which India went on to win in the Caribbean. Defending champions and co-hosts Team India and Sri Lanka are the automatic qualifiers for the tournament which will once again be a 20-team affair. Joining the group of automatic qualifiers from 2024, Canada booked their ticket for a return in 2026, thanks to their win at the recently-concluded Americas Regional Final on home soil. The Canadians completed an undefeated run on their road to India and Sri Lanka, brushing off the likes of Bermuda, Bahamas, and the Cayman Islands. Seven spots remaining for ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2026 🏆 The path to India and Sri Lanka 📲 — ICC (@ICC) July 1, 2025 How many matches will the ICC T20 World Cup 2026 have? The ICC T20 World Cup 2026 is once again going to be 55-match affair, and the tournament will be played out in the same format, with four groups of five, before two Super 8 groups, semi-finals and a final to crown the next champion. Rohit Sharma-led Team India had defeated South Africa in the final to win the T20 World Cup 2024 in Barbados. Before that though, the final seven teams for the tournament need to be decided across the remaining three regional finals. Which teams have already qualified for the T20 World Cup 2026? As hosts, Sri Lanka and India take up the first two spots for 2026. From there, the next 10 spots were determined by Super 8 qualifiers at the 2024 edition and ICC men's T20I Team Rankings at the June 30, 2024 cut-off date. Thanks to their strong opening round performance and entry to the Super Eights, Afghanistan, Australia, Bangladesh, England, South Africa and the West Indies all secured T20 World Cup 2026 spots, as well as USA, who upstaged Pakistan in a Super Over to steal a Second Round spot in Group A. Despite missing out on the Super 8, Pakistan secured their place at the next edition thanks to their T20I ranking, alongside New Zealand and Ireland. Joining Canada will be the final seven entrants for the 2026 edition via the three remaining regional qualifiers.

A Year of Glory: Rohit Sharma expresses gratitude for India's T20 World Cup triumph
New Delhi [India] June 29 (ANI): Indian ODI skipper Rohit Sharma expressed his gratitude as India ended an 11-year-long ICC Trophy drought, beating South Africa by seven runs to capture the ICC T20 World Cup 2024 title for the second time on June 29 last year. Rohit Sharma posted on his Instagram, 'On This Day.' This was Rohit Sharma's 2nd ICC T20 WC title and his first ICC title as a captain, after the heartbreak of losing to Australia in the final of the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 at home following a ten-match win streak. Indian all-rounder Hardik Pandya posted on his Instagram, 'A day I'll never forget. A day we'll never forget. For all of us, India. Indian T20 skipper Suryakumar Yadav also posted on his Instagram, '29th June, 2024 ki yaadein The team that played well and billions of you standing strong behind us, this one was for you all.' India also celebrated the farewell of two giants of Indian cricket, Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, from the T20 format, as they walked away with their heads held high. Indian skipper Rohit Sharma was the star with the bat for India in the tournament. He slammed 257 runs in eight innings, including three fifties, at an average of 36.71 and a strike rate of over 155. He was also the second-highest run scorer in the tournament. On the other hand, in bowling, Indian seamer Arshdeep Singh grabbed the most number of wickets for India in the T20 World Cup. He took 17 wickets in eight innings at an average of 12.64 and an economy rate of under 8. He was the second-highest wicket-taker in the tournament. India had elected to bat first, but was reduced to 34/3. However, it was another clutch effort from Virat Kohli, who had a relatively dull tournament up to that point, that calmed everyone down. Three boundaries within the first few balls he faced was an ominous sign that Team India's biggest match-winner in past T20 WCs was going to be at his best. He also had a fine 72-run stand with Axar Patel, who played a counter-attacking 47 in 31 balls, with a four and four sixes. Virat clobbered 76 in 59 balls, with six fours and two sixes. India reached a fighting 176/7 in their 20 overs. The match hung in balance with a partnership of 58 runs between Quinton de Kock and Tristan Stubbs and a 15th over onslaught on Axar by Klaasen, during which he hit 24 runs, left the game in favour of the Proteas, who needed 30 in the final 30 balls. But in the 16th over, Hardik Pandya removed Klaasen for a well-made 52 in 27 balls, which had two fours and five sixes. From then on, India continued to apply pressure, with the match-sealing moment being Suryakumar Yadav's stunning catch, which saw him go out of the boundary ropes before pulling the delivery back within the ropes and catching it to dismiss a dangerous David Miller in the final over. SA was reduced to 169/8, despite their best efforts. (ANI)

T20 can be US craze like yoga and Bollywood weddings
Cricket - Fifth T20 International - India v England - Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai, India - February 2, 2025 India players lift the trophy and celebrate after winning the t20 series REUTERS/Anushree Fadnavis Cricket - ICC T20 World Cup 2024 - Final - India v South Africa - Kensington Oval, Bridgetown, Barbados - June 29, 2024 General view of India fans in the stands before the match REUTERS/Ash Allen T20 can be US craze like yoga and Bollywood weddings Indian-American businessman Sanjay Govil is convinced Twenty20 cricket can be the next big cultural import into the United States, following a trail blazed by yoga and Bollywood-style weddings. Previous investors have held similar dreams of breaking into the U.S. sports league market, only to be thwarted by the nation's obsession with baseball, basketball and American football. IT entrepreneur Govil, however, is confident that along with Microsoft's India-born CEO Satya Nadella and Silicon Valley's Anand Rajaraman and Venky Harinarayan he can embed the short, jazzy version of cricket deeply into the U.S. sporting landscape "T20 leagues are the future," Govil, who owns Washington Freedom, one of the six franchises in the Major League Cricket (MLC), told Reuters. "Like Yoga, like Bollywood weddings, things from India and it's crazy here. "People here just love Indian wedding. When we have weddings in hotels, people just stop and watch. It's a spectacle, right?" Although cricket originated in England, India is now its financial engine with a cash cow in named the Indian Premier League (IPL) T20 competition, which has a brand value of $12 billion. IPL franchises with deep pockets also own teams in leagues in England, South Africa, United Arab Emirates, West Indies and the United States. The U.S. featured in the first international cricket match, against Canada, in New York in 1844, but cricket remains very much a niche sport in the country. RAISED PROFILE The introduction of the MLC in 2023 and staging matches in last year's T20 World Cup have raised the game's profile. Cricket returning to Olympics after a gap of 128 years at the 2028 Los Angeles Games will be "another big impetus", said Govil, who was born in Canada but grew up in New Delhi before moving to the U.S. Govil, who also owns 50% stake in the Welsh Fire franchise of The Hundred tournament in England, said MLC franchises learned a lot from their interaction with IPL counterparts. "One of the IPL owners came to my house and he educated me on how to build a team," he said. The presence of India's marquee players in the MLC would have been the icing on the cake but Govil respects the Indian board's policy of not allowing its players to take part in leagues abroad. "I'm sure they have some logic behind why they're doing what they're doing, and I respect that," he said. "I have to succeed in the cards which are dealt to me." Govil knows that cricket in the U.S. cannot rely only on the Indian market or south Asian diasporas in order to be successful. "We want to grow domestic talent. We cannot just rely on international players," he said. "We also have to create our own market here, because we cannot just rely on Indian eyeballs watching our matches." "We are in this for a long haul," Govil added. "We are making a lot of investments. We all have to have our own stadiums. "Once we have like eight or nine stadiums, that's when you're going to really see cricket growing in the U.S." REUTERS Join ST's Telegram channel and get the latest breaking news delivered to you.

Rajeev Shukla Breaks Silence On Taking Over As Interim BCCI President: "Useless Talks..."
The Board of Control for Cricket in India vice president Rajeev Shukla believes there is no need to emphasise his potential takeover as the interim president of the BCCI after Roger Binny's tenure ends, considering it is a "procedural" matter. On Monday morning, reports stormed social media about Shukla replacing the current BCCI president, Binny, who will turn 70 on July 19 this year. Shukla, 65, is expected to take over the position on an interim basis for three months. According to sources, with the Annual General Meeting (AGM) in September, the month he would turn 66, he could stand for the post of full-time president in the elections. Shukla addressed the ongoing speculations and classified them as "useless talks." For Shukla, taking over the position on an interim basis is a procedural matter; there is nothing more to it. "These are useless talks. When one spot is about to get vacant, the person next in line gets the interim charge before the election. It is a procedural thing," Shukla told ANI. Roger was elected as the 36th president of BCCI in October 2022, replacing ex-Indian skipper Sourav Ganguly, who completed his three-year tenure. Notably, Binny was the only candidate to have filed a nomination for the top post. During his presidency, India won two white-ball titles: the ICC T20 World Cup 2024 and the ICC Champions Trophy 2025. He also introduced the Women's Premier League (WPL), a women's franchise cricket league modelled after the highly successful cash-rich IPL. During his presidency, several steps related to properly strengthening and prioritising domestic cricket, including better incentives, pay, and senior participation in domestic tournaments, took place. As a bowling all-rounder, Binny has represented India in 27 Test matches and 72 ODIs during his playing days. He took 47 wickets in Tests and scored 830 runs with five half-centuries. In 72 ODIs, he took 77 wickets and scored 629 runs with a half-century. The right-arm pacer bagged 47 wickets in tests while also picking 77 in ODIs. He was a crucial contributor to India's first-ever World Cup victory, taking 18 wickets, the highest number for India in the 1983 World Cup. Binny has previously served as a member of the BCCI selection committee. Listen to the latest songs, only on
