"Unsuitable And Unsafe": Probe Provides New Details In IPL Stampede Controversy

The Justice John Michael D'Cunha Commission, appointed by the Karnataka Government, has deemed the Chinnaswamy Stadium "unsuitable and unsafe for mass gathering", casting a shadow over some big-ticket matches, including the Women's World Cup games scheduled at the venue later this year. The state government constituted the one-man commission after a stampede killed 11 fans and injured scores of others, who had thronged the areas near the stadium to take part in Royal Challengers Bengaluru's maiden IPL title celebration. "The design and structure of the stadium was unsuitable and unsafe for mass gathering," the commission deemed in its report which was recently tabled before the state cabinet, which the PTI has accessed. The Chinnaswamy Stadium is scheduled to host the opening game and the final of the ICC Women's WC later this year, and this observation and its acceptance by the state government could have a wider impact on those matches. It may be recalled that the KSCA has already decided to host this year's Maharaja Trophy T20 tournament, scheduled for next month, behind the doors. Further, the commission noted that the authorities should consider "relocating" large sporting events to venues that have the capacity to hold large gatherings. "Given these systematic limitations the commission strongly recommends that stadium authorities consider relocating events that are expected to attract large crowds to venues that are better suited for such large gatherings," the commission stated. The commission also proposed some remedial measures to avoid such tragic events in future such as "adequate entry-exit gates for mass entry and exit (ingress and egress), and emergency evacuation plans compliant with international safety norms." The commission then deemed that holding "mass events" until these preventive measures are met could cause more damages. "Until such infrastructural changes are made, continuing to host high attendance events at the current location poses unacceptable risks to public safety, urban mobility and emergency preparedness," it said. The commission also suggested initiating legal proceedings KSCA president Raghuram Bhat, now-resigned secretary A Shankar and treasurer ES Jairam, RCB vice-president Rajesh Menon, DNA Entertainment Networks MD T Venkat Vardhan and VP Sunil Mathur. Meanwhile, the DNA has approached the Karnataka High Court against the constitution of the commission and its findings.

Chinnaswamy Stadium unsuitable and unsafe for mass gathering: DCunha Commission

Bengaluru, Jul 25 (PTI) The Justice John Michael D'Cunha Commission, appointed by the Karnataka Government, has deemed the Chinnaswamy Stadium 'unsuitable and unsafe for mass gathering", casting a shadow over some big-ticket matches, including the Women's World Cup games scheduled at the venue later this year. Her standout effort came against Scotland, where she took 4/23 in a rain-affected match. Sana also scored an unbeaten 62 against Thailand, showcasing leadership and composure under pressure. Muneeba Ali, Pakistan's opening batter, made crucial contributions throughout the tournament. She played a vital role in Pakistan's chase of 187 against Scotland, scoring 71 runs and anchoring the innings. Nashra Sandhu was one of the tournament's most consistent bowlers, claiming 10 wickets at an average of 15.60. Her key wickets, particularly against the West Indies, were pivotal to Pakistan's success. Sadia Iqbal also impressed with the ball, taking nine wickets at an economy rate of under four runs per over. Her best performance came with figures of 3/28. Pak women's team players celebrate dismissal of another Scotland player in ICC Women's WC qualifier on Friday. PHOTO: PCB Pakistan rose to the top of the ICC Women's Cricket World Cup 2025 Qualifier tally with their second win on a trot as they edged Scotland in key clash here on Friday. Chasing 187, the hosts closed the game with six wickets in hand, and have four points from two outings at the tournament. Muneeba Ali (71) and Aliya Riaz (64) scored impressive half-centuries to seize a rain-affected game at the Lahore City Cricket Association Ground. Earlier, having won the toss, Pakistan elected to field first after rain had reduced the contest to 32 overs a side. The hosts got off to a strong start with Sadia Iqbal and Diana Baig removing both the Scotland openers in quick succession in the powerplay. Skipper Katherine Bryce then went on to construct a gritty knock of 91 runs off 96 deliveries, including 10 fours and a maximum. Ailsa Lister (31) and Sarah Bruce (21) provided vital support before succumbing as Scotland got to 123/4 from 22.1 overs. Four wickets down, Scotland were unable to make the most of the platform laid as Pakistan's bowling attack tightened the screws. Pakistan skipper Fatima Sana led the charge, nabbing a four-wicket haul as Scotland were restricted for 182/9. In another match on Friday, West Indies held their nerve to beat Ireland in a thriller. Skipper Hayley Matthews led from the front, snapping four wickets. Defending a target of 182, the Windies bowlers kept calm in a nervy affair to close out the game in the final over of a rain-shortened contest. With Ireland having compiled 50 runs in the Powerplay, the West Indies skipper broke the deadlock, cleaning up her Irish counterpart Gaby Lewis before grabbing the catch of Orla Prendergast off her own bowling. Matthews would eventually seal the deal for the Windies, nabbing the final wicket of Arlene Kelly to wrap up a six-run win. While Amy Hunter (48) and Laura Delaney (32) were able to make a mark with the bat, Ireland were unable to close down the chase, despite having pushed the game in their favour with the ball. With a loss in their opening game to Scotland, the Windies were on a hunt for a win to get back on track in the hunt for a Cricket World Cup spot. The game was shortened to 33 overs a side owing to showers earlier in the day. Batting first at the Gaddafi Stadium, Stefanie Taylor and Chinelle Henry (46 each), as well as Zaida James (36), had helped avert an early collapse after Ireland removed in-form skipper Hayley Matthews and Qiana Joseph in the Powerplay.
