Rod Stewart at Glastonbury: Pop superstar brings some Vegas razzmatazz to Worthy Farm, but it's an odd fit

But his superpower has always been his voice, and at 80 it is starting to show signs of wear and tear. Which is not to suggest he can't sing. Give the old crooner a big ballad and he can still wring every last drop of emotion out of it, especially when floating around in the upper edges of a melody. He's a bit wheezing and breathier than in his prime, but his sense of where his voice can slip and slide through a song is second to none. Signature ballads such as The First Cut is the Deepest and I Don't Want To Talk About It were gorgeous in the afternoon sun. A version of I'd Rather Go Blind dedicated to the late Christine McVie of Fleetwood Mac was momentarily stunning, as if the huge occasion had fallen away and we were watching Rod the Mod connect with his beloved soul music in a profound way. But much of the set felt misplaced, as he tried to bring cheesy Vegas razzmatazz to dated pop-rock hits that he no longer has the lung power to fully command. Young Turks was blasted out very fast and quite flat, as if he was straining to sing it in a key out of his natural range. The sentiments of Forever Young are fine, but he needs to sing it better than that to convince us of the merits of growing old disgracefully. It was notable that the vocal energy level shot up when Stewart went off to 'change me shirt and 'ave a cuppa tea' and his trio of female backing vocalists took over for a rip through Proud Mary. I wonder if the occasion actually got a bit too much for him? Which might seem absurd for a performer of Stewart's experience, but he admitted at one point to being 'so excited, I can hardly breathe'. He brought the hits, a slick band, and the desire, but he couldn't quite command a crowd, who only really joined in on the biggest songs, a sing-along of Sailing and a perhaps ironically well-received Da Ya Think I'm Sexy? that Stewart shouted rather than sang. A sign declaring 'Rod you're a plonker' suggested some still needed convincing of his charms. It took the arrival of his old guitar foil Ronnie Wood to really inject some rock spirit as they blasted through a raucous version of the Faces' Stay With Me, before Lulu joined them to charge through a cheesy Hot Legs. It was fun, but I suspect Stewart's ancient guest stars (who included his soundalike Mick Hucknall) don't quite have the wow factor for a younger generation of listeners. There's been a lot of talk about the Middle East, quite rightly so The phrase 'use your platform' has been bandied about a lot this year, as young bands seem to be rediscovering the urge to speak out on issues of the day. Established acts have been less vocal, perhaps more aware of possible career repercussions. Stewart is probably too venerable to worry about reputational risks, and weighed in with: 'There's been a lot of talk about the Middle East, quite rightly so.' But rather than encouraging chants of 'Free Palestine', he dodged to the ironically safer terrain of another war, dedicating a ropey cabaret version of The O'Jays Love Train to 'the Ukraine'. I'm not sure the song's generic universal love sentiments really count as a political statement, but at least he was making an effort to show he was in line with the festival's values. Stewart even brought out festival founder Michael Eavis in a wheelchair to celebrate his 89th 'birthday' (which was actually last October). The bearded old farmer and the pink-suited veteran star looked like a very odd couple, and, in truth, it all felt like a bit of an odd fit − a flashy cabaret in a field rather than a triumphant celebration of a superstar.

PHOTO: AFP GLASTONBURY, England – British singer-songwriter Rod Stewart was joined by fellow singers Ronnie Wood, Lulu and Mick Hucknall for his sun-drenched 'legends' slot at Glastonbury Festival on June 29 afternoon. Stewart entertained a huge crowd on the Pyramid Stage, shouting 'next' between songs to cram as many as possible into his allocated 90 minutes. The 80-year-old performed hits including Maggie May (1971), I Don't Want To Talk About It (1971) and Da Ya Think I'm Sexy? (1978). Hucknall, 65, duetted on If You Don't Know Me By Now (1989), the song his pop band Simply Red took to the top of the charts in 1989. Wood, 78, guitarist of English rock band The Rolling Stones and Stewart's bandmate in English rock band Faces in the 1970s, joined him for Stay With Me (1971). Lulu, 76, then came on stage for Hot Legs (1978). Mr Michael Eavis, who founded the festival that would become Glastonbury over five decades ago on his Somerset dairy farm, was pushed onto the stage in his wheelchair during the set to cheers. The 89-year-old waved to the crowd and was embraced by Stewart. Stewart ended the show with the whole crowd swaying along to his hit Sailing (1975). Sir Rod Stewart's lookalike teenage sons make rare red carpet appearance

Sir Rod Stewart made an appearance with his teenage sons at the Mission Impossible 8 London premiere last night – and the resemblance was uncanny. The Maggie May singer, 80, posed on the Leicester Square red carpet for The Final Reckoning alongside his wife Penny Lancaster, 54, and their two children – Alastair Wallace, 19, and Aiden Patrick, 14. While Penny sported a yellow silky dress and white blazer, Sir Rod wore a velvet jacket with a frilly, unbuttoned white shirt and necklaces underneath. The two teens wore matching black tie suits, and sported similar smart mousey brown haircuts too. While Alastair was Sir Rod and Penny's first child together, the teen was the rocker's seventh child. The Do Ya Think I'm Sexy? hitmaker's first child was Sarah Streeter, now 61, who he welcomed with his girlfriend of the time, Susannah Boffey, when he was just a 'stone broke' teenager. She was put up for adoption, and they reconnected years later. Sir Rod then welcomed Kimberly Stewart, 45, and Sean Stewart, 44, with ex-wife Alana Stewart, Then came Ruby Stewart, 37, who Sir Rod shares with ex-girlfriend Kelly Emberg, before he and ex-wife Rachel Hunter welcomed Renee Stewart, 32, and Liam Stewart, 30. Alastair, who is finding his feet in the world of modelling, seems to have a close relationship with Sir Rod, as they often pose together on social media. A few months after Aiden's birth in 2011, Sir Rod explained that he was hoping to enjoy his kids, rather than focus on his career. He told People: 'I'm trying to make more time now that I've carved out my career. I want to enjoy my kids. We're all planning a massive vacation somewhere. 'It's hard to get them all together because they are all off in different directions. But I am so proud of them.' In 2022, Sir Rod revealed Aiden had been rushed to hospital after he collapsed during a football match. Sir Rod said: 'We thought my boy had a heart attack.' Speaking to FourFourTwo magazine, the singer continued: 'He was going blue and was unconscious until he calmed down. It was scary, but it turned out to be a panic attack. The lad wanted to do well, pulled on the Hoops in Scotland for his dad. This comes in a big year for Sir Rod – who turned 80 in January – as he is set to perform the coveted legend slot on Glastonbury Festival's Pyramid Stage in June. More Trending The legend slot sees music icons of decades-long, award-winning, chart-topping calibre take to the Pyramid Stage on the Sunday afternoon of the festival each year (usually kicking off from 3.15pm to 4.30pm). While there was some backlash at Sir Rod filling the slot, with huge hits including Maggie May, I Don't Want To Talk About It, Do Ya Think I'm Sexy?, All For Love, and Sailing, he does fit the bill. Just last year his Rhythm & Blues Orchestra album with Jools Holland got him his 11th No. 1 UK album, and he's one of the best-selling artists in history having sold over 250million records worldwide.
