Contractual worker of RSP killed in mishap in Odisha
ROURKELA: A 52-year-old contractual worker was killed while reportedly cleaning the outer surface of an oxygen pipe in Rourkela Steel Plant (RSP) of SAIL on Monday. The deceased was identified as Abhiram Mahato of Jareikela, around 40 km from Rourkela. He was engaged by Lucky Construction, a contract firm of RSP. RSP sources said Mahato was engaged in lance jam cutting in the designated area near converter B in basic oxygen furnace shop of the steel melting shop-2. While manually clearing the jam, the crowbar rebounded and pierced through his neck. He was immediately taken to the occupational health service centre and later shifted to the RSP-run Ispat General Hospital (IGH) where he was declared dead. Director in-charge of RSP Alok Verma expressed anguish over Mahato's death and said the management would provide all possible support to the bereaved family. Vice-president of INTUC-affiliated Rourkela Shramik Sangh (RSS) Nihar Das said following the mishap, relatives of the victim worker supported by members of various trade unions staged protest at IGH demanding adequate compensation. The body has been preserved at the morgue of IGH and as per guidelines, eligible member of the bereaved family is entitled for compassionate employment, Das added.

Protest over contractual worker's death in Rourkela Steel Plant
ROURKELA: A 29-year contractual worker died under mysterious circumstances near the coke oven battery-3 of Rourkela Steel Plant (RSP) here on Friday morning. The deceased was identified as Gopi Hembram (29) of Lal Tanki area in Rourkela. He was working for RSP's contract firm Utkal Projects Pvt Ltd. Vice-president of INTUC-affiliated Rourkela Shramik Sangh (RSS) Nihar Das said at around 8.30 am, Gopi was working at the coke oven battery-3 when he suddenly collapsed. The worker was taken to the RSP-run Ispat General Hospital (IGH) where the doctors declared him brought dead. Following the incident, various trade unions including INTUC, CITU and others demanded compensation and job assistance for the bereaved family. They said the contract worker has left behind his widow and two-year-old son who have none to look after them. Sources said Gopi's relatives and other contractual workers also staged protest at IGH, refusing to take possession of his body till fulfilment of the demands. The protest was continuing till the report was filed.

Demand for unification of IPGISSH and IGH grows
ROURKELA: Demand is growing for development of a comprehensive medical institution with unification of the new Ispat Post-Graduate Institute and Super Specialty Hospital (IPGISSH) and Ispat General Hospital (IGH), both under the Rourkela Steel Plant (RSP) of SAIL. In 2015, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had announced to upgrade the IGH into a medical college and super specialty hospital. Instead, the RSP constructed the IPGISSH on the vacant land of IGH with Central funds. The IPGISSH was inaugurated in March 2021 without the PG institute. In a letter to the PM, senior BJP leader Ramesh Agarwal said the IPGISSH established with Rs 350 crore Central funds has been addressing the need for specialised healthcare, but the PG institute is yet to come into existence. The RSP spends around Rs 80-Rs 90 crore annually towards its employee health benefit scheme. Yet, due to limitations in modern infrastructure of IGH and the Sector-22 hospital, many RSP employees and their families still seek treatment in referred hospitals across Odisha and beyond. Agarwal said the IGH is already running a nursing institution. The IPGISSH with its unused infrastructure of the PG institute shares common boundary with the IGH. Unifying these institutions would require minimal physical restructuring and can immediately serve as a well-integrated hub for healthcare and medical education in eastern India, he added.
