Two months after the death of Aubrey Plaza's husband, a key detail has emerged

Aubrey Plaza was having marital issues with her husband at the time of his death in January, according to new information released by Los Angeles County Medical Examiner's Department. The 47-year-old filmmaker, who was born in Miami and attended Killian High in Kendall, died by suicide; no foul play was suspected. The coroner's report, obtained by numerous media outlets, stated that Plaza and Baena had not been living together since September, per a statement the 40-year-old actress provided to police. She had moved to New York while the prolific writer-director ('I Heart Huckabees,' 'Life After Beth,' 'The Little Hours' ) stayed in L.A. About a month into their separation, Plaza relayed to cops that after Baena made undisclosed 'concerning remarks,' the 'Parks and Recreation' alum had a friend do a welfare check on him. After that visit, Baena entered therapy, the coroner's report says. The last time Plaza heard from her husband was via text hours before his death at 10:36 a.m.; the contents of that message were not included in the report. Baena's dog walker was the one to discover the body that day. Baena is survived by Plaza, mother Barbara Stern and stepfather Roger Stern, father Scott Baena and stepmother Michele Baena, brother Brad Baena and stepsiblings Bianca Gabay and Jed Fluxman. 'This is an unimaginable tragedy,' a statement on behalf of Plaza and the Baena family read, soon after the tragic news broke. 'We are deeply grateful to everyone who has offered support. Please respect our privacy during this time.' Aubrey Plaza makes first public appearance since husband Jeff Baena's death

Listen to article Aubrey Plaza stepped into the public eye for the first time since the tragic passing of her husband, filmmaker Jeff Baena. The 40-year-old actress attended the SNL50: The Anniversary Special event in New York City on Sunday, February 16, where she introduced musical guests Miley Cyrus and Brittany Howard. Plaza, however, skipped the red carpet ahead of the event. Baena, known for films such as I Heart Huckabees (2004), Life After Beth (2014), Horse Girl (2020), and Spin Me Round (2022), was found dead at a Los Angeles-area home on January 3, 2025. According to TMZ, his body was discovered by an assistant and he was pronounced dead at the scene. The Los Angeles Medical Examiner later ruled his death a suicide. Plaza and Baena had been together for over a decade, starting their relationship in 2011 before tying the knot in 2021. Following his passing, Plaza and Baena's family released a statement to PEOPLE on January 6, saying: "This is an unimaginable tragedy. We are deeply grateful to everyone who has offered support. Please respect our privacy during this time." A funeral service was held for Baena in Miami on January 10, where loved ones gathered to honor his memory. An obituary published in the Miami Herald described him as "a beloved son, husband, brother, uncle, and friend to many." It highlighted his passion for storytelling and his ability to bring people together, both on and off movie sets. The obituary also referenced Baena's childhood love for Antoine de Saint-Exupéry's The Little Prince, noting the poignant words from the book: "Ironically, in it, the Little Prince exclaims, 'I haven't much time. I have friends to find and so many things to learn.' And so it was for Jeff." Concluding with a heartfelt tribute, the obituary read: "We shall always love and deeply miss Jeff. His presence, as well as his work, made the world feel better. He had lots more to offer. Alas, all that is gone. Sweet dreams, our Little Prince." At the SNL50 event, Plaza appeared somber yet composed, dressed in black dress pants, a black blazer, and a simple tee underneath. While she did not address Baena's passing during the event, her quiet return to the spotlight marked a significant moment following weeks of mourning.

Aubrey Plaza makes first public appearance since husband's death in Super Bowl ad

Aubrey Plaza made an appearance during Super Bowl LIX on Sunday in an advertisement for Ritz crackers. The commercial aired just over a month after her husband Jeff Baena died by suicide at the age of 47 on January 3. The ad, which was filmed in November 2024, features Plaza and fellow actor Michael Shannon arriving at the fictional Ritz Salty Club. The commercial plays off the pair's notoriously unamused facial expressions and dry personas. "These are our people," Plaza says, and Shannon adds, "our salty brethren." Plaza claims she's the saltiest in the club, to which Shannon replies, "Saltier than me? When I smile, people think it's a glitch." "Oh, please," Plaza fires back. "I'm the human version of Monday," she says before hissing. Puerto Rican rapper Bad Bunny then arrives grinning. "Read the sign, buddy!" Shannon yells as the camera pans to a big red sign that reads, "No smiles allowed.' The ad marks Plaza's first public appearance since Baena's death. In a statement shared with The Independent at the time, Plaza said: 'This is an unimaginable tragedy. We are deeply grateful to everyone who has offered support. Please respect our privacy during this time.' Baena and Plaza began dating in 2011 and married 10 years later. Baena achieved recognition when he co-wrote the 2004 film I Heart Huckabees with director David O'Russell, receiving a Gotham Award nomination for Best Feature. Among his other credits were the films Life After Beth (2014), The Little Hours (2017) and the Netflix movie Horse Girl (2020).
