TN to host one of five carbon capture testbeds for cement industry

CHENNAI: Tamil Nadu has been selected as one of the five locations in India to host a pioneering Carbon Capture and Utilisation (CCU) testbed aimed at reducing carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions in the cement sector, which contributes nearly 7-8% of the country's industrial carbon emissions. The testbed will be established at Ultratech Cement's Reddipalayam plant in Ariyalur district, with technical support from the Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT-M) and the Birla Institute of Technology and Science (BITS), Pilani, Goa campus. The initiative is part of a national programme spearheaded by the Department of Science and Technology to validate and demonstrate CCU technologies. These technologies aim to capture CO2 emissions and convert them into value-added products such as synthetic fuels, urea, soda ash, concrete aggregates, and food-grade CO2. At the Reddipalayam site, the testbed will trial an oxygen-enriched combustion-based kiln burning system. The captured CO2 – up to 2 tonnes per day – will be mineralised using concrete blocks, waste concrete fines, and concrete plant sludge. Besides Tamil Nadu, CCU testbeds are also being set up in Chittorgarh (Rajasthan), Sundergarh and Rajgangpur (Odisha), and Kurnool (Andhra Pradesh), each testing different technological solutions. Union Minister for Science and Technology and Earth Sciences Jitendra Singh said the DST is currently processing financial sanctions for the projects.

"The students trained in AI technology will join the global workforce. We are in the process of onboarding the third batch of MTech students," said professor Preeti Aghalayam, director of IIT Madras Zanzibar campus. Lela Mohamed Mussa, minister of education and vocational training, Zanzibar, presided over the degree distribution ceremony. Commending the day as historic for Zanzibar and Tanzania, she said, "The Zanzibar campus is a symbol of international cooperation." She also praised the Zanzibar President Hussein Ali Mwinyi and IIT-M for establishing a world-class academic institution on the island. Professor Mohammed Sheikh, chair of the IIT-M Zanzibar Governing Council, urged graduates to serve as ambassadors for the India-Zanzibar partnership. The campus, which is situated on a 4.5 acre transit campus, will move to a 200-acre permanent campus soon. The campus is now home to 105 students, with 30% women. Students are from India, Nepal, mainland Tanzania, Zanzibar island, Kenya, and Zambia. The campus is also planning to launch more degrees in the coming years. "The IIT-M Zanzibar campus is also studying the needs of the local industries to design new courses. Lighter IIT-M wheelchair costs 1/3rd of existing models

Chennai: A wheelchair developed by IIT Madras that is 50% lighter than similar existing models and costs one third of them was launched on Wednesday. Named YD One, after the late paraplegic rehabilitation advocate S Vaidyanathan, the wheelchair is made of aerospace-grade aluminium and can be customised to suit a user's body, posture, and daily mobility needs. Weighing 8.5kg, YD One was developed by engineers at the TTK Centre for Rehabilitation Research and Device Development (R2D2) at IIT-M in collaboration with users and clinicians. It can support up to 120kg and is designed to be easy to lift, handle, and stow in cars, autos, or public transport. It can also be used by beginners taking up sports. The institute transferred the tech to Thryv Mobility, an IIT-M incubated startup, for commercial manufacturing. The wheelchair is expected to retail at under 75,000, nearly one-third the cost of similar wheelchairs in international markets. Our products offer unique advantages globally. We are proud to work with passionate startups to offer affordable choices." Justin Jesudas, co-founder of Thyrv Mobility, said the wheelchair features a mono-tube rigid frame with an ISO-specified load capacity of 120kg. It passed two lakh double drum test cycles and 6,666 drop tests. The wheelchair was unveiled by Surgeon Vice Admiral Anupam Kapur, Director General Hospital Services (Armed Forces), in the presence of IIT-M Director V Kamakoti. At present, many rely on heavy, poorly fitted hospital-style wheelchairs designed for short-term indoor use, often requiring assistance. Among the 20 early users present at the event was M Jennifer Sheeba, 38, a basketball and table tennis player. "Hospital-style wheelchairs limited my movement, and I often needed help to get around. With YD One, I can move independently; I can even climb stairs," she said.

Doval asks IIT grads to be India's tech warriors

Chennai: Graduates from campuses such as IIT Madras should become technology warriors as India marches towards its 100th year of Independence in the next 22 years, National security advisor Ajit Doval said on Friday. Addressing a gathering at the 62nd convocation of IIT-M, he said the young force should contribute to defence, manufacturing and socio-economic development. Citing the example of mathematician Alan Turing, who broke the German military's Enigma code in World War II and helped the allied forces to end the war, Doval said: "The country's GDP will be $32 trillion in 2047 as against $4.1 trillion now. The per capita income would be $22,000 from $2,500 now. We will have the world's largest military force. We will have a 1.1 billion working population. In contrast, China will have 23% less population. And you are the X factor," he said. IIT-M director V Kamakoti said the institute jumped 47 positions in the QS World University Rankings 2026 to be ranked 180th over the previous year when it was ranked 227th. "In 2024-25, the institute received sanction for 302 sponsored projects with a total value of 317 crores, mostly funded by govt agencies. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Forget Furosemide, Use This Household Item To Help Drain Edema Fluid WellnessGuide Learn more Undo Our strong industry collaboration is evident from the 982 consultancy and industry-sponsored research projects received this financial year amounting to 906 crore.
