Qatar affirms its interest in protecting heritage sites at risk

QNA Paris Permanent Representative of the State of Qatar to the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) HE Dr Nasser bin Hamad Al Henzab has affirmed that Qatar, through its membership in the World Heritage Committee, attaches great importance to the protection and rehabilitation of heritage sites in danger. This came during his participation in an event titled 'ISESCO Strategy to Support the Withdrawal of Member States' Properties from the List of World Heritage in Danger,' organised by the Islamic World Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (ISESCO) in cooperation with a number of partners on the sidelines of the 47th session of the World Heritage Committee, held at UNESCO Headquarters in Paris from July 6 to 16. Al Henzab emphasized that protecting endangered sites is a shared international responsibility that requires coordinated action, innovative tools, and strong partnerships. He noted that through this cooperation, 'we can support the final removal of sites from the List of World Heritage in Danger, particularly in ISESCO Member States.' He said that the State of Qatar, through its competent national institutions, is fully committed to this effort, investing in advanced database systems that enhance transparency, accountability, and the protection of cultural property. This enables accurate documentation and monitoring, helping to prevent illicit trafficking, which continues to pose a significant threat to endangered heritage sites. Dr Nasser Al Henzab added, 'We recognise that meaningful progress requires the participation of all stakeholders: heritage institutions, customs, law enforcement authorities, and international organizations. By empowering frontline workers with knowledge and technology, we can better detect and prevent the illicit transfer of cultural assets.' He emphasised Qatar's support for ISESCO's strategy, its efforts to encourage best practices, support regional cooperation, and strengthen preventive frameworks to ensure the survival of threatened sites.

ISESCO enhances knowledge partnerships for sustainable development

More knowledge-based world The Office is keen to implement a set of qualitative programmes and initiatives that contribute to translating ISESCO's vision for a more knowledge-based world. This is achieved by enhancing communication with academic and research institutions, as well as cultural and development institutions within and outside the United Arab Emirates, with a view to cooperation among the countries of the Islamic world and building sustainable bridges of cultural and scientific integration. This builds on the successful projects implemented in previous periods that have contributed to supporting the education system, in addition to actively contributing to organizing academic events and meetings that enhance opportunities for intellectual convergence and open broader avenues for cooperation between relevant institutions. Supporting the knowledge economy In this context, the ISESCO Regional Office in Sharjah is working to expand the scope of its joint programmes to include the development of initiatives in the fields of science, technology, and artificial intelligence. This is in line with global trends in supporting the knowledge economy and enhancing the position of scientific institutions in the Islamic world as a soft power contributing to building the future. Nurturing entrepreneurial environment Focusing on continuing to launch innovative educational and cultural projects aimed at supporting local skills and competencies and nurturing the entrepreneurial environment is also being emphasised. These projects also contribute to the development of language and culture and the strengthening of cultural identity in light of the challenges of accelerating globalisation. Organising scientific events The Office also continues to develop its plan and partnerships to organise scientific conferences and forums that bring together academic elites, experts, and researchers from various Member States. These events provide effective platforms for dialogue and cooperation and foster a spirit of scientific solidarity among Islamic societies, in line with the Emirate of Sharjah's vision as a regional and international hub for knowledge, culture, and innovation. His Excellency Salem Omar Salem, Director of the ISESCO Regional Office in Sharjah, emphasised that the Office is keen to expand partnerships and cooperation with national, regional, and international institutions to support education and scientific research, empower youth, and enhance the Islamic world's contribution to building a knowledge society. Achieving the sustainable development goals Salem explained that the focus in the next phase will be on continuing to support projects that have positive impacts on societies and contribute to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), through pioneering initiatives in the fields of innovation, training, and cultural and educational empowerment, particularly in various fields.

Tunisia to Host Prestigious ISESCO Executive Council Meeting

The Islamic World Organization for Education, Science, and Culture (ISESCO) will hold its 45th Executive Council meeting under the patronage of Tunisian President Kais Saied on February 25 and 26 in Tunisia. This session will see the participation of delegations from the organization's member countries. The announcement followed a meeting between President Saied and ISESCO's Director-General, Dr. Salem bin Mohammed Al-Malik, at the Carthage Palace in Tunis, as part of an official visit by the delegation to Tunisia. ISESCO's statement highlighted that during this meeting, the Director-General thanked President Saied for his support, emphasizing that this reflects the Tunisian leadership's belief in the organization's role, especially after its developments over the past five years, and its pioneering efforts in education, science, and culture. Dr. Al-Malik noted that hosting the Executive Council meeting in Tunisia will significantly enhance the cooperation between ISESCO and Tunisia.
