Post offices across India to start digital payments from August 2025

Payment at post offices across India will soon become easier. The Department of Posts has announced plans for all post offices to accept digital payments at their counters from August 2025. This will be possible after upgrading the information technology system, which is being called IT 2.0, to provide digital payments through dynamic QR coding, which links to UPI. Officials said that the Department of Posts would provide help for customers who want to pay digitally instead of now, post offices in India could not accept digital payments because the systems could not communicate with UPI (Unified Payment Interface). That is changing. The IT 2.0 upgrade will provide an application that will allow counters to generate unique dynamic QR codes for each transaction, making it easier and safer for customers wishing to pay for a service has been a pilot rollout of the new system in Karnataka already. All the head offices in Mysore, Bagalkot, and several small offices have successfully implemented QR-based booking of mail products. According to officials, the new payment system capable of making digital payments will be in place across all post offices in the coming years and is expected to be ready by August 2025. Previously, the Department of Posts had implemented static QR codes at counters to facilitate digital payments. However, this initiative faced technical concerns and a significant number of complaints from customers, which led to its termination. The department has now taken the lessons from that experience and decided to implement dynamic QR codes. Dynamic QR codes are generated in real-time for each transaction and allow customers to make payments securely and more reliably than static is expected to improve access for millions of people visiting post offices daily, and particularly customers in rural and semi-urban areas, to undergo digital payments for services such as postage, parcels, and deposits into savings schemes. This initiative is also seen as part of the broader push towards a cashless India.- Ends

Dept of posts launches digital services in Madikeri

Madikeri: The department of posts introduced IT 2.0 technology, which was launched at Madikeri head post office on Monday. The Centre for Excellence in Postal Technology (CEPT), Mysuru, developed IT 2.0 for the department of posts, digitalising its services comprehensively. The postmen will now utilise an updated application system. Previously, postal staff recorded deliveries upon returning to the office. Currently, they can instantly record deliveries through the MAA, which is an internal mobile app. The new Open Network system resolves previous connectivity issues in rural areas. Unlike the former SAP technology, postal services now function smoothly by accessing various telecom networks, including BSNL, ensuring consistent service delivery. Customers can now pay for postal services through UPI platforms. This facility was previously limited to head offices, but has now been expanded to rural sub-offices, improving accessibility. DigiPIN system The new system, with a 10-digit alphanumeric DigiPIN for precise delivery services, has been introduced. Superintendent of posts (Kodagu circle) SP Ravi launched the facility. Assistant superintendent KM Gajendra, deputy inspector BD Manjunath, and postmaster SV Manjunath were present.

Postal export centres allow only cash payments despite digital push

Hubballi: Despite the nationwide push for digital payments, post offices in Hubballi-Dharwad are yet to adopt the change. Citizens looking to send parcels through Dak Ghar Niryat Kendra are being asked to pay in cash, as digital payment options are unavailable. This includes the head post office and several sub-offices. Officials said they raised the matter with higher authorities, but for now, customers must rely solely on cash. However, sources in the postal department revealed that non-cash transactions are not incorporated in any post office of the state. Sharing his experience with TOI, Lingaraj Dharwad, a social activist in Hubballi, said that he went to the head post office to post some material to his son living in Italy. "After packing and weighing, I had to pay Rs 13,000. I intended to pay using UPI, but I was told I needed to pay only by cash. When I enquired about it with higher officials there, they did not answer properly. How can they expect us to carry cash of such a big amount?" he questioned. Shivanand, a senior citizen, said that he visited post offices to send some envelopes to his daughter living in California. "When I asked for digital payment platforms, postal staff treated me like an alien. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 5 Books Warren Buffett Wants You to Read In 2025 Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo The amount was about Rs 15,000, but we get only Rs 10,000 at the ATM set by the postal department itself. I don't know why the postal department is still engaged in only cash transactions. Irked by this, we have stopped availing postal services and are sending through private courier agencies," he asserted. Ravi Kantanavar, a retired employee, said that he was told that UPI companies did not make an agreement with the department due to some technical reasons. "However, customers can make payments through Indian Post Payment Bank," he suggested. However, Col Sushil Kumar, post master general, NK Region, Dharwad, was neither available over the phone nor responded to the mail query made in this regard. Meanwhile, sources in the department said the IT 2.0 software version is being upgraded and it will be open for all non-cash transactions soon.
