Lewis Hamilton shares how the latest generation of F1 drivers are different
Lewis Hamilton has highlighted the significant online abuse faced by the current generation of Formula One drivers on social media. Drivers like Jack Doohan, Yuki Tsunoda, and F2 championship leader Alex Dunne have experienced online abuse this season, with Lando Norris admitting he no longer uses social media. Doohan and Tsunoda specifically faced abuse from fans of Franco Colapinto following incidents in Imola. The seven-time world champion, who debuted in F1 in 2007, noted that the sport's increased fame and the prevalence of social media have made it more intense for today's drivers compared to his early career. Despite the challenges, Hamilton praised the maturity of young drivers in handling the weight of online scrutiny and increased demands outside the car. Kimi Antonelli, 18, skips F1: The Movie red carpet to graduate from SCHOOL ahead of Austrian GP
CELEBRATIONS are coming at breakneck speed for Formula One star Kimi Antonelli. Less than two weeks ago, at the age of 18 years and 294 days old, he became F1 's third-youngest podium sitter ever with a third-place finish at the Canadian Grand Prix. 5 But just over a week later, the teenage superstar was celebrating another major milestone as he graduated from SCHOOL. Following his maiden podium in Montreal, Antonelli returned home to Casalecchio di Reno, Italy, to sit his final exams. On Monday evening, the Mercedes rookie shared a picture on Instagram showing him wearing a celebratory green and red garland on his head. He captioned the image, "promosso," which is Italian for "passed". Reporters swarmed outside his school afterwards, eager to get a word with the rapidly rising F1 star. He said: "I was fairly stressed, because I didn't have much time to study. But I did my best." Antonelli has been juggling his academic studies with his duties as an F1 driver in the first half of the 2025 season, putting his life in the fast lane into overdrive. His attendance at school meant he skipped the red carpet for the premiere of F1: The Movie in London. Earlier this year Antonelli invited 25 of his classmates to join him at his home race in the Imola Grand Prix. But now having completed his schooling he can fully prepare for the remaining 14 rounds of the F1 world championship. Meet F1 2025 rookies including star gifted first go-kart by Michael Schumacher and Brit teen who's already a millionaire So far he has notched up 63 points, 16 behind the driver he replaced at the Silver Arrows, Lewis Hamilton. Hamilton and Co dressed to impress during the Leicester Square premiere, with the likes of Brad Pitt, Tate McRae and Tom Cruise all dazzling in the capital. A New York event in the previous week with his fellow speedsters was passed up by Antonelli too, though Max Verstappen also skipped the event to be at home with his new baby daughter. The next F1 race commences in Austria this weekend, with McLaren 's Oscar Piastri leading the World Drivers Championship by 22 points after team-mate Lando Norris crashed out of the race.

Lewis Hamilton reacts to ‘significant' social media abuse F1 drivers face
Lewis Hamilton has spoken out about the 'significant' abuse the current generation of Formula One drivers face on social media. The seven-time F1 world champion, 40, is the most-followed driver on Instagram with nearly 40 million followers, but did recently unfollow everybody he previously followed on his account. Jack Doohan, Yuki Tsunoda and F2 championship leader Alex Dunne are among the drivers who have experienced abuse online this year, while Lando Norris admitted he's no longer using social media. Doohan and his father, Mick, faced abuse from fans of Franco Colapinto in Imola last month, while Japanese driver Tsunoda also was on the receiving end of abuse from the same fanbase. Hamilton, in his 19th season in the sport, believes the current staple of drivers have been 'amazing' and 'mature' in the face of online abuse. 'The times have changed,' Hamilton, who co-produced the new F1 Movie, said. 'I would say the racing space has probably got a lot busier with the fame of the sport, so it's probably more intense. 'The media is more reactive, maybe. You've got social media presence and online abuse that we didn't have when I got into the sport. 'It's been pretty amazing to see how mature the young drivers that have come in – young men that have come in – have adapted and how they've carried that weight, because it's no easy situation to be thrown into.' Hamilton made his F1 debut in 2007 – almost winning the world championship with McLaren in his rookie year – and acknowledged he is grateful now that he didn't have to deal with social media. 'When I got there, it felt like being thrown into the deep end without having the skills to keep yourself afloat,' he said. 'But there wasn't the online stuff that you could see, and that's significant. 'There are probably even more demands on the drivers today, outside of the car, than ever before.' Hamilton, who joined Ferrari in the off-season, will be eyeing his first grand prix podium at the next race in Austria this weekend, before his home race at Silverstone next week (4-6 July).

Thailand cabinet approves bid to host Bangkok F1 race
Thailand moved a step closer to staging Formula One on the streets of Bangkok when the cabinet Tuesday formally approved a government bid to host a race. The bid, worth a reported $1.2 billion, would see the Thai capital host races from 2028 to 2032, if it is successful when it is submitted to the sport's governing body. Thai Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra has held multiple meetings with F1 chief Stefano Domenicali in recent months to push the project forward, including last month in Monaco, home to the sport's most storied street race. The layout of the potential Bangkok street circuit has not been revealed but government spokesman Jirayu Houngsub said it could include an area near Chatuchak market in the north of the city, which is a magnet for tourists every weekend. The Thai government has touted the idea of a 'sustainable' race and said the grand prix could benefit the kingdom to the tune of $600 million. Most of Formula One's 24-race schedule is confirmed for several years but gaps are set to open up and Domenicali has suggested that Thailand could be a contender to join the circuit. McLaren opens up about secrets of Oscar Piastri's speed
'Trying to find little bits everywhere' was how Oscar Piastri described the marginal-gains approach he feels has boosted him to four grand prix wins this season and the championship lead. 'It's quite a different feeling when you win a race because you feel like you've just gotten by or had good circumstances,' he said in the FIA press conference ahead of the Imola GP. 'But to now be winning because we have an incredibly quick car and I feel like I'm driving well, that's very satisfying.' Advertisement McLaren Formula 1 team principal Andrea Stella, who has worked with the likes of Michael Schumacher and Fernando Alonso as a race engineer, knows what greatness looks like and was typically detailed when asked what Piastri had done to elevate himself to the next level this season. 'Well, I think the most important improvement, if anything, is that Oscar has become a faster driver,' said Stella. 'I think when you're a faster driver, then you have more opportunity to process, more time to process, more bandwidth to process things. This is true when you are in the car, and this is also true when you are outside the car – because, like, the speed is there, let's process all the other marginal gains that will then, at the end of the weekend, constitute the performance you need to have the kind of results he's having at the moment.' Piastri had talked about using his time more intelligently, and identifying particular areas of improvement rather than, say, spend more hours in the simulator. Oscar Piastri, McLaren Oscar Piastri, McLaren Steven Tee / LAT Images via Getty Images Steven Tee / LAT Images via Getty Images Advertisement 'It's just been about how you do things more efficiently,' he said. 'How you take the next step up in your preparation. 'Experience naturally helps. Some of the things that you have to concentrate on become more natural, so you're constantly learning – and that experience definitely helps. 'But the preparation has mostly been the same. We've just been trying to find those little bits in every column. There hasn't been one big change – just trying to find little bits everywhere.' Team insiders say that while much of the commentary surrounding Piastri has focused on him needing to sharpen up on qualifying performance and tyre management during his first two seasons, to express this in such binary terms was doing Oscar a disservice. They say he was operating at a very high level when he arrived at McLaren, and that the disparities between him and team-mate Lando Norris in terms of one-lap pace and tyre-whispering were very small. Advertisement They also say he has a remarkable ability to assess a lap in terms of where he can improve and how much time could be found where – before looking at the data to prove it out. Being at a different part of his evolutionary curve as a young driver has also helped him to adapt quickly to some of the eccentricities of the cars he has driven. But he hasn't done it on his own. Stella also signalled the influence of Piastri's 'support network' – not just the engineers he works with, but the gritty former F1 driver who superintends his business affairs and is always on hand with sage advice. 'Over the winter, there's been a very specific amount of work that has paid attention to different areas, it's been quite holistic,' said Stella. 'And while Oscar is definitely the main one to praise for these developments, I would like to mention the team around Oscar – his engineers and all the support from the factory, with all the analysis. And even the [management] team, Mark Webber who works with Oscar, is definitely a great source of thoughts, insight, and identification of opportunities. Advertisement 'So there's quite a lot of work behind this progress but, ultimately, hats off to Oscar that he's been able to capitalise.'
