St Pat's next Euro opponents confirmed as Kenny hails return to goalscoring form

Stephen Kenny has hailed St Patrick's Athletic's return to goalscoring form as Mason Melia and Kian Leavy fired the Inchicore side into the second qualifying round of the Europa Conference League. The Saints completed a comfortable 3-0 aggregate win over Lithuanian side FC Hegelmann, winning 2-0 away from home thanks to goals early in each half by the young attacking pair. They will take on Estonian side Kalju, who saw off Albanian outfit Partizani in extra-time, next week in the first-leg, with that game taking place in Richmond Park. Kenny said: 'We have to get back on track now because obviously that was expensive for us, in terms of league points, 'But tonight is about the European game and that was a tough game for periods but we played and controlled it really well. 'Without doubt the standout performer - the player who caught the eye most was Kian Leavy - his influence on the night and the goal rounded it off for him, his first European goal.' Melia showed his poaching instincts to score from close range and Kenny was also delighted with his performance. 'Every goal doesn't have to be a brilliant finish. There is nothing wrong with finishing in the six yard box, striker's goals. We've been lacking those types of goals,' he said. 'Jason McClelland did brilliant, a good strike that the keeper palmed and he (Melia) was in there to finish it.' Kenny added: 'He was sharp onto it alright. He won't get an easier goal, but it's because he read the situation and he anticipated it, and that's a good side. 'There are more goals like that for him if he continues to react like that. He reacted in a way you want a striker to react and thankfully we got the goal.' The Pat's boss sent in Chris Forrester with 11 minutes remaining, for a little piece of St Pat's history. Forrester's 25th European appearance means he has played more times in continental games than anyone else for the Richmond Park outfit. And the man whose record he took, Ian Bermingham, was in Tirana scouting next week's opponents. 'It's been a milestone week for him,' said Kenny. 'Obviously, his 400th appearance last week, and also his 25th today in Europe, which is a record for St Patrick's Athletic. 'His good friend Ian Bermingham, of course, was in Tirana tonight for us as it happens. 'While he was in Tirana, his record was taken away from him by his good friend, Chris. So it's a great achievement, and hopefully, there's more for him there.' Get the latest sports headlines straight to your inbox by signing up for free email alerts.

Landlord Marc Godart seeks to take over Dublin pub licence

Landlord Marc Godart wants to take over a Dublin pub's licence and has a tenant 'lined up', but needs consent from the city council's fire officer, a court has heard. The Luxembourg businessman, now based in Latvia, brought an application before Judge Máire Conneely at Dublin District Court, which was adjourned for two weeks pending the council official's findings. In past unrelated proceedings at the District Court, companies linked to the businessman have faced multiple legal issues over property lettings in Dublin. In Wednesday's licensing case, he sought a certificate of transfer of the licence for Cleary's Pub, Sarsfield Road, Inchicore. READ MORE Inchicore Parkview Residence Limited made the application, and Mr Godart gave evidence in his capacity as a director. His firm's barrister, Dorothy Collins, asked Judge Conneely to hear the evidence and then to defer ruling on the basis that the fire officer had 'requested that there are certain works to be done' and needed to provide a report. The judge heard that Mr Godart had travelled from abroad and would only be here for a day. Counsel said there had been 'a lot of negotiation with the fire officer who has inspected the premises and required certain works to be done'. She added that paperwork had to be completed and the proceedings ought to be postponed to satisfy the council official. Inchicore Parkview Residence Limited's barrister presented the judge with a booklet of documents, including the previous licensee's certificate, an advertisement published in a national newspaper, a certificate of incorporation, and the deed of transfer. The judge heard that the pub licence had expired last year, but an application could still be made for a late certificate of transfer. In evidence, Mr Godart agreed with Ms Collins that he had been negotiating with the fire officer. He had engaged a consultant to do whatever was necessary to satisfy the official. Asked if he had any experience running a public house, he said he had managed the building for six months. He clarified 'that's correct' when put to him that he did not intend to run the pub, the application was to preserve the licence, and concurred that he had 'a tenant lined up, but they won't take it over unless there is a licence'. Mr Godart said the premises had been vacant since closing at the beginning of this year. Judge Conneely noted from the company's report that he resided in Latvia and that he did not intend to live in the pub itself, which he confirmed while in the witness box. She said the application was in order, subject to the fire officer's consent and report. The case resumes on July 30th.

Jake Mulraney feels goals can flow for profligate Pat's

Jake Mulraney feels the goals will flow for St Patrick's Athletic after a challenging time for the Inchicore club. Stephen Kenny's side have gone from a team tipped by many at the start of the campaign to claim a league title, to one languishing in sixth place and 17 points adrift of table-toppers Shamrock Rovers. With just one goal from open play in six league games, the glaring issue is there for all to see, with the Saints scoring just 27 goals in 25 league games. Last week saw a European distraction when Lithuanian side Hegelmann were defeated 1-0 at Richmond Park. The UEFA Conference League clash was settled with a late penalty as Pat's again struggled to really test the opposition goalkeeper, but winger Jake Mulraney feels confidence remains high within the camp ahead of Thursday's return leg. "Absolutely, I don't see any reason why we shouldn't be confident," Mulraney said when asked if the players felt good about their chances of progress. "There is no point in being negative. With the players we have in the changing room, we have got to have that bit of belief. "I think we have been performing well. We have created chances, just not put the ball in the back of the net. The fact we are playing well, and hurting teams, that keeps the boys' confidence higher than people would probably think." Aidan Keena's 81st-minute penalty was Pats' 20th attempt on the Hegelmann goal on the night, and it ended more than 400 minutes since their last goal, Simon Power's consolation goal in a 3-1 defeat to Galway United last month. Few could have seen such a drought coming, yet Mulraney remains optimistic that that will be rectified over the coming games. "I know what we have in the changing room. The goal drought was very unexpected, even when we weren't as playing as we are now, we were still scoring goals. "We have the firepower in the changing room to turn this around." 'I don't think I'm far off' – @CorkTOD asks @stpatsfc wide player Jake Mulraney how close he is to recapturing last season's form ahead of their European assignment in Lithuania — RTÉ Sport (@RTEsport) July 15, 2025 Back in January the 29-year-old committed his long-term future to the club having arrived ahead of the 2023 campaign after spells in England, Scotland and the USA. The winger had a brilliant season last year, scoring nine goals in 37 appearances – including a brace in a European victory over Vaduz as well as creating a raft of chances for his team-mates. The former Orlando City player, who has yet to score himself this campaign, was asked by RTÉ Sport if he felt his form is getting back to where he wants it to be. "I don't think I was great at the start of the year," he said. "Coming into the European games this year, the past four games I have been feeling better in myself, more attack-minded. "I feel like I have gotten back into my old form in terms of dribbling past people, exciting people. "I just need to add the numbers that I had last year."
