Uran Girl Finds a Place in Team India for International Shooting Show
Navi Mumbai: A talented young shooter from Uran secured a position in India's national shooting contingent for an international competition. Shooting sport encompasses the use of various firearms, including guns, pistols, and airguns, testing accuracy, speed, and targeting skills.
The sport features multiple categories such as rifle, air pistol, rifle 50 metres, shotgun, trap, double trap, and skeet, where competitors target from varying distances. Avani Koli (19), hailing from Dighode village in Uran taluka, qualified for the Indian shooting team for her first international competition.
Coming from a humble background, Avani demonstrated excellence in double trap shotgun events across district, division, state, and national levels.
Her parents challenged rural conventions regarding girls' traditional roles by backing her sporting aspirations. Her development was guided by her father, Alankar Koli, who serves as a national shooter-cum-coach and former deputy sarpanch.
Despite equipment constraints, she accumulated numerous medals in shotgun shooting. Her family, including mother Kavita, who manages home affairs, and brother Arnav, an inter-school competition achiever, provides unwavering support.

She studied at Indian Model School and Junior College, Ulwe, and currently pursues BSc first year at Veer Wajekar College, Funde, Uran.

Her shooting journey began at age 12 at Siddhant Rifle and Pistol Shooting Club, Raigad, under Kishan Kharke and Commonwealth Games medallist Sheela Kanungo. As Uran's pioneering shooter, she competed successfully at various levels, showing resilience through injuries. "I worked very hard to achieve this position.
Donning the tri-colour on the international stage will certainly boost my morale to perform even better," said Avani.
"In 2023, under Ralston Coylo's guidance at Chhatrapati Stadium, Balewadi, Pune, she excelled in double trap shooting. In 2024-25, she secured two national gold medals representing Maharashtra," said her father. Her selection for the Asian Shooting Championship 2025 in Kazakhstan from August 14 to August 28, 2025, establishes her as Raigad and Navi Mumbai's first representative in the Double Trap Shotgun Junior Women's category, earning widespread acclaim.
