The Rosman-gravity pulling Pearly-Thinaah
KUALA LUMPUR: Rosman Razak appears to be the compass that will decide the direction of national women's doubles Pearly Tan-M. Thinaah. That is how former international Datuk Rashid Sidek sees it. Pearly-Thinaah could leave BAM and turn professional if they don't sign a contract extension with the national body. Rosman is Pearly-Thinaah's coach, and as long as he is with them, the world No 3 pair will follow him. So if national women's doubles coach Rosman remains with BAM, they are expected to continue staying there too. Rashid feels that since Pearly-Thinaah have shown much improvement under Rosman, it's unlikely they pack up and leave their coach to turn professional. Rosman, who formed the Pearly-Thinaah combination in 2019, made a return to BAM last November, and this led to Pearly-Thinaah rising to world No. 3, winning the Thailand Open last month and finishing runners-up at the Indonesia Masters and Indonesia Open. The duo will meet with BAM president Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz tomorrow in a move to resolve their contract impasse. "Rosman is an integral part of Pearly-Thinaah's progress. They will definitely remain with BAM for as long as he is there," said Rashid. "They have been showing good progress and I don't think Pearly and Thinaah will want to leave the ideal facilities offered by BAM. "Furthermore, Rosman has pledged to stay until 2028, and Pearly-Thinaah need his guidance if they want to push for a medal at the Los Angeles Olympics." Rashid also feels that Pearly-Thinaah's presence is needed at BAM to help improve the other pairs in the national team. "Pearly-Thinaah have set the benchmark and are an inspiration to the rest of the women's doubles squad. The younger pairs need a world-class combination to look up to. "Of course, the lure from outside is also strong, but can Pearly-Thinaah get certain perks like business class flights provided by BAM if they become independent pairs?

Indonesia Open: Pearly-Thinaah miss out on title after going down to world number one pair
A major title continued to elude the country's top women's doubles pair, Pearly Tan-M. Thinaah, as their maiden Super 1000 title hopes were dashed after falling to world number one pair, Liu Sheng Shu-Tan Ning from China, during the Indonesia Open 2025 final at Istora Senayan here, today. In a fierce 87-minute match, the world number four seeded pair lost 25-23, 12-21, 19-21 in the tournament after putting up a strong fight, including winning the first set. The unseeded pair managed to bounce back from an 8-14 deficit in the opening set to secure a 25-23 victory, but the opponents' dominance in the subsequent two sets saw Pearly-Thinaah fail to maintain their momentum. Currently ranked fourth in the world by the Badminton World Federation (BWF), Pearly-Thinaah tried to recover from deficits multiple times, but the Chinese pair managed to maintain their advantage until the end. After the match, Pearly explained that there was still much to learn and improve to enhance their performance, especially their 'mindset,' despite playing with high spirits. 'We were actually in a good position, we should have been able to finish the match with an advantage. But towards the end, maybe we lost a little focus. 'Actually, from the beginning of the game we already felt tired, but we reminded each other to keep fighting, because this was the last match. We just wanted to give everything we had on the court,' Pearly added. Meanwhile, Thinaah said they would use the time this month to fully rest and recover their energy as there are no major tournaments coming up soon. This defeat sees Pearly-Thinaah once again become runners-up in Jakarta, after also reaching the final of the Indonesia Masters earlier this year. However, their consistent performance strengthens their reputation as one of the main contenders in the women's doubles event at the world level.

Wei Chong-Kai Wun no longer inconsistent
KUALA LUMPUR: Men's doubles Man Wei Chong-Tee Kai Wun seem to have weeded out the inconsistency in their game with a string of world class performances this year. Wei Chong-Kai Wun have now become more lethal, thanks to better workrate and mental toughness The world No. 7 won the Indonesia Masters in January, but lost in the first or second rounds in the next four tournaments. However, Herry's tactical changes started bearing fruit at the Malaysia Masters where they stunned their illustrious compatriots Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik in the final three weeks ago. Last week, Wei Chong-Kai Wun were unlucky to lose to eventual champions Aaron-Wooi Yik in the Singapore Open quarter-finals. As long as the match is not over, we will keep trying and trying. That's the mindset," said Kai Wun. Notably, Wei Chong-Kai Wun have made significant breakthroughs this season with their rousing victories over current world No. 1 Goh Sze fei-Nur Izzuddin Rumsani, Japan's 2021 world champions Takuro Hoki-Yugo Kobayashi and India's 2023 Asian Games champions Satwiksairaj Rankireddy-Chirag Shetty in the World Tour this season. Herry said: "Wei Chong-Kai Wun have shown progress as they are more relaxed and playing better. Although they were tired, they never gave up. They must build on their consistency." The main events (Super 500 and beyond) on the World Tour will take a month-long break before Wei Chong-Kai Wun return at the Japan Open (July 15-20) with more weapons.
