Wei Chong-Kai Wun no longer inconsistent

KUALA LUMPUR: Men's doubles Man Wei Chong-Tee Kai Wun seem to have weeded out the inconsistency in their game with a string of world class performances this year.
Inconsistency used to be the root of their problem until new national men's doubles chief coach Herry IP came in with his changes.
Wei Chong-Kai Wun have now become more lethal, thanks to better workrate and mental toughness
The world No. 7 won the Indonesia Masters in January, but lost in the first or second rounds in the next four tournaments.
However, Herry's tactical changes started bearing fruit at the Malaysia Masters where they stunned their illustrious compatriots Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik in the final three weeks ago.
Last week, Wei Chong-Kai Wun were unlucky to lose to eventual champions Aaron-Wooi Yik in the Singapore Open quarter-finals. However they did well to reach the semi-finals of the Indonesia Open yesterday where they were edged 21-18, 12-21, 21-18.by homesters Sabar Karyaman-Moh Reza Isfahani.
"We are happy with our improvement in mental strength and momentum. Now, every pair can beat each other and the battle goes on until the end. As long as the match is not over, we will keep trying and trying. That's the mindset," said Kai Wun.
Notably, Wei Chong-Kai Wun have made significant breakthroughs this season with their rousing victories over current world No. 1 Goh Sze fei-Nur Izzuddin Rumsani, Japan's 2021 world champions Takuro Hoki-Yugo Kobayashi and India's 2023 Asian Games champions Satwiksairaj Rankireddy-Chirag Shetty in the World Tour this season.
Herry said: "Wei Chong-Kai Wun have shown progress as they are more relaxed and playing better. Although they were tired, they never gave up. They must build on their consistency."
The main events (Super 500 and beyond) on the World Tour will take a month-long break before Wei Chong-Kai Wun return at the Japan Open (July 15-20) with more weapons.

Herry says shuttlers are recharged after Genting break

KUALA LUMPUR: Herry IP believes in tough training but the Indonesian coaching legend doesn't mind letting his players take a short break. ith the hectic second half of the World Tour about to start in a fortnight, Herry said that the one-day getaway to Genting Highlands on Friday had rejuvenated the entire team. World No. 2 Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik and world No. 7 Man Wei Chong-Tee Kai Wun gave the team a treat following their success in winning three World Tour titles recently. "The short break away from the city is a good way to relax and rejuvenate," said Herry who also went to Genting with his assistant Muhhamad Miftakh. "Just a dinner and the seniors were motivating the younger pairs. It was good to see them appreciating each other. Such breaks once in a while make them fresh and it also brings them closer. "The players will now be focused on their preparation before competing at the Japan (July 15-20) and China (July 22-27) Opens," said Herry.

The Rosman-gravity pulling Pearly-Thinaah

KUALA LUMPUR: Rosman Razak appears to be the compass that will decide the direction of national women's doubles Pearly Tan-M. Thinaah. That is how former international Datuk Rashid Sidek sees it. Pearly-Thinaah could leave BAM and turn professional if they don't sign a contract extension with the national body. Rosman is Pearly-Thinaah's coach, and as long as he is with them, the world No 3 pair will follow him. So if national women's doubles coach Rosman remains with BAM, they are expected to continue staying there too. Rashid feels that since Pearly-Thinaah have shown much improvement under Rosman, it's unlikely they pack up and leave their coach to turn professional. Rosman, who formed the Pearly-Thinaah combination in 2019, made a return to BAM last November, and this led to Pearly-Thinaah rising to world No. 3, winning the Thailand Open last month and finishing runners-up at the Indonesia Masters and Indonesia Open. The duo will meet with BAM president Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz tomorrow in a move to resolve their contract impasse. "Rosman is an integral part of Pearly-Thinaah's progress. They will definitely remain with BAM for as long as he is there," said Rashid. "They have been showing good progress and I don't think Pearly and Thinaah will want to leave the ideal facilities offered by BAM. "Furthermore, Rosman has pledged to stay until 2028, and Pearly-Thinaah need his guidance if they want to push for a medal at the Los Angeles Olympics." Rashid also feels that Pearly-Thinaah's presence is needed at BAM to help improve the other pairs in the national team. "Pearly-Thinaah have set the benchmark and are an inspiration to the rest of the women's doubles squad. The younger pairs need a world-class combination to look up to. "Of course, the lure from outside is also strong, but can Pearly-Thinaah get certain perks like business class flights provided by BAM if they become independent pairs?

Coach happy with Tang Jie-Ee Wei's smashing relationship

KUALA LUMPUR: Chen Tang Jie and Toh Ee Wei look chatty and cheery in training — a far cry from the sulky break-up pair of a few months ago. For national mixed doubles head coach Nova Widianto, this means the world No. 4 pair have buried the hatchet, and he can work on getting them ready for the next level. Personal differences led to Tang Jie-Ee Wei going separate ways after their first round loss at the All England in March. But after a brief split, they resumed their partnership at the Singapore Open last month. Nova said the biggest change in the duo's partnership since the turbulent period is their willingness to accept defeat. "There are now no problems at all between Tang Jie and Ee Wei. They are both happy and enjoy training, and their communication has been very good. "The biggest lesson Tang Jie-Ee Wei have learnt is to accept defeat as this was an issue they faced sometimes previously. It's all in the past. "Now I can focus on building their performance and skills to realise their true potential. "I have to keep motivating Tang Jie-Ee Wei and give them the confidence to move up to the next level." Nova said their "past issues" should not be an excuse anymore, and Tang Jie-Ee Wei need to fight for World Tour titles, which they haven't won any this year. Tang Jie-Ee Wei lost in the second round of the Singapore Open last month but reached the semi-finals of the Indonesia Open four weeks ago. The duo will compete in the Japan Open (July 15-20) and China Open (July 22-27). Tang Jie-Ee Wei are also seeded top in the Macau Open (July 29-Aug 3).
