Mayor receives corpn zonal chiefs' resignations

Madurai: Two days after chief minister M K Stalin reportedly directed them to step down, the resignations of five zonal chairpersons of Madurai corporation and two standing committee chairmen were officially received by mayor Indrani Ponvasanth on Wednesday. The five zonal chairpersons were Madurai East's Vasuki Sasikumar, Madurai North's Saravana Bhuvaneshwari, Madurai Central's Pandi Selvi, Madurai South's Mugesh Sharma, and Madurai West's V Suvitha, while the two standing committee chairpersons were K Vijayalakshmi and J Moovendran. The resignations come in the wake of allegations of largescale irregularities in property tax assessments. A subsequent inquiry was conducted by the police following a complaint given earlier by former corporation commissioner Dinesh Kumar. A senior party functionary confirmed receipt of the resignation letters but did not provide further details on whether new chairpersons will be elected (in indirect elections) immediately. The functionary said many councillors are already meeting DMK ministers to secure the vacant posts of zonal chairpersons. According to party sources, the five chairpersons submitted their resignation letters to the party high command on Monday, soon after a high-level meeting with senior DMK ministers including K N Nehru, P Moorthy, and Palanivel Thiaga Rajan. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Giá vàng đang tăng mạnh trong năm 2025 — Các nhà giao dịch thông minh đã tham gia IC Markets Tìm hiểu thêm Undo The move came amid mounting public pressure and internal party concerns over alleged manipulation of property records in the Urban Tree Information System (UTIS) involving temporary staff, zonal chairpersons, and councillors. Meanwhile, the Central Crime Branch (CCB) has intensified its probe into the property tax scam that allegedly resulted in significant loss to the civic body. Police sources revealed that fresh summons have been issued to more councillors for questioning. Police suspect that the accused staff, in collusion with a few councillors and chairpersons, altered tax details — including built-up area and property usage — in exchange for bribes. While some councillors have claimed they are being unfairly targeted, party functionaries maintain that disciplinary action was taken against all chairpersons, irrespective of their affiliation to both the ministers in Madurai.

Wellness centres inaugurated in Madurai

1 2 Madurai: Chief minister M K Stalin on Thursday inaugurated 208 urban health and wellness centres (UHWC) and 50 primary health centres (PHC) across the state through video conferencing from the Secretariat. These new facilities were established at a total cost of 112 crore — 52 crore for UHWCs and 60 crore for PHCs. Of these, 18 facilities were opened within Madurai city limits. One of the newly inaugurated centres in the city is located at ward 50, Thaikkal Street, where Madurai mayor Indrani Ponvasanth participated in the local launch event. The centres are being set up under the National Urban Health Mission to improve access to primary healthcare services in densely populated areas. Each centre will provide preventive and curative services such as screening for non-communicable diseases, maternal and child health services, vaccinations, and general outpatient care. Officials from the Madurai corporation said these centres will help reduce the burden on tertiary hospitals by addressing health issues at the community level. The CM said the initiative is part of the state's broader goal to make quality healthcare accessible and equitable for all.
