2
Madurai: Chief minister M K Stalin on Thursday inaugurated 208 urban health and wellness centres (UHWC) and 50 primary health centres (PHC) across the state through video conferencing from the Secretariat.
These new facilities were established at a total cost of 112 crore — 52 crore for UHWCs and 60 crore for PHCs.
Of these, 18 facilities were opened within Madurai city limits. One of the newly inaugurated centres in the city is located at ward 50, Thaikkal Street, where Madurai mayor Indrani Ponvasanth participated in the local launch event.
The centres are being set up under the National Urban Health Mission to improve access to primary healthcare services in densely populated areas.
Each centre will provide preventive and curative services such as screening for non-communicable diseases, maternal and child health services, vaccinations, and general outpatient care.
Officials from the Madurai corporation said these centres will help reduce the burden on tertiary hospitals by addressing health issues at the community level. The CM said the initiative is part of the state's broader goal to make quality healthcare accessible and equitable for all.

10-day-old girl branded with hot sickle to ‘cure' bloated stomach, 60-year-old relative arrested
Amravati: A 10-day-old girl was allegedly branded on the belly with a hot sickle in Dahendri village of Amravati's Chikhaldara tehsil as a "cure" for a bloated stomach and running nose, police said. The incident came to light thanks to an alert nurse of the local public health centre (PHC) who also shifted the ailing baby to a sub-district hospital. The mother filed a complaint against her 60-year-old aunt, Manju Kasdekar, who allegedly branded the baby. The cops registered an offence under section 118(1) of BNS and section 3(2) of Maharashtra Anti-Black Magic Act and arrested Kasdekar. According to police, the 25-year-old complainant woman gave birth to a girl at Chikhaldara PHC on June 15. After eight days, the infant developed some health issues. A nurse from the local PHC went to the woman's home and treated the baby. On June 25, Kasdekar visited the mother and said that the baby needs treatment for a bloated belly. She suggested performing 'Damma', a superstitious practice prevalent in tribal Melghat region. Later, Kasdekar heated a sickle and branded the baby's belly. "The baby will now be okay," she told the mother. The nurse re-visited the family on July 4 to check on the health of the mother and the baby. Noticing the burn injuries, the nurse took the baby to Dahendri PHC, and later shifted her to the sub-district hospital in Achalpur. The baby's health improved after two days of treatment, and she was discharged on July 5.
