'A tragedy for the jazz community': Legendary SA trumpeter Feya Faku dies on tour in Switzerland

Tributes are pouring in for Feya Faku after the legendary South African jazz musician died on Monday while on tour in Switzerland. The trumpeter and flugelhornist was just 63 years old. Born in the Eastern Cape, Faku had built up an international reputation. He is being remembered as the 'gentle giant' of African jazz. A statement from the Faku family confirmed the musician's death, saying he had 'peacefully passed away in his sleep' in the Swiss city, Basel. Jazz show host Nothemba Madumo recalls the fond memories she has of the last time she saw Faku, which was two months ago in April at the International Jazz Day celebration hosted by 702.

The Grammy-nominated artiste became one of the few Indian artistes to perform at this event, sharing the stage with some of the biggest legends in jazz 2025 edition featured a notable lineup of jazz artists, including John McLaughlin, Arturo Sandoval, Kenny Barron, Marcus Miller, Dee Dee Bridgewater, and Herbie joined these musicians for the celebration of jazz as a unifying art her performance, Varijashree presented her interpretation of John Coltrane's Giant Steps, incorporating Indian Sargam. This blend of jazz harmony and Indian classical vocal techniques showcased her unique musical approach. She also contributed to the finale, performing a Kannada verse in Herbie Hancock's rendition of John Lennon's on the experience, Varijashree said, "Performing at International Jazz Day Abu Dhabi 2025 was a great honour. Sharing the stage with such talented musicians and presenting a bit of India's musical sound was a wonderful experience. It highlights how music can connect different cultures." Varijashree Venugopal, known for her Carnatic roots and innovative fusion of Indian and global music, has gained international recognition as a singer, flautist, and composer.

50 Egyptian Jazz Artists Unite for an Unforgettable Celebration of International Jazz Day on May 6

Egyptian Jazz Artists. 50 of Egypt's top jazz musicians will come together on Tuesday, May 6 at Teatro Arkan to celebrate International Jazz Day in a one-of-a-kind interactive concert. The star-studded lineup features Grammy-winning composer Fathy Salama, acclaimed vocalists Noha Fekry and Rana Hagag, Australian jazz singer Michelle Rounds, and pianist Amro Salah, founder of the Cairo International Jazz Festival. Joining them on stage are some of the biggest names in Egyptian jazz, including Samer George, Sherif Mostafa, Kareem Hossam, Shady El Qaseer, André Segone, Fesal Fouad, Rashad Fahim, and Ayman Sedky. The night will also be graced by a special appearance from renowned Sudanese artist Tarek El Hawy.
