Zohran Mamdani Has Probably Had More Success on Hinge Than You

The current political landscape is filled with candidates who tirelessly attempt to brand themselves as 'of the people.' But I think there are some mundane human experience prerequisites you should meet before you get to flaunt that title. Have you ever been hit with an overdraft fee? Or stepped inside a public laundromat? By my judgment, New York City mayoral candidate Zohran Mandani has ticked at least one box in the "incredibly normal background" category. He and his wife, Brooklyn-based artist Rama Duwaji, met on Hinge. The New York State assemblyman shared this fun fact on The Bulwark podcast last week to support his take that 'there is still hope in those dating apps.' And while you might hesitate to buy into his argument, I find this lore charming. There's been plenty of noise about Zohran's age and very online campaign approach. (Should he win, at 33 years old, he'd be the youngest NYC mayor in a century. And on his campaign, he's ventured to press stops that very few of his elder opponents have, from Hasan Piker's Twitch stream to Subway Takes.) But above all else, what's more millennial than meeting your life partner on an app? Zohran's big Hinge reveal indicates that one of the top contenders for NYC mayor has probably spent 20 minutes (at least) picking out his six most flattering photos and identifying his main dealbreakers. It also means that Zohran's familiar with the draining experience of trudging through 'how was your Tuesday' exchanges. Which, now that I think of it, probably doesn't differ much from the campaigning experience. If anything, swiping primed him for politics. Since their first app-assisted meet-cute, Zohran and Rama, 27, have shared quite a love story. They got married earlier this year in a civil ceremony at the New York City clerk's office, a day he described adorably to Interview Magazine. 'The outside is just so beautiful and reminiscent of a different New York City, and the inside is in many ways public goods personified. All of these New Yorkers getting married at the same time at different ages and at different times in their lives, it's very beautiful.' But because the world is sick and appreciation for real #lovers is at an all-time low (by my observation), Zohran and Rama's relationship caught some flak earlier in his campaign. Online skeptics (ones who don't seem to understand the instinct to protect the people you cherish) came for Zohran, claiming he was 'hiding' Rama from the world…instead of exploiting their relationship for political gain, I guess. But the mayoral candidate posted a stern defense on IG, with his vibey black and white wedding photoshoot in tow! 'Three months ago, I married the love of my life, Rama, at the City Clerk's office. Now, right-wing trolls are trying to make this race—which should be about you—about her,' he wrote in the caption. 'Rama isn't just my wife, she's an incredible artist who deserves to be known on her own terms. You can critique my views, but not my family.' Allow Zohran and Rama to be all the motivation you need to keep swiping. I also have follow-up questions for them. Was Zohran honest about his height on his profile? How much would I judge his opening line to Rama? Who chose their first date spot? For these answers, we may have to wait until Zohran pens his autobiography or hosts a Rama-themed Instagram Q&A, whichever comes first. But it's amazing that he could become the first New York City mayor to know what the Rose feature is. We are truly living through history.

SZA Shares Behind-the-Scenes Footage of a New ‘Guest Star' Collaboration With Lizzo

SZA might be extraordinarily busy as she prepares to head overseas with her and Kendrick Lamar's Grand National Tour — but that didn't stop her from swooping in for a quick recording session with her friend Lizzo. In a series of posts to her Instagram Stories early Friday (June 20), SZA teased fans with a forthcoming collaboration between her and the 'Juice' singer. What started as a glimpse of Lizzo's own new music in the video, the 'Luther' singer started sharing clips of her voice playing alongside Lizzo's in the background. 'Working on a guest star for bookie @lizzobeeating's new mixtape,' SZA wrote in one caption, while calling their link-up a 'lil after-dinner session' in another. While it's unclear whether Love in Real Life is the 'mixtape' SZA referred to in her post, the album has yet to receive an official release date. Earlier this week, SZA opened up to Chappell Roan about her friendship with Lizzo during a conversation for Interview Magazine. Speaking about the first time she and the 'About Damn Time' singer met, SZA praised the 'organic and very random' connection they immediately shared. 'One day, we were on the same tour, and I was like, 'We're about to drive out to Lake Michigan, do you want to come?' And she was like, 'Yeah, let's go,'' SZA recalled. 'And then we just got drunk and hung out, and we kept doing that, and then our lives and careers progressed, and we kept talking and hanging out.' The new song wouldn't be the first time the pair have worked together, either. Back in 2023, SZA appeared on a revamped version of Lizzo's 2022 hit 'Special.' In May, Lizzo even crashed the stage during SZA and Lamar's tour stop in Los Angeles to perform the track with her on stage. The news comes after SZA and her co-headliner Lamar wrap the first leg of their 2025 Grand National Tour. Starting in July, the pair will begin performances across Europe — including shows in Paris, London, Barcelona and Rome — and close out their headline-making run with a set of shows in Australia this December. Chappell Roan reveals how she really feels about 'hateful' backlash

Chappell Roan reveals how she really feels about 'hateful' backlash The Hot To Go hitmaker - whose real name is Kayleigh Rose Amstutz - has admitted while she never used to "give a f***" about criticism, that's changed since it appeared to be directed at her real self Chappell Roan (Image: PA ) Chappell Roan has admitted the backlash she faces has started to feel personal. The Hot To Go hitmaker - whose real name is Kayleigh Rose Amstutz - has admitted while she never used to "give a f***" about criticism, that's changed since it appeared to be directed at her real self. ‌ In a conversation for Interview Magazine, SZA asked Chappell if she "gave a f*** about the backlash". ‌ She admitted: "I didn't, until people started hating me for me and not for my art. "When it's not about my art anymore, it's like, 'They hate me because I'm Kayleigh, not because they hate the songs that I make. That's when it changed." The Pink Pony Club pop star pointed out that fans only know her public persona rather than her true self, but it's still a struggle. Article continues below She added: "They don't [know Kayleigh]. But when things are taken out of context, people assume so much about you. "I didn't realise I'd care so much. When it comes to my art, I'm like, 'B****, you can think whatever you want. You are allowed to hate it with all your guts.' "But when it comes to me and my personality, it's like, 'Damn. Am I the most insufferable b**** of our generation?' [Laughs]" ‌ Chappell admitted sometimes the trolls can bring her to tears. She said: "And it makes me cry. I don't know if it will ever feel okay to hear someone say something really hateful about me." Fellow musician SZA agreed, noting she's even been worried she's "cut not out" for life in the public eye. ‌ She revealed: "That's so real! Oh my god. I feel deeply relieved by what you just said because I felt like I was a punk b**** for feeling the way that I feel, because I'm just like, 'Oh, maybe I'm just not cut out for this shit.' "Because everybody else who's cut out for this shit doesn't give a f***. But that's not true." SZA pointed out how she has been "misperceived" after interactions with fans that are actually "tiny vacuums of the most intense moments", with dozens of people meeting her "in the worst emotional estate" and then making assumptions about her true self. Article continues below She explained: "They're all going to take this with them and be like, 'Yep, that's who the f*** she is. And we're going to tell other people that this is who she is, also.' "But it has no reflection on who I really am. You don't get another time to make a second impression. "People just take that s*** and go and build your identity. And it's excruciating, and it's hurtful, and it is devastating. And I do be crying. And I needed you to say that."

Chappell Roan reflects on backlash after Outside Lands debut: ‘It makes me cry'

It's been nearly a year since Chappell Roan scolded Outside Lands festivalgoers in the VIP section for thinking they're 'way too cool' to dance during her set at Golden Gate Park. Now the singer is sharing how the subsequent backlash took an emotional toll. 'I didn't realize I'd care so much,' Roan said in conversation with R&B singer SZA for Interview Magazine published Tuesday, June 17. 'When it comes to my art, I'm like, 'Bitch, you can think whatever you want. You are allowed to hate it with all your guts.' But when it comes to me and my personality, it's like, 'Damn. Am I the most insufferable bitch of our generation?'' The 'Pink Pony Club' singer experienced a meteoric rise to fame last summer following the release of her debut album, 'The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess.' It led to her highly-anticipated main stage Outside Lands festival debut, which attracted a reported 50,000 for her afternoon set. But a clip of Roan calling out fans in the VIP section of Outside Lands for not joining in on the choreographed 'Hot To Go!' dance — a 'YMCA'-style routine she taught mid-set — went viral last August, fueling criticism of her personality. While she said she has been able to brush off musical critiques, she admitted that the more personal criticisms have been harder to cope with. Roan — whose real name is Kayleigh Amstutz — quickly made headlines for being outspoken, whether snapping at disrespectful fans and photographers or standing up for LGBTQ+ rights. She responded by sharing several social media videos airing her grievances with sudden fame, explaining that she felt 'unsafe' and wanted to 'set boundaries' with fans. But some interpreted her remarks as the singer being ungrateful. 'When it's not about my art anymore, it's like, 'They hate me because I'm Kayleigh, not because they hate the songs that I make,'' she told SZA. 'I give a f— and it makes me cry. I don't know if it will ever feel okay to hear someone say something really hateful about me.' Though she spent some time out of the public eye after winning her first Grammy Award at the start of the year, Roan is working on her sophomore album and has returned to the festival circuit. During recent appearances, she has even reportedly performed her new country-tinged song, 'The Giver.' Her next festival set is scheduled for Aug. 6 in Oslo, Norway at Øyafestivalen.

New Lois Lane Rachel Brosnahan slams actors for complaining about superhero movies after Dakota Johnson's snide remarks

Rachel Brosnahan is fighting for the superhero genre. Brosnahan, 34, replied, 'I don't know why people say yes only to then turn around and complain about it. Look, I don't want to sh-t on other actors, but there was a minute where it was cool to not like superhero movies and to look back on projects like this and pooh-pooh them.' 11 Rachel Brosnahan for Interview Magazine. Of course, there's great fighting and stunts and big monsters and good and evil.'
