French court overturns town's burkini ban after woman threatened with fines
LONDON: The Marseilles administrative court has reversed a burkini ban on a French Riviera beach after police threatened fines against a teenager and her family for wearing the Muslim swimsuit, The Times reported on Thursday. The seaside town of Carry-le-Rouet had implemented the ban in June 2024, but it was found by the court to be a 'serious and illegal breach of fundamental freedoms' following the incident. The ban was largely irrelevant until July 2, when an 18-year-old Muslim woman from the city of Marseille went to the town's beach. Two municipal officers spotted her in the sea and ordered her out using whistles. Her family asked what she had done wrong, and the officers said the woman's garment was 'not acceptable,' according to her brother Islan. The police called for reinforcements. Five gendarmes who arrived later threatened the 18-year-old with fines unless she and her family left the beach. Islan said the family then left the area. 'My sister has taken it badly,' he added. 'She is afraid to go out now, does not communicate with other people and avoids talking about what happened.' The incident led to the Human Rights League seeking a court order overturning the town's burkini ban. Over the past decade, about 20 towns and cities on the French coast, including Cannes, have tried to ban the Muslim swimsuit on secular grounds, though almost all the bans were denied or later overturned. In 2004, France banned Muslim headscarves in schools after MPs decided that the garment violates the secular values of the state education system. Niqabs and burqas were outlawed in public in 2011 based on concerns that criminals could conceal their identities using the religious garbs.

France : Expelled from a beach for her burkini, a young woman gives up swimming

Although they were never shown the ordinance in question, the family was forced to leave the beach under threat of a fine. Another woman wearing a burkini was also asked to leave. The municipal ordinance bans full-body swimwear, citing maritime safety concerns. However, such bans have previously been ruled unlawful by the French Council of State. In July 2023, the Council suspended a similar measure in Mandelieu-la-Napoule, declaring it a «serious and illegal» infringement on several fundamental freedoms. Marion Ogier, a lawyer and member of the National Committee of the Human Rights League, condemned these repeated restrictions. «The Council of State's rulings are extremely clear, and yet, every year, we see mayors banning the burkini for completely illegal reasons», she said. Since the incident, the young woman has been deeply shaken. «She no longer dares to go out or talk to people… She doesn't even want to swim anymore», her brother said.

Bosses have promised that there will be more sex this year - and more drama, with bosses promising some big scenes ahead. The show's executive producer Mike Spencer-Hayter recently spoke to The Mirror about what fans can expect from the new series. Mike said: "If sex happens, we'll show it. The Hideaway will be open 24 hours. We need to keep the show fresh and exciting. After 10 years, the stats speak for themselves. The show will continue to thrive. "We the producers need to stay ahead of the curve. The whole 'twists and turns' thing is about making the show fresh. We're going to give it all we've got." The show has already got off to an exciting start, with one Islander already dumped from the villa - before the show has even aired. Follow the latest build-up and updates below Don't worry, we're not talking about any members of Destiny's Chaldish... they won't be back either! But now things could get even more awkward, with the addition of a big dining table. The show is also hoping that they can promote healthy eating habits to viewers with their new set up!
