An 18-year-old woman was forced to leave the beach at Carry-le-Rouet, near Marseille, after attempting to swim in a burkini. On July 2, municipal police officers, accompanied by gendarmes, prevented her from entering the sea, citing a local ordinance.
«We arrive, my sister is about to swim, and two municipal police officers blow their whistle and tell her she can't go in», her twin brother, Islan, told France 3 Régions. «We ask why, and they say she's not allowed to dress like that, that her clothing is unacceptable». Although they were never shown the ordinance in question, the family was forced to leave the beach under threat of a fine. Another woman wearing a burkini was also asked to leave.
The municipal ordinance bans full-body swimwear, citing maritime safety concerns. However, such bans have previously been ruled unlawful by the French Council of State. In July 2023, the Council suspended a similar measure in Mandelieu-la-Napoule, declaring it a «serious and illegal» infringement on several fundamental freedoms.
Marion Ogier, a lawyer and member of the National Committee of the Human Rights League, condemned these repeated restrictions. «The Council of State's rulings are extremely clear, and yet, every year, we see mayors banning the burkini for completely illegal reasons», she said.
Since the incident, the young woman has been deeply shaken. «She no longer dares to go out or talk to people… She doesn't even want to swim anymore», her brother said.

Emmanuel Macron seeks tougher measures against alleged «Islamist infiltration»

Emmanuel Macron has vowed to intensify the government's response to what he describes as «Islamist infiltration». During a Defense Council meeting held on Monday, July 7, the French president approved a series of measures targeting associations suspected of promoting Islamist ideology through actions that are legally permissible but considered contrary to republican values, according to Le Monde. Among the new measures, Macron announced plans to extend asset freezes, previously limited to terrorism-related cases, to certain civil society organizations. Additional steps include stricter oversight of donations, penalties for violating the republican values contract, and the confiscation of assets from dissolved groups. The objective, according to the Élysée: to «dissolve more, and dissolve faster». This crackdown follows the submission of a confidential report on the Muslim Brotherhood to the Élysée in May, which described a strategy of «gaining influence from the ground up». Reportedly unsatisfied with his government's initial proposals, Macron has pushed for more «ambitious» actions. «It's a quietly spreading Islamism that's seeking to infiltrate sports, cultural, social, and other associations», said Interior Minister Bruno Retailleau, who has been accused of leaking the report to steer the public debate. However, ambiguity remains over the criteria for targeting these associations. «The infiltration operates within the boundaries of legality», a senior official told Le Monde. If implemented, the proposed measures are expected to spark intense debate in an already deeply polarized National Assembly.

Morocco Reelected Member of FAO Council in Rome

Morocco was re-elected on Friday in Rome as a member of the Council of the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) for a new term covering the period from July 1, 2026, until the end of the 46th session of the FAO Conference, scheduled for 2029. This re-election, represented by the Ambassador and Permanent Representative of the Kingdom to the UN agencies in Rome, Youssef Balla, took place during the 44th session of the FAO Conference, held in Rome from June 28 to July 4. Morocco has been one of the 12 countries representing the Africa region on the Council since June 30, 2023. The Kingdom was initially set to complete its current term on the Council on June 30, 2026. However, the renewed confidence of African member states earned it a new term, reflecting their recognition of Morocco's ongoing commitment to food security, sustainable agricultural development, and South-South cooperation across the African continent. Composed of 49 members, the Council is the executive body of the FAO Conference, responsible for ensuring the implementation of the Organization's activities between its plenary sessions.
