36 Bangladeshis involved in allegedly setting up ISIL-inspired terror module nabbed in Malaysia

The statement added, 'Another 15 individuals have been issued deportation orders while 16 individuals are being further investigated regarding their involvement in this militant movement.' 'The planned security operation which began on 24 April 2025 was carried out in three phases of arrests around Selangor and Johor. In the operation, five of them were identified as being involved under Chapter VIA of the Penal Code (offences relating to terrorism) and have already been charged in the Shah Alam and Johor Bahru Section Courts,' Malaysia's Home Minister Saifuddin Nasution Ismail said in a statement. New Delhi: Malaysian authorities Friday announced the arrests of 36 Bangladeshi citizens this week after they were 'identified' as being involved in a 'radical militant movement' based on extremist beliefs and 'terrorist ideology'. The group of individuals brought to Malaysia 'extremist' beliefs centred on the teachings of the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL), and created recruitment cells within the community for the purposes of 'indoctrinating radical ideas, raising funds for terrorist activities and to overthrow the legitimate government in their home country'. 'I would like to emphasise that Malaysia will not be a haven, let alone a subversive elemental battlefield for any foreign extremist movement,' Ismail declared in his statement. The Malaysian home minister added the country will 'not tolerate' any elements that threaten national security. Since the fall of the Sheikh Hasina-led government last August in Bangladesh, the South Asian nation has seen an upsurge in extremist movements. Earlier this year, banned extremist group Hizb ut-Tahrir (HuT) took out a rally called March for Khilafat in Dhaka, calling for the establishment of an Islamic caliphate. The rally witnessed violence. The group was banned by the Hasina government in 2009. In October 2024, reports emerged from Bangladesh of elite Catholic missionary schools in Dhaka carrying out processions in favour of the establishment of a caliphate in the country. The growth of extremist ideology in Bangladesh has worried India, with the Ministry of External Affairs consistently calling on the interim government led by Chief Advisor Muhammad Yunus to 'protect Hindus, their properties and religious institutions'. The latest India statement on the matter came Thursday after reports emerged of the destruction of a Durga temple in Dhaka. There have been other incidents since the fall of Hasina government that have impacted the minorities in Bangladesh. The Malaysian home minister added, 'Any attempt to turn Malaysia into a base of militant operations or transit centre for extremist movements will be dealt with firm, swift and effective action.' At the same time as concerns heighten over the growth of extremist elements in Bangladesh, the interim government has sought to positively reset ties with Pakistan. Most recently, a trilateral meeting between officials from Dhaka, Islamabad and Beijing was held in the Chinese city of Kunming. Malaysia cracks down against ISIS by detaining 36 Bangladeshi nationals

In a major crackdown against international terrorism Malaysia has detained 36 Bangladeshi nationals on allegations of having ties to Islamic State, the country's Home Minister announced in a statement on Friday. Malaysian Home Minister Saifuddin Nasution Ismail said the Bangladeshis were detained during three raids conducted since 24 April in the country's Selangor and Johor states. Ismail claimed that the detainees set up a terrorist recruitment cell to spread the extremist ideologies inspired by the Islamic State within the Bangladeshi diaspora, collect terror funds, and oust the Bangladesh government. Malaysia would not promote terrorism and extremist movements targeted at foreign lands from its territory, nor would it tolerate threats to its national security, the Home Minister said. 'The Special Branch team's intelligence and coordinated action revealed that this group brought in extremist beliefs based on the Islamic State (IS) ideology into the country,' Ismail said. Another 15 individuals of unspecified nationalities have also been issued deportation orders, while 16 others are still under investigation for their suspected involvement in the ISIS. The Malaysian Home Minister said the success of this operation has shown the efficiency and professionalism of Malaysia's security forces — especially the police — in ensuring the country's sovereignty, harmony and public peace. He said the Home Ministry will continue to strengthen intelligence capabilities and increase enforcement, besides working together with both domestic and foreign security agencies to ensure Malaysia remains peaceful, stable and free from threats of terrorism. 'Any attempts to make Malaysia a base for militant operations or transit centre for extremism movements will be tackled with firm, quick and effective action,' the Minister said. Since the ouster of PM Sheikh Hasina last August the outlawed terror and radical groups in Bangladesh have activated themselves and are dominating political discourse.

SC closes PFI' leaders' interim bail case after State agrees to provide physio in Tihar

ANI 27 Jun 2025, 14:44 GMT+10 New Delhi [India], June 27 (ANI): The Supreme Court on Friday closed the plea filed by Popular Front of India (PFI) leader and UAPA accused AS Ismail seeking interim bail on medical grounds, after noting the State authorities' assurance that physiotherapy facilities are available in Tihar Jail and will be provided to him as per medical advice. The bench had earlier rejected Ismail's interim bail request and sought a response from the State on whether adequate medical care could be ensured within the jail premises. Senior counsel Archana Pathak Dave appearing for the State authorities (Delhi government) informed a bench of Justices KV Viswanathan and N Kotiswar Singh that physiotherapy as sought by Ismail is available in Tihar jail one and if so required by the petitioner, the same can be provided in Tihar jail three as well, depending on the medical advice of an authorized doctor. After noting the same, the bench disposed of the matter. In the last hearing, the top court had refused to grant interim bail to Ismail over medical grounds and had asked the Tihar Jail authorities whether he could be provided physiotherapy inside the jail. Ismail had moved a plea seeking interim bail on medical grounds. He has been arrested by the National Investigation Agency (NIA) under the UAPA for allegedly radicalising Muslim youth and inciting them against the Indian government and other organisations that do not support the establishment of Islamic rule in India. Ismail was earlier associated with the banned Students Islamic Movement of India (SIMI), served as PFI's Tamil Nadu president, and later became a member of its National Executive Council. After satisfying itself of the submissions in today's hearing, the Court closed the matter. (ANI)

Malaysian agency to forfeit RM177 million linked to ex-PM probe: report

[KUALA LUMPUR] The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) plans to seek forfeiture of RM177 million (S$54 million) in assets and cash it seized in its probe into former prime minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob, the New Straits Times reported. The deputy public prosecutor will file for the forfeiture within two weeks, MACC chief commissioner Azam Baki was cited as saying on Wednesday (Jun 25). The probe focused on allegations of graft and money laundering related to funds used for publicity and promotion while Ismail was in office. Azam said the investigation has been completed. Ismail, 65, Malaysia's shortest-serving prime minister, held the post from August 2021 until dissolving Parliament in October 2022. He is a member of the United Malays National Organisation, part of the ruling coalition. Ismail is among a group of former prime ministers to be ensnared in the MACC's dragnet as Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim seeks to clamp down on corruption. Ismail's direct predecessor, Muhyiddin Yassin, is facing graft charges in court, while Najib Razak, another former premier, is in prison for crimes related to the state investment fund 1MDB. Malaysia's former two-time prime minister, Mahathir Mohamad, is under a separate investigation. BLOOMBERG
