Work on Sg Rasau WTP project to resume this month
Aerial view of Sungai Rasau Water Treatment Plant in Taman Mas, Puchong following the embankment collapse on Sept 7 last year. — Filepic CONSTRUCTION work on the intake component for the Sungai Rasau Water Treatment Plant (WTP) project at Taman Mas in Puchong, Selangor, is set to restart this month. The project was halted due to an embankment collapse on Sept 7, 2024, prompting a stop-work order to assess the situation and implement additional safety measures. This order has now been lifted, according to Selangor infrastructure and agriculture committee chairman Datuk Izham Hashim. He said the contractor was currently engaged in preliminary works, with mobilisation proceeding in phases. 'An independent consultant appointed by Air Selangor has completed the review on the repair works and the proposed new design for the collapsed embankment at the Sungai Rasau WTP intake, as submitted by the contractor,' he said at the Selangor State Assembly sitting at Bangunan Dewan Negeri Selangor in Shah Alam. The design improvements include the implementation of a cellular cofferdam or double wall, where the space between the walls will be filled with sand. Additionally, he said the project would utilise the latest design innovations, including a more robust 'flat web sheet pile', a technology imported from Japan. He added that works were expected to be completed by January next year. Izham said this in reply to Datuk Dr Ahmad Yunus Hairi (PN-Sijangkang) who asked when the project would resume. According to Air Selangor, the Sungai Rasau WTP is part of the RM3.4bil allocated for the first out of two stages of the Rasau Water Supply Scheme that was expected to become Malaysia's largest and most advanced water treatment facility. Stage 1 would have the capacity to produce 700 million litres of clean water daily by the end of next year. It will substantially reduce risk from river pollution, provide flood mitigation and support growing demand, including from industrial and technology sectors. It would encompass nine former tin mining ponds covering 489ha, serving as the country's first dual-function off-river storage system. When completed, it will be capable of supplying water and mitigating floods, including in flood-prone areas of Taman Sri Muda, Shah Alam. Stage 2 will begin development in 2027 and is expected to be fully completed by 2030.

Malaysia Aviation Group doubles A330neo commitment with order for 20 more aircraft
KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia Aviation Group (MAG), the parent company of national carrier Malaysia Airlines Bhd, has taken a major step in its long-term fleet renewal strategy by exercising its purchase rights for 20 additional Airbus A330neo (new engine option) aircraft, doubling its total commitment of the aircraft type to 40 planes. MAG group managing director, Datuk Captain Izham Ismail said the new order, which was a direct order with Airbus, builds on the group's initial purchase of 20 A330neo aircraft in 2022, comprising 10 aircraft directly purchased and 10 leased from aircraft lessor, Avolon. "The A330neo continues to deliver the right balance of operational efficiency, range, and cabin comfort to support our network and growth strategy. "This additional order reinforces our long-term vision of building a future-ready fleet that supports sustainable growth, delivers consistent value to our passengers, and strengthens our competitiveness in key markets," he announced in a statement today. The announcement was made during Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim's official visit to France. MAG said deliveries of the new batch of A330neos are scheduled between 2029 and 2031. The aircraft will be powered by the latest generation Rolls-Royce Trent 7000 engines. The aircraft will be used to enhance the group's connectivity and expand its network across key markets in Asean, China, India and Australasia with the aim of strengthening Malaysia Airlines' position as a leading premium carrier in Asia Pacific. So far, the group has taken delivery of four A330neos, which are operating on selected services to Auckland, Melbourne and Bali. MAG is expecting to receive another six aircraft by end-2025. The remaining order from the 2022 order is set to arrive progressively through to 2028. Airbus welcomed the repeat order from MAG, viewing it as a strong endorsement of the A330neo's performance and appeal among full-service carriers. "We are proud to further strengthen our relationship with MAG as it expands its A330neo fleet. This repeat order is a strong endorsement of the A330neo's exceptional performance, fuel efficiency, versatility, and passenger comfort, as well as a testament to the aircraft's popularity among the world's premium airlines," Airbus EVP Sales of the commercial business Benoît de Saint-Exupéry said. The order for 20 additional A330neo is the first part of MAG's three major widebody aircraft campaigns as the group charts its next phase of twin-aisle fleet growth. Izham told Business Times in an interview in April that the second campaign will see the group evaluating new long-range widebody aircraft such as the A350, Boeing B787 Dreamliner and B777-9. The third campaign involves renewing the cargo fleet operated by MAG's freighter arm, MASKargo. Izham said the group is exploring whether to convert its A330ceo (current engine option) passenger aircraft into freighters or to acquire brand new cargo aircraft MAG is expected to issue a request for proposal for its long-range widebody campaign in the third or fourth quarter this year.

Southwest Monsoon: Selangor Dams' Capacity Sufficient For Up To Six Months
SHAH ALAM, June 27 (Bernama) -- Water levels in all seven dams in Selangor are above 95 per cent and are expected to last for another three to six months, said Selangor Infrastructure and Agriculture Committee chairman Datuk Izham Hashim. He said despite the ongoing hot and dry weather due to the Southwest Monsoon, dam water levels are expected to remain stable in the coming months. He said that the Southwest Monsoon, which began on May 10 and is expected to continue until September, typically brings low humidity and reduced rainfall in most areas. 'However, dam water levels can be replenished during the monsoon transition period in October, and the Northeast Monsoon from November to March, when high rainfall is expected in the catchment areas,' he said in a statement, today. Izham added that Lembaga Urus Air Selangor (LUAS) has identified additional ponds and former mining sites near major rivers, which are suitable for upgrading with water supply infrastructure to boost raw water storage capacity. 'These ponds are branded under the Selangor Off-River Storage Scheme (SORSS), which involves over 100 ponds and several former mining sites,' he said. Elaborating further, Izham said that the development of the SORSS will help optimise the use of alternative water sources, with its current supply capacity lasting up to three months. 'Overall, the readiness of the state's water resources, including dam capacity and SORSS development, is estimated to last up to nine months, to withstand the Southwest Monsoon,' he said. Izham added that LUAS is also maximising the use of groundwater as an alternative to treated water, particularly for the industrial sector, through licensing and water abstraction charges. Three groundwater wells have been built in Hulu Selangor for use, especially during the dry season.

In terms of water quality, Izham said that the Zero Discharge Policy (ZDP), implemented through the Licensing Regulations for the Discharge of Return Water and the Entry or Release of Waste Materials and Pollutants 2024, is actively being enforced and helps minimise pollution of water resources. "To date, there have been no recorded disruptions to the state's water treatment plant operations, caused by industrial pollution of water resources," he said. - Bernama
