Meet the JAG officer roaming the halls of the Missouri Capitol
JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. – Steven Roberts is dedicated to public service. The Democrat is not only a Missouri state senator, he's also a former St. Louis City prosecutor who joined the U.S. Air Force. He currently serves as an officer with the Judge Advocate General's Corps (JAG). Stationed in Missouri, Roberts is a Captain in the Missouri Air National Guard's 131st Bomb Wing at Whiteman Air Force Base near Knob Noster, Missouri. 'When everyone hears JAG, they think that I fly planes,' Roberts said. 'I'm just a legal adviser.' Roberts is the Deputy Staff Judge Advocate for the infamous bomber wing at the high profile air base, which is home to the B-2 stealth bomber. 'The military code of justice, which is considered federal, but is very different.' Roberts graduated from the University of Miami before getting his law degree from Pepperdine University. Roberts is now serving in his last term in the Missouri Senate where he is the assistant floor leader, the second highest ranking Democrat leader in the upper legislative body. He played a pivotal part in securing more than $100 million in state funds for victims of the deadly St. Louis tornado that struck two months ago. Before making the switch to the Senate, Roberts served two two-year terms in the Missouri House of Representatives. He's also a past chairman of the Missouri Legislative Black Caucus.
