Rehabilitation plan for coalfield fire victims, Pune Metro get nod
The Union Cabinet led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday approved three development projects, including the extension of the Pune Metro, a revised rehabilitation plan for displaced families of the Jharia coalfields in Jharkhand, and the establishment of the International Potato Centre's regional centre in Agra. Union minister Ashwini Vaishnaw briefs the media on cabinet decisions in New Delhi on Wednesday. (PTI) Addressing a press conference, Union minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said that Pune currently has 33.3km of operational metro lines, with another 33km under construction. The ₹ 3,626 crore project for Pune Metro Line Phase 2 will extend the metro route by 12.75km, adding 13 new stations to boost the east-west connectivity across the city. Two elevated corridors, Vanaz to Chandani Chowk and Ramwadi to Wagholi, as extensions of the existing Vanaz-Ramwadi line are aimed at linking key suburbs, IT hubs, and transport nodes across the city. 'Systematic efforts have been made to modernise urban transport in Pune,' Vaishnaw said, adding that metro connectivity, which was limited to just five cities before 2014, has now expanded to 24 cities, with daily ridership rising from 2.8 million to 11 million. The Centre also approved the ₹ 5,940 crore revised master plan to deal with the rehabilitation of the affected families in Jharia coalfield fire in Jharkhand. 'The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs has approved the revised Jharia Master Plan (JMP) for addressing issues related to fire, land subsidence and the rehabilitation of affected families in the Jharia coalfield,' a statement issued by the government said. The government also cleared a proposal to set up the South Asia regional research centre of the International Potato Centre (CIP) in Agra entailing financial support of ₹ 111.5 crore. The objective of this investment is to increase food and nutrition security, farmers' income, and job creation by improving potato and sweet potato productivity, post-harvest management and value-addition, a government statement said. Vaishnaw said that research at the regional centre will focus on seed production, pest management, sustainable production, and training of Uttar Pradesh government has already allocated 10 acres for the research centre. Headquartered in Lima, Peru, the International Potato Center (CIP) focuses on research and development of potato, sweet potato and Andean roots and tubers.

New Delhi: The government on Wednesday approved the Rs 5,940-crore revised Jharia Master Plan (JMP) to deal with fire and rehabilitation of affected families. The decision in this regard was taken during the Cabinet meeting under the Chairmanship of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The total financial outlay for the implementation of the revised plan is Rs 5,940.47 crore. The revised JMP lays a much stronger emphasis on sustainable livelihood generation for families being resettled under the plan. Targeted skill development programmes are to be undertaken and income-generating opportunities will be created to ensure economic self-reliance of the rehabilitated families. The Jharia Master Plan for dealing with fire, subsidence and rehabilitation in Jharkhand's Dhanbad district was approved by the Centre in August 2009, with an implementation period of 10 years and a pre-implementation period of two years with an estimated investment of Rs 7,112.11 crore. The plan expired in 2021.

New Delhi [India], June 25 (ANI): The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has approved the Revised Jharia Master Plan (JMP) for addressing issues related to fire, land subsidence, and the rehabilitation of affected families in the Jharia Coalfield. The total financial outlay for the implementation of the revised plan is Rs 5,940.47 crore,a release said. The phase wise approach shall ensure that handling of fire and subsidence and rehabilitation of the affected families will be done on priority basis from the most vulnerable sites. The revised JMP lays a much stronger emphasis on sustainable livelihood generation for families being resettled under the plan. Targeted skill development programmes are to be undertaken and income-generating opportunities will be created to ensure economic self-reliance of the rehabilitated families. Furthermore, a Livelihood Grant of Rs 1 Lakh and access to credit support of up to Rs 3 Lakh through an institutional credit pipeline will be extended to both Legal Title Holder (LTH) families and Non-Legal Title Holder (Non-LTH) families. In addition, comprehensive infrastructure and essential amenities--such as roads, electricity, water supply, sewerage, schools, hospitals, skill development centres, community halls, and other common facilities--are to be developed at the resettlement sites. These provisions will be implemented as per the recommendations of the Committee for Implementation of the Revised Jharia Master Plan, ensuring a holistic and humane rehabilitation approach. As part of the livelihood support measures, a dedicated Jharia Alternative Livelihoods Rehabilitation Fund is to be established to promote livelihood-related activities. Skill development initiatives will also be carried out in collaboration with Multi-Skill Development Institutes operating in the region. (ANI)

The revised plan adopts a phase-wise implementation strategy, prioritising fire control, land stability, and relocation of families residing in the most vulnerable zones of the coal mining area. The government has also emphasised sustainable livelihood support as a core component of the rehabilitation process. Each resettled family—whether Legal Title Holder (LTH) or Non-Legal Title Holder (Non-LTH)—will be given a livelihood grant of ₹1 lakh. In addition, institutional credit support of up to ₹3 lakh will be made available through a formal credit pipeline to facilitate income generation. Comprehensive infrastructure development at the new resettlement sites will include roads, electricity, water supply, sewerage, schools, hospitals, skill development centres, and community halls. These provisions will be implemented in line with recommendations from the Committee for Implementation of the Revised Jharia Master Plan. To promote self-reliance among relocated communities, a dedicated Jharia Alternative Livelihoods Rehabilitation Fund will be created. Skill development programmes in collaboration with Multi Skill Development Institutes will also be rolled out across the region. The approval marks a renewed effort to address the challenges in the Jharia coal belt and ensure long-term resettlement and economic support for families impacted by decades of underground fires and land instability.
