Pulau Aur Residents Appeal For Boat Fare Subsidy
MERSING, July 24 (Bernama) -- Residents of Pulau Aur are calling on the Johor government to introduce a boat fare subsidy to ease travel costs, especially for medical needs and family visits. Currently, a return trip to the mainland costs up to RM210 per person, a heavy burden for many in the B40 income group, according to housewife Hatasa Rabudin, 40. 'I rarely visit my parents in Kampung Teluk Berhala because the boat fare alone is RM105 one way,' she said during a media visit to the island recently. She recalled pooling RM7,000 with relatives in 2018 to charter a ferry home for Hari Raya, adding that her chronically ill father also has to travel twice a month to Mersing for treatment. 'There's a village clinic on the island, but more serious cases need referral to the mainland,' she said, urging the state to consider a subsidy similar to Pahang's initiative for Pulau Tioman residents. Long-time Mersing resident Masli Sulaiman, 56, added that deteriorating infrastructure has made boat travel the only option even between nearby villages. 'There used to be a land route to the jetty, but now it's overgrown and the main bridge is damaged. A subsidy would help in emergencies and allow more frequent visits to elderly relatives,' she said. Village Development and Security Committee (JPKK) chairman Sabinah Md Seth said most locals are fishermen or small-scale farmers without stable income and even a partial subsidy would ease their burden. Located 76 kilometres from the mainland, Pulau Aur is a popular ecotourism destination and a strategic route for local and international fishing vessels. From July 18–20, 50 Johor Corporation (JCorp) volunteers and six media representatives took part in a coral reef rehabilitation programme on the island.

Perak Allocates RM720,000 In Grants To Empower Cooperatives
KUALA KANGSAR, July 17 (Bernama) -- The Perak government has allocated RM720,000 to assist cooperatives in the state through the GKOP Urus and GKOP Pulih assistance grants. State Women, Family, Social Welfare, Cooperatives and Entrepreneur Development Committee chairman Datuk Salbiah Mohamed said the initiative could help cooperatives increase their income through business activities. She said the GKOP Urus assisted cooperatives in their early business ventures with grants of up to RM5,000, while the GKOP Pulih provided up to RM30,000 for cooperatives seeking to revive operations and return to active status. 'This form of assistance, which was introduced last year, has greatly helped strengthen cooperatives in the state,' she said. She said this when met by reporters after attending the Sejati MADANI Impian Jadi Realiti Wilayah Programme held in conjunction with National Cooperative Month 2025, organised by the Malaysia Co-operative Societies Commission Perak Branch, here today. On the programme, Salbiah said it was held to encourage members of the Village Development and Security Committee (JPKK) to establish cooperatives as a platform to manage business activities using the RM100,000 allocation received from the federal government. She said the establishment of cooperatives served as a management mechanism that empowered them to carry out business activities with the potential to generate income and improve the socio-economic status of the community and their members. 'The formation of cooperatives by the JPKK indirectly offers opportunities for members to take part in their management and benefit economically from cooperative activities,' she added. -- BERNAMA

Ensuring no one left out
Published on: Tuesday, July 15, 2025 Published on: Tue, Jul 15, 2025 By: Azmie Lim Text Size: Abdul Hakim said JPKK and village chiefs play a crucial role in helping the government to safeguard the welfare of the people. LAHAD DATU: Village Development and Security Committees (JPKK) and village chiefs have been urged to be more proactive in carrying out their roles to ensure that no members of the community are left out from receiving government assistance. Parti Gagasan Rakyat Sabah (PGRS) Tungku Divisional head, Datuk Abdul Hakim Gulam Hassan, said JPKK and village chiefs play a crucial role in helping the government to safeguard the welfare of the people. Advertisement He said every JPKK and village chief must take a more proactive approach, regardless of political background. 'The role of the JPKK and village chiefs is important not only in voicing the development needs of their respective villages but, more importantly, in looking after the welfare of the people. 'JPKK and village chiefs are closer to the community and understand their needs better. Relay these needs to the leaders or responsible parties so that the people can receive the assistance they deserve.' Abdul Hakim said this after distributing aid to 25 families in Mukim Silabukan during his visit to the grassroots on Monday. The outreach activity is one of the programmes to engage with local residents – not only to deliver aid, but also to see first-hand the realities of people's lives, especially among the less fortunate. He said the role of the JPKK, village chiefs and local leaders in providing information will help ensure that aid reaches the intended target groups. In addition, Abdul Hakim encouraged welfare bodies such as the Sabah Zakat Center and the Welfare Department to conduct more frequent 'turun padang' (going down to meet the grassroots) visits to identify those genuinely in need. 'We know that the Welfare Department and Sabah Zakat Centre are active in helping the people, but we urge them to carry out more such outreach activities so that no one is left behind. 'This is because not everyone knows how to navigate the process of applying for government or welfare-related aid,' he said. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Black, polluted river sparks outrage in Sungai Udang village
MELAKA: For the past week, Sungai Air Batu in Kampung Paya Rumput Jaya, Sungai Udang, has turned black and foul-smelling, believed to be due to leachate discharge from a landfill. The pollution has persisted since 2023, causing distress to villagers, including smallholders and padi farmers. Resident Syukur Azzaki Abdul Talib, 47, said numerous complaints had been lodged with the authorities, but the issue remained unresolved. "This pollution has gone on day after day, month after month, year after year. "We've reported everything, but it keeps happening due to seepage from the landfill. "The black water causes a stench in the entire village, not just homes by the riverbank, because the water flows into the main river. "There used to be fish in the river, but now there's no life in the thick, black water. No one dares go into it," he said during a site visit. Paya Rumput Hilir Village Development and Security Committee (JPKK) chairman Mohamad Abdul Rahman said the pollution had affected farmers and padi growers. "I am dissatisfied with the leachate from the Sungai Udang landfill flowing into Sungai Air Batu and down to the Sungai Lereh estuary. "It's unacceptable. We've complained for years. Sometimes action is taken, sometimes not, and yet they continue discharging wastewater without informing JPKKs. "In my area, vegetable farmers are the worst affected. "They can't water their crops because the water is black and contains chemicals that cause plants to die," he said. Mohamad, who manages a 12ha padi field, said the contamination was affecting his yield. "I hope the landfill operator and the state government will monitor the situation and ensure the excess retention ponds can contain the leachate before it enters Sungai Air Batu. "I also hope Rural Development, Agriculture and Food Security Committee chairman Datuk Dr Muhamad Akmal Saleh will raise this issue at the next executive councillor meeting." Crop farmer Mohd Razali Zakaria, 44, said he had suffered losses after his crops were damaged by the polluted river water. "I didn't get any harvest from my corn. The plants were damaged, and the fruit turned rotten after being watered with the black, foamy water. "I planted 1,000 corn stalks and nearly every plant had problems. "Even when I sprayed pesticides using the contaminated water, the pests didn't die. Instead, fruit flies started attacking the crops." He said he had invested around RM10,000 in the farm.

JPKK reminded to uphold integrity in fund management
SEREMBAN: All Village Development and Security Committee (JPKK) chairpersons and committee members are reminded to uphold integrity in managing funds entrusted to them, said Negeri Sembilan Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Aminuddin Harun. He said all allocations channelled through various initiatives are a responsibility that must be appropriately managed, and any form of misappropriation, abuse or implementation delays could tarnish the government's image and erode public trust. 'I want to stress that integrity in managing government funds is crucial. Every sen disbursed through any allocation is a trust from the people. 'The Sejati MADANI Initiative fund, for example, must be managed responsibly, transparently and effectively. It is not just financial allocation, but a symbol of the government's trust in the JPKK. Therefore, there should be no room for abuse, leakage or wastage,' he said in his speech at the 'Majlis Amanat Menteri Besar' with 434 JPKK members here today. Also present was senior state executive councillor Datuk Seri Jalaluddin Alias. The event also saw all JPKK members taking the Corruption-Free Pledge, witnessed by Negeri Sembilan Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission director Awgkok Ahmad Taufik Putra Awg Ismail. Aminuddin said appointments for the new JPKK term would be evaluated based on management performance, meeting implementation, achievements, and the execution of Sejati MADANI programmes. These components, he added, would serve as key indicators for the government, particularly state assemblymen, to ensure the quality and effectiveness of services provided. Meanwhile, Jalaluddin called on all JPKK chairpersons to work closely with their respective assemblymen to ensure smooth and effective implementation of development programmes. 'The core responsibility of the JPKK is village development and management. Do not turn the JPKK into a tool for personal gain or to undermine others,' he said.
