Black, polluted river sparks outrage in Sungai Udang village

MELAKA: For the past week, Sungai Air Batu in Kampung Paya Rumput Jaya, Sungai Udang, has turned black and foul-smelling, believed to be due to leachate discharge from a landfill.
The pollution has persisted since 2023, causing distress to villagers, including smallholders and padi farmers.
Resident Syukur Azzaki Abdul Talib, 47, said numerous complaints had been lodged with the authorities, but the issue remained unresolved.
"This pollution has gone on day after day, month after month, year after year.
"We've reported everything, but it keeps happening due to seepage from the landfill.
"The black water causes a stench in the entire village, not just homes by the riverbank, because the water flows into the main river.
"There used to be fish in the river, but now there's no life in the thick, black water. No one dares go into it," he said during a site visit.
Paya Rumput Hilir Village Development and Security Committee (JPKK) chairman Mohamad Abdul Rahman said the pollution had affected farmers and padi growers.
"I am dissatisfied with the leachate from the Sungai Udang landfill flowing into Sungai Air Batu and down to the Sungai Lereh estuary.
"It's unacceptable. We've complained for years. Sometimes action is taken, sometimes not, and yet they continue discharging wastewater without informing JPKKs.
"In my area, vegetable farmers are the worst affected.
"They can't water their crops because the water is black and contains chemicals that cause plants to die," he said.
Mohamad, who manages a 12ha padi field, said the contamination was affecting his yield.
"I hope the landfill operator and the state government will monitor the situation and ensure the excess retention ponds can contain the leachate before it enters Sungai Air Batu.
"I also hope Rural Development, Agriculture and Food Security Committee chairman Datuk Dr Muhamad Akmal Saleh will raise this issue at the next executive councillor meeting."
Crop farmer Mohd Razali Zakaria, 44, said he had suffered losses after his crops were damaged by the polluted river water.
"I didn't get any harvest from my corn. The plants were damaged, and the fruit turned rotten after being watered with the black, foamy water.
"I planted 1,000 corn stalks and nearly every plant had problems.
"Even when I sprayed pesticides using the contaminated water, the pests didn't die. Instead, fruit flies started attacking the crops."
He said he had invested around RM10,000 in the farm.

Jalan Kuching Ranger Depo drainage system to get RM300,000 upgrade

Yap (second right) hands over the LoA to the contractor's representative. KUCHING (July 11): The drainage system at Jalan Kuching Ranger Depo, Mile 7 here will get an RM300,000 upgrade. When handing over the letter of award (LoA) to the contractor today, Kota Sentosa assemblyman Wilfred Yap said the upgrading comes under his 2023 Rural Transformation Project (RTP) allocation. It will involve constructing around 300 metres of reinforced concrete drains measuring 1.2 metres wide and between 1.2 and 1.5 metres deep. 'The drainage upgrade is urgently needed to address repeated flash flooding problems affecting the area in front of the Kota Sentosa Library, Tadika Dewan Perniagaan Batu Tujuh, and the Seventh Mile Community Association Hall. 'For years, heavy rainfall has caused overflows that disrupted daily activities, endangered road users, and created inconvenience for the public,' Yap said in a press statement following a site visit with Public Works Department (JKR) officers. He said the project is also necessary due to visible signs of soil erosion along the roadside, which could further undermine road stability and safety if not addressed. Construction work is scheduled to begin immediately and expected to be completed by the middle of November. According to Yap, the project will solve the Mile 7 area's long-standing drainage and flooding issues. 'This project is part of my ongoing commitment to listen to residents' complaints and act decisively to improve public safety and quality of life. I take every report from the community seriously and I will continue working closely with JKR, local leaders, and residents to ensure that infrastructure issues are properly addressed,' he said. He stressed the successful implementation of such projects reflects the Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) government's focus on practical solutions rather than empty promises. 'As your representative, I will always be ready to hear your concerns and work together towards sustainable improvements in Kota Sentosa. I encourage all residents to continue engaging with my service centre so that no issue, big or small, goes unnoticed,' he added. drainage system Jalan Kuching Ranger Depo lead Mile 7 Wilfred Yap

SXI Class of ‘85/‘87 gift rainwater harvesting system to alma mater

(From right) SXI Penang brother director Brother Jason Blaikie, Tan, Board of Governors treasurer Jeffrey Chew and old Xaverians posing with a mock cheque for RM68,888 beside the donated rainwater harvesting system. — KT GOH/The Star IN A gesture that embodies their 'Honouring the Past, Building for the Future' reunion theme, St Xavier's Institution (SXI) Class of '85/'87 gifted their alma mater a new rainwater harvesting system. This sustainable installation serves as a tribute to their late schoolmate, Bernard Lim Peng Aun, who passed away of a heart attack earlier this year, and reflects his lifelong dedication to innovation and social impact. The sixth official reunion of the Class of '85/'87's drew 154 former students and 17 ex-teachers to the school's Heah Joo Seang Hall. SXI Board of Governors chairman Victor Tan praised the initiative. He said the system, costing about RM10,000, would help the school save money in the long run as the collected water would be used to water plants and keep the SXI clean. 'This gift of a rainwater system is a perfect reflection of how one person's spirit can continue to make a difference. 'We are humbled and inspired by the Class of '85/'87's generosity,' said Tan. The reunion also served as a platform to raise funds for the much-needed upgrade of SXI's school field. This historic field, dating back to 1911, was purchased by Catholic De La Salle Brothers for $99,550 (Straits dollars). The field has witnessed significant historical moments, including its transformation into a makeshift 'attap school' after SXI's main building was bombed during World War II. Today, it faces challenges such as hard ground conditions, poor drainage and seasonal flooding. With 1,300 students depending on it for sports and co-curricular activities, the field needs an overhaul, Tan said. 'The RM1.4mil planned upgrade will include excavation and drainage works, and re- turfing of the football field at a cost of RM430,000,' said Tan. 'It will also see the installation of a 300m synthetic track (RM780,000) and facilities for field events (RM190,000). 'So far, RM100,000 has been pledged by the Penang government while the SXI Board of Governors has committed RM200,000. 'The reunion raised RM68,888, a testament to the commitment of Xavierians to their alma mater,' Tan said. To raise the amount needed, Tan announced that the school will hold the SXI Run 2025 on Sept 21. 'We hope to attract 1,000 people to take part in the run. 'We also welcome sponsors and community involvement. 'Various donation tiers are available. These include title sponsor (RM30,000), gold (RM10,000), silver (RM5,000) and bronze (RM1,000), with all contributions being tax-exempt,' he said, adding that sponsorships, student entries and in-kind donations are welcome. Participants will each receive a finisher's medal, certificate of participation and T-shirt. There are also lucky draw prizes and cash prizes for selected categories. For donation and sponsorship enquiries, call Tan at 019-480 6556. To register for the run, visit
