Jacksonville Armada advance in playoff opener
The Jacksonville Armada are moving on in the National Premier Soccer League playoffs after a 2-1 victory over longtime rival New Orleans on Wednesday night at Edward Waters University. In a steady rain, the Boys in Blue scored first when Moritz Zettl provided his first goal of the season and did so in highlight fashion. Advertisement After teammate Gustavo Marques won a ball at midfield, Moritz let iT fly from 55 yards out, arcing over the Jesters' goalkeeper and into the back of the net. New Orleans would fight back to equalize late in the first half as an Armada handball in the box set up Erick Gunera for the game-tying penalty kick, leading to a 1-1 halftime score. The Gulf Coast Sunshine Conference semifinal would remain tied until the 63rd minute. Fresh off the bench, Lewis Matton would take the ball from midfield, race past the Jesters' defenders, and just sneak it by the keeper to retake the lead for Jacksonville. The defense would take it from there, holding on to advance with a 2-1 win. Advertisement Jacksonville will be right back at Nathaniel Glover Community Field & Stadium on Saturday night to host the Gulf Coast Sunshine Conference Championship game against Naples United FC at 7 pm. It'll be a chance at revenge for the Fleet as they face the only team to beat them this season. Jacksonville Armada FC fans call for permanent stadium amid ongoing venue changes
Jacksonville Armada FC fans call for a permanent home for the team after being forced to move yet another U23 match, this time due to a sudden venue cancellation by Edward Waters University. Matches were held Saturday at Patton Park, where fans showed up with drums and chants — but also voiced frustration over the last-minute location change. Advertisement >>> STREAM ACTION NEWS JAX LIVE <<< 'Every year, there's something. This year it was Waters, last year JU, before that Episcopal, and before that BK. We're used to it,' said Sebastian Cardona of the Section 904 Supporters Group. The team announced the venue change just 24 hours before kickoff after EWU canceled all event contracts. In a post on X, the club called the move 'unprofessional.' In a statement, Edward Waters University cited 'unexpected administrative issues with their facilities' as the reason for the cancellation. [DOWNLOAD: Free Action News Jax app for alerts as news breaks] Despite the sudden change, some families said they preferred the new location. Advertisement 'To us it's closer so I like it better,' said parent Beth Duncan. 'It doesn't bother me. I'm here to support the team regardless,' said fan Josh Richburg. 'It is closer and it's familiar. I used to play here when I played soccer,' said former player Ty Duncan. 'No problem at all,' added parent Dennis Sciarrhgta. [SIGN UP: Action News Jax Daily Headlines Newsletter] EWU expressed regret in a statement and said it hopes to host future games again. 'So we would be glad to be back,' said Cardona. But many fans say the bigger issue remains unresolved. 'It's a problem that we should not be having because we should be playing at our stadium,' Cardona added. Advertisement Jacksonville Armada FC President Nathan Walter confirmed that stadium plans are in progress and are currently in the design and site phase. He said groundwork is expected to begin in the next 90 days. Attempts to reach Edward Waters University for clarification on the administrative issues were unsuccessful before the story aired. Jacksonville Armada forced to find new field after abruptly losing home
The Jacksonville Armada announced late Friday that Saturday's double header will be played on a different home field. The team usually plays its home games at Edward Waters University, but the school abruptly canceled the teams use of its facilities. The Armada will be playing Saturday's double header at Patton Park, 2850 Hodges Blvd, Jacksonville, the team said. Advertisement Edward Waters University released a statement Saturday saying, 'Due to an unforeseen and exigent administrative facilities management challenge, EWU regrettably was unable to host this weekend's contest as originally planned. We regret that this late discovery necessitated the temporary suspension of the use of our facilities for tomorrow's match.' EWU said it's working to resolve its issues so the Armada can play its final four games at the university. (See the school's full statement below.) Dramatic comeback earns Armada Women draw in home opener
It's only year two for the Jacksonville Armada Women's U-23 squad in the Women's Premier Soccer League, but they may have just provided their most memorable moment Saturday afternoon in a home opening 4-4 draw at Edward Waters University. The Girls in Blue fell behind early, allowing three goals in a five-minute span in the match against the two-time defending conference champions, the West Florida Flames. They would finally get on the board in the 61st minute when Sarah Brunner coolly stepped around the West Florida goalkeeper and slotted it home. That momentum would be short-lived with the Flames answering just five minutes later. Advertisement The outcome looked decided late in the match with West Florida up 4-1 in the 85th minute when Jacksonville started its comeback. Liz Anne Fogarty scored for the second time in as many matches to make it 4-2, but that scoreline wouldn't last for long. Just three minutes later, Talitha Hines scored to make it 4-3 in the 89th minute. The Armada had a number of chances in stoppage time to even the score before a late corner set up the dramatic finish. Initially cleared, the ball fell to Jianna Ramirez, who sent it back towards the net in search of a teammate. Instead, it went over the goalkeeper's head, off the post, and into the back of the net. That proved to be the final action in an amazing 4-4 finish between two top 25 nationally ranked teams and the expected frontrunners in the WPSL's Sunshine Conference this summer.
