Former Himachal CM calls on PM Modi, seeks ‘area-specific' relief package
New Delhi: With the loss pegged at over Rs 1,200 crore, former Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Jairam Thakur on Monday met Prime Minister Narendra Modi and apprised him of the damage caused in disaster-affected areas of the state while seeking an 'area-specific' relief package for rehabilitation. The Prime Minister took detailed information about the damage and assured all possible support in reconstruction and rehabilitation in the disaster-affected areas. Jairam Thakur said the Prime Minister was apprised that not only houses but also agricultural lands were washed away in the calamity that occurred on the night of June 30. 'Now people do not even have land to build houses. In such a situation, concessions should be given in the Forest Conservation Act to give them land so that the homeless people can be resettled in safe places,' a statement quoting BJP leader Thakur said. He has also requested the Prime Minister to give an 'area-specific' relief package for rehabilitation and reconstruction, and to study the causes of repeated natural disasters in the state to avoid losses. Thakur also thanked the Prime Minister for providing all possible support in the relief and rescue work. Thakur said the state has suffered a loss of more than Rs 1,200 crore. Out of this, more than Rs 1,000 crore has been incurred in the Seraj assembly alone. On the night of June 30, a total of 42 people lost their lives in Seraj, Karsog and Nachan, and 29 people were from Seraj alone. He said more than 500 houses were completely washed away, and 1,000 houses were damaged partially and, now not fit for living. Besides, there has been heavy damage in Nachan, Karsog and Dharampur too. Syathi village in Dharampur was completely razed to the ground, and people are spending nights in the open. 'Therefore, a request has also been made to provide 'area-specific' relief package for rehabilitation and reconstruction,' said Thakur, the sixth-time legislator from Seraj in Mandi district. He said natural calamities are recurring in many areas of the state. The Prime Minister has also been requested to study the causes of this so that repeated losses can be prevented.

If no action taken, we will see ‘Udta HP' in 5 yrs: Guv
1 2 3 Shimla: Raising serious concern over the lack of drug de-addiction and rehabilitation centres in Himachal Pradesh, given the steep increase in the number of drug dependent patients, governor Shiv Pratap Shukla warned that if the state govt fails to act swiftly, the Himalayan state could become 'Udta Himachal' like its neighbour 'Udta Punjab' in the next five years. "I am feeling a little hesitant, and despite repeated appeals, nothing is being done as there is only one rehabilitation centre of Red Cross in Kullu in the entire state," said Shukla. The state govt must have definitely moved forward to open various rehabilitation centres, but the only statement that comes is that the state govt is identifying land in Sirmaur district to establish a drug de-addiction and rehabilitation centre, he added. The governor stated that if we fail to take collective action today, it will spoil the entire generation. Addressing media persons at the Raj Bhawan, Shukla underlined that compared to the last decade, there has been an increase of 340% in the cases registered under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act this decade. Quoting official figures, he said that the NDPS cases have seen a steep hike in Himachal, from nearly 500 in the year 2012 to over 2,200 in 2023. The governor also cited a survey on 1,150 jail inmates by the drug de-addiction centres, and mentioned that the highest number of drug dependents were in the age bracket of 15-30 years. Mentioning his recent tour to Varanasi for a govt-organised 'Nasha Mukt Yuva, Viksit Bharat' programme, Shukla added that there, 'Kashi Sankalp' has been passed, which will now go across the country and it also includes various steps initiated by the Himachal governor. Highlighting his resolve to make Himachal drug-free, Shukla stated that a booklet 'Pradhan Mantri Ki Prerna, Rajyapal Ka Sankalp, Himachal Pradesh Nashamukt' has been compiled about various initiatives taken in the hill state. On the issue of the state govt seeking central govt's permission to use forest land for the rehabilitation of monsoon disaster-affected people, Shukla said, "I don't agree with the CM's statement that if Jairam Thakur is a BJP leader and there is a BJP-led govt at the Centre, so Jairam ji should go and talk to the central govt. Why did the CM not take Thakur along when he went to meet the Union home minister?" Shukla reiterated that this is the chief minister's job and not Thakur's, and if the state govt takes up this issue with the Centre, it will definitely extend a helping hand. The governor added that while BJP leaders like JP Nadda and Jairam Thakur are meeting Union ministers seeking disaster relief from the Centre, it is the state govt's responsibility to ensure land acquisition and to implement various welfare schemes for the disaster-affected people. "The Centre will not bring the land; the state must act swiftly," emphasised Shukla. MSID:: 122884957 413 |

War of words begins as Jairam Thakur slams Jagat Singh Negi over ‘irresponsible statement'
Former chief minister and Leader of Opposition (LoP) Jairam Thakur on Monday questioned the state Revenue, Horticulture and Tribal Minister Jagat Singh Negi for his purported comments towards the recent disaster struck in many areas in district Mandi including Seraj, which is being represented by the LoP. More than two dozens of people have been killed and several missing following cloudburst incidents in Mandi district. Referring to the alleged statement of Negi, in which he said 'when a tragedy struck in my area then I realised the pain of general public', Thakur said, 'there might be some personal differences between me and the minister but being a part of the state government, the Revenue Minister should not made such irresponsible statement. He should visit the disaster affected areas, especially Seraj'. The LoP also urged CM Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu to intervene in this matter. Thakur made these remarks during his interaction with media over certain issues including the transfer of a (executive engineer-) XEN-ranked official at Thunag in Mandi during the ongoing relief works. Thakur was in Mandi since July 1 and came to Shimla on Sunday. Terming the accusations of Thakur 'baseless', Negi accused the former CM of misrepresenting the facts, statements of his opponents in the media. 'Jairam Thakur has some issues with me. His behavior was never appropriate towards me since he was the chief minister and I was in the Opposition. I have been performing my duties being the Revenue, Horticulture and Tribal minister successfully. The entire government is standing like a rock behind the people of Mandi including Seraj in this time of crisis,' the revenue minister said. Meanwhile, addressing a press conference, Thakur also accused the Congress-led Himachal Pradesh government of 'insensitivity' and 'inaction' in the wake of the recent disaster in Mandi. He claimed that an executive engineer who was doing commendable work on the ground was transferred under pressure from certain political leaders. 'Till date, no senior officer from the state government has been deputed in Mandi,' he alleged. Thakur claimed that the government's indifference stems from the fact that the disaster occurred in his constituency. 'Recently, I received a call from the Panchayati Raj Minister suggesting that the Panchayati Raj Institute be shifted from Mandi. I challenge the government to show a single crack in that institute due to the disaster. Then why shift it?' he asked.
