Jais detains six over controversial eHati programme
SHAH ALAM: The Selangor Islamic Religious Department (Jais) has detained six individuals in connection with the controversial eHati marriage motivation programme held from Sept 27–30 last year at a convention centre here. Jais director Datuk Mohd Shahzihan Ahmad said the suspects, two men and four women aged between 26 and 47, were picked up in Shah Alam on July 18. He said investigations were opened under Sections 7 (false doctrine), 8 (false claims), 10 (insulting Islam) and 16 (unauthorised religious publications) of the Syariah Criminal Offences (Selangor) Enactment 1995. "The investigation was launched following suspicions that a ritual or ceremony contrary to Islamic teachings was held during the programme," he said in a statement yesterday. To date, Jais has recorded statements from 38 witnesses and identified 282 participants whose statements will also be taken. Three books and three VCDs seized from the event have been submitted to the Selangor Mufti Department for review. He said a comprehensive investigation into the programme's full content and module is ongoing, and findings will be submitted to the Selangor Syariah Prosecution Department for further action. On July 16, Selangor police chief Datuk Hussein Omar Khan confirmed reports of nude scenes involving four women during a segment called 'Queens Night'. That same day, six individuals, including the husband-and-wife founders of the programme and their child, were remanded for three days to assist in a separate investigation into indecent behaviour and minor offences. – BERNAMA

Jais denies backing eHati, says organisers told to comply with Islamic teachings after 2022 complaint over ‘self-pleasure' clip
SHAH ALAM, July 19 — The Selangor Islamic Religious Department (Jais) has today denied granting approval for the eHati programme following allegations made by the organiser in a recent media statement. Jais said a Clarification Panel met eHati organisers in November 2022 after receiving complaints from participants about activities that allegedly contradicted Islamic teachings. 'The Panel was shown a video used by the organisers, which included a method of self-pleasure for women purportedly aimed at strengthening marital intimacy,' it said in a statement. 'As a result, the Clarification Panel opined that the eHati programme could proceed, subject to the condition that any content or activities that contravene Islamic principles be removed.' It said in response, the company was instructed to regularly consult religious authorities or experts to ensure full compliance with Islamic teachings. 'Additionally, organisers were asked to include a disclaimer stating that the aforementioned video was intended for married couples only,' it added. Jais said its panel's recommendations were meant to prevent violations of Islamic principles, and did not equate to formal approval of the eHati programme or its activities. Jais stated that the organisers failed to submit the complete programme module for review after receiving recommendations in 2022. It added that had the company complied with the panel's stipulations, the incident at IDCC Shah Alam involving eHati recently would not have occurred. Jais director Datuk Mohd Shahzihan Ahmad had previously confirmed the case is being investigated under Section 7 of the Syariah Criminal Offences (Selangor) Enactment 1995 for alleged false doctrine. Earlier this week, Selangor police chief Comm Datuk Hussein Omar Khan urged members of the public who took part in the eHati 'Queen's Night' marriage motivation programme to give their statements at the Shah Alam District Police Headquarters as soon as possible. He said they have identified around 50 participants, of whom 30 have been interviewed. The remaining individuals have been asked to come forward or face arrest. The case is being investigated under Section 209 (false claims), Section 14 (minor offences), and Section 294 of the Penal Code, which includes offences committed under the guise of religion. Among those arrested are six individuals — four women and two men — believed to be married couples who participated in the so-called Queen's Night session, a four-day, three-night retreat offered under 'Package B' of the eHati programme.

Religious minister: Jais to call two new witnesses in eHati probe tomorrow
KUALA LUMPUR, July 14 — The Selangor Islamic Religious Department (Jais) will summon two new witnesses tomorrow to record their statements as part of the investigation into the eHati marriage programme, which is alleged to involve immoral activities and the dissemination of questionable beliefs. Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Religious Affairs), Datuk Dr Mohd Na'im Mokhtar, said that the case is being investigated under Section 7 of the Syariah Criminal Offences (Selangor) Enactment 1995. 'So far, I can confirm that the investigation has begun, and we hope that the witnesses will be present tomorrow,' he said after officiating the pre-launch ceremony of the 65th International Quran Recitation and Memorisation Assembly (MTHQA), at the World Trade Centre Kuala Lumpur (WTCKL), today. Mohd Na'im said that two women, who were the initial witnesses, had previously lodged a complaint with the Jais Research Division. 'However, I was informed by the Enforcement Division that both complainants appeared somewhat hesitant to come forward and provide further information to Jais. I hope this issue can be clarified, so that everyone understands the situation and the truth can be revealed,' he said. 'It is crucial for witnesses to come forward and assist the Jais Enforcement Division in carrying out a professional investigation, to ensure that no party is unfairly treated,' he said. He added that the Jais Enforcement Division is also working closely with the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM), which will investigate the case from the standpoint of potential civil law offences. In this regard, he urged all parties with relevant information to step forward and fully cooperate with the authorities. 'I sincerely urge all parties involved, or with relevant information, to come forward and assist the Jais Enforcement Division by providing truthful details, so that the matter can be resolved fairly and transparently,' he said. The public was recently taken aback by revelations on social media alleging that the eHati motivational programme, reportedly organised by a married couple, involved immoral activities and the propagation of dubious beliefs. In a recent post on the user's Facebook page, it was claimed that two women had performed a nude dance during a session, held at a convention centre in Shah Alam. It was further alleged that participants were given a liquid of unknown contents that induced emotional changes in a short time and were instructed to undergo 'holy cleansing baths' and 'rebirth' rituals resembling practices from other religions. — Bernama

Police to interview all eHati programme participants in probe into obscene performances
SHAH ALAM: Police will summon all participants of the recent eHati marriage motivation programme to have their statements recorded. Selangor police chief Datuk Hussein Omar Khan said investigations were launched after an inquiry paper was opened into the case. "Based on investigations under the inquiry paper, the case has now been classified under sections 294 (obscene songs) and 509 (Word or gesture intended to insult the modesty of a person) of the Penal Code and Section 14 of the Minor Offences Act. "More detailed investigations are needed to ascertain if there were obscene elements or teachings that deviate from societal norms as has been alleged. "A thorough investigation is underway to ensure every aspect and claim can be assessed fairly," he said in a statement. Hussein asked the public to be more vigilant and cautious when participating in any programmes, activities, or workshops with unclear objectives or unknown organisers. "The public is encouraged to conduct checks and make references beforehand before participating, so as not to get involved in activities that go against the law and moral values of society," he said. Selangor Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari was reported to have asked Jais to look into allegations of immoral activities occurring during the organisation of eHati programmes at a convention centre.
