Jais detains six over controversial eHati programme

SHAH ALAM: The Selangor Islamic Religious Department (Jais) has detained six individuals in connection with the controversial eHati marriage motivation programme held from Sept 27–30 last year at a convention centre here.
Jais director Datuk Mohd Shahzihan Ahmad said the suspects, two men and four women aged between 26 and 47, were picked up in Shah Alam on July 18.
He said investigations were opened under Sections 7 (false doctrine), 8 (false claims), 10 (insulting Islam) and 16 (unauthorised religious publications) of the Syariah Criminal Offences (Selangor) Enactment 1995.
"The investigation was launched following suspicions that a ritual or ceremony contrary to Islamic teachings was held during the programme," he said in a statement yesterday.
To date, Jais has recorded statements from 38 witnesses and identified 282 participants whose statements will also be taken. Three books and three VCDs seized from the event have been submitted to the Selangor Mufti Department for review.
He said a comprehensive investigation into the programme's full content and module is ongoing, and findings will be submitted to the Selangor Syariah Prosecution Department for further action.
On July 16, Selangor police chief Datuk Hussein Omar Khan confirmed reports of nude scenes involving four women during a segment called 'Queens Night'.
That same day, six individuals, including the husband-and-wife founders of the programme and their child, were remanded for three days to assist in a separate investigation into indecent behaviour and minor offences. – BERNAMA

Cops on money trail of legitimate businesses helping launder drug money

KUALA LUMPUR: Federal police are looking to step up the detection of legitimate businesses that may be helping launder drug money. Bukit Aman Narcotics Crime Investigation Department (NCID) director Datuk Hussein Omar Khan said there is a trend of drug syndicates using legitimate businesses to launder money. "This was discovered in several past arrests," he said in an interview with Harian Metro's Kafe Ahad. "We use a money trail approach to ensure the assets seized in drug busts can be traced, forfeited, and disposed of under existing legal provisions." On the NCID's plans to seek to close loopholes exploited by syndicates using legitimate businesses as a front, Hussein said there were several proposals. These included stringent business licence screening through background checks of company owners and the monitoring of financial transactions with the help of Bank Negara Malaysia and the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission to detect suspicious money flows. The police are also looking into the closer monitoring of e-commerce platforms and greater information sharing between the NCID and other enforcement agencies. On the issue of cross-border drug smuggling at the Malaysia-Thai border, Hussein said the NCID will step up efforts to dismantle syndicate networks, including at the grassroots level. This measure covers arrests under the Security Offences (Special Measures) Act and asset forfeitures. "We aim to cripple the syndicates financially through the seizure of property, assets, and cash." Hussein, the former Selangor police chief, took over as federal NCID director on July 21.

Two couples held in Kunak hotel raids

Published on: Sunday, July 27, 2025 Published on: Sun, Jul 27, 2025 By: Ibrahim Tadbir Text Size: Kunak Jheains Religious Administrative Officer, Mohd Jeffery Hamad KUNAK: Two couples were detained for alleged 'khalwat' (close proximity) during an anti-vice operation (Ops Cegah Maksiat) carried out by the Sabah Islamic Religious Affairs Department (Jheains) Kunak branch on Thursday night at two separate hotels in the district. Kunak Jheains Religious Administrative Officer, Mohd Jeffery Hamad, said one of the men arrested is believed to be married and was found in a hotel room with a woman who is not his lawful wife or 'mahram'. The couples were aged between their 20s and 30s, while the married man was in his 40s. The operation, which took place between 10pm and midnight, targeted several locations identified as high-risk areas for immoral activities. Two hotel rooms were found to be occupied by unrelated couples in suspicious circumstances. 'This action is not intended purely to punish, but as a preventive measure to curb growing social issues, especially among youths and married individuals,' Mohd Jeffery told the Daily Express. He added that all individuals detained had been brought to the Kunak Jheains office for further action under the Sabah Syariah Criminal Offences Enactment 1995. Mohd Jeffery also called on the public to remain vigilant and assist the authorities by reporting any activities that contradict Islamic teachings. 'We will continue to conduct such operations regularly and more comprehensively to ensure that Kunak remains a peaceful district, free from vice, and preserves the moral integrity of its community,' he said. KLIA officer remanded after CCTV allegedly shows RM8,000 bribe

KUALA LUMPUR, July 26 — The Malaysian Anti–Corruption Commission (MACC) in Selangor has remanded an enforcement officer suspected of accepting around RM8,000 in bribes while on duty at the arrival counter of the Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA). The five–day remand order, effective until July 29, was issued by Magistrate Zur Azureen Zainalkefli following MACC's application at the Shah Alam Magistrate's Court yesterday morning. According to a source, the male suspect, who is in his 20s, was arrested at 3pm on Thursday at his workplace. 'Preliminary investigations found that the suspect is believed to have received the bribe while on duty, and the act was detected through closed–circuit television (CCTV) surveillance. 'Upon inspection, around RM8,000 in cash was found in his pants pocket, and the money is suspected to be proceeds from counter setting activities,' the source said. Meanwhile, Selangor MACC deputy director Khairul Izwan Karim, when contacted, confirmed the arrest. The case is being investigated under Section 17(a) of the MACC Act 2009. — Bernama
