Underfunding pushes Border Authority to the edge
JOHANNESBURG - The Border Management Authority is underfunded, understaffed, and overwhelmed. The Authorities' latest report reveals a R4.5-billion shortfall, just a fraction of the boots and tech it needs. Security expert Jakkie Cilliers says it's not surprising. He says the idea was born under the Zuma administration, but is plagued by government incoherence. "We are at a situation where I think R3.5-billion has been allocated to it, which is completely insufficient," said Jackie Cilliers, chair of the Institute for Security Studies Board of Trustees. "We have an organisation that is not funded, that is supposed to perform a very necessary function that all the other departments were against, and now we struggle with insufficient funding."

Springbok Women taught chastening lesson despite fightback in big loss to Canada
The Springboks Women's wing Jakkie Cilliers contributed with a try and points off the kicking tee against Canada. The Springbok Women were punished for a first-half display littered with mistakes and penalties by Canada, losing 50-20 at a sunny but cool Loftus Versfeld in Pretoria on Saturday afternoon. The second-ranked Canadians punched holes in the South Africans' defence early on, putting the Bok Women on the back foot from the start. That pressure told when Deleaka Menin stretched over the line despite the attentions of Babalwa Latsha after five minutes. Julia Schell added the extra two points. The Springbok Women's pack was solid enough at scrum time, but lineout struggles proved costly. Hooker Micke Gunter struggled to find her jumpers throughout the half. Unfortunately, an alarming error count at the breakdown also cost the South Africans. It also undid much of the good work by the forwards, who worked tirelessly to get go-forward ball. The likes of Latsha, Sizophila Solontsi and Aseza Hele were prominent in this regard. The Bok Women were growing in confidence with 12 minutes played. A powerful SA scrum drove the Canadian pack backwards and they won a penalty in front of the posts. Winger Jakkie Cilliers banged it over to put the home team on the scoreboard. Fancy Bermudez scored Canada's second try after the ball was fed wide to the left from a quick feed off a Canada scrum, the skip pass and wraparound leading to an overlap. Schell missed the conversion, which rebounded off the post.

Spirited Springbok Women beaten by Canada in Pretoria
Canada confirmed their status as world No. 2 with a commanding 50–20 Test victory over the Springbok Women in Pretoria on Saturday afternoon. The Springbok Women looked competitive in the second half but lacked consistency across the full 80 minutes. Canada punished every South African error, illustrating why they remain one of the world's strongest teams. Canada opened the scoring in the sixth minute through Daleaka Menin, before the Springbok Women responded with a penalty by Jakkie Cilliers. But restart errors and soft defence allowed Canada to surge ahead with three more converted tries – from Fancy Bermudez, Flo Symonds, and Laetitia Royer – for a 26–3 halftime lead. The Springbok Women started the second half strongly, as Cilliers finished a slick break for a converted try. Canada hit back again through Alysha Corrigan, who scored twice within 10 minutes to extend their lead to 38–10. South Africa's backline reshuffle added spark, and Byrhandre Dolf scored after a solid midfield scrum. Sizo Solontsi crossed from a driving maul to narrow the gap to 38–20. But Canada closed out confidently, with Symonds and Caroline Crossley adding two late tries to cap a clinical win. South Africa can draw confidence from their second-half performance and improved structure after personnel changes. However, their first-half indiscipline and error rate proved costly. They must bring full-match discipline if they hope to challenge strong sides at Test level. Canada, on the other hand, showed ruthless efficiency and composure throughout. The Springbok Women now regroup ahead of next Saturday's second Test in Gqeberha. WHAT EXCITES YOU MOST ABOUT THE SPRINGBOK WOMEN'S TEAM?
