Jalen Hurts' Updated QB Ranking Both Strange and Flattering

Jalen Hurts' Updated QB Ranking Both Strange and Flattering originally appeared on Athlon Sports. We don't think you have to be a Philly fan to see this: Despite guiding the Philadelphia Eagles to a Super Bowl LIX win, starting quarterback Jalen Hurts hasn't received the respect a game MVP would typically be given. Advertisement Fans and analysts around the country have criticized Hurts' low passing totals before the Super Bowl and continue to use that as a reason to justify the argument that the rest of his talented roster "carried" him. Because of all the criticism, Hurts' status in the league — and maybe even his legacy has been deemed to be a controversial one. So much so that CBS Sports' Cody Benjamin has gone out of his way to call Hurts one of the league's most "underrated" quarterbacks. "Wait, really? The reigning Super Bowl MVP is underrated? It sure seems like it," Benjamin said. "You won't find anyone who puts up a fight when you mention Lamar Jackson, Joe Burrow, Josh Allen in lists of elite quarterbacks. Throw Hurts' name in there, however, and all of a sudden you're clawing for your life." Advertisement Benjamin has a point. While Hurts doesn't get the kind of respect that a Jackson, Burrow or Allen usually gets, he has something all three quarterbacks do not have — a Super Bowl ring and a Super Bowl MVP. Hurts also happens to be the quarterback who has outdueled the otherwise brilliant Patrick Mahomes in both Super Bowls in which he's played — a feat that neither Allen nor Jackson has accomplished. (Burrow did it in an AFC Championship Game.) The Chiefs defeated the Eagles, 38-35, in Super Bowl LVII, and Mahomes was the MVP, but Hurts' turned in the better performance. Regular-season numbers should matter little in the grand scheme of a legacy when a QB's resume is all about being a winner and champion. In that sense, it is both strange that Hurts might be viewed as "underrated'' ... even though the ranking in this case is meant to be flattering. Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts is heading into the 2025 NFL season recognized as the NFL's latest Super Bowl MVP. In the Super Bowl, Hurts completed 77 percent of his passes for 221 yards. He threw for one touchdown and one interception. The quarterback was key to helping the Eagles achieve their ultimate goal at the end of the year, when they dominated the Kansas City Chiefs to win their second Super Bowl in franchise history. Surely, Jalen Hurts can't be viewed as underrated. Well, not exactly. Recently, CBS Sports put together a list of the NFL's most underrated and overrated quarterbacks. Hurts' presence in the former category will likely leave some confused, considering he just earned one of the highest honors for a player in the game. "You won't find anyone who puts up a fight when you mention Lamar Jackson, Joe Burrow, Josh Allen in lists of elite quarterbacks. Throw Hurts' name in there, however, and all of a sudden you're clawing for your life. But since when did gaudy stats and pretty highlights mean more than, you know, winning games that matter? Hurts played more of a background role in the Philadelphia Eagles' historic Super Bowl LIX run, but too many people forget he's now given two championship-caliber performances at that stage. And he's still just 26! He may not be flawless, but he's close to inevitable." alen Hurts #1 of the Philadelphia Eagles warms up before kickoff against the Dallas Cowboys prior to an NFL football game at AT&T Stadium on November 10, 2024 in Arlington, Texas. alen Hurts #1 of the Philadelphia Eagles warms up before kickoff against the Dallas Cowboys prior to an NFL football game at AT&T Stadium on November 10, 2024 in Arlington, always a yearly debate about the importance of QB wins in football. It's important no matter what, but in a team sport, a good quarterback might have a losing win percentage because his team is bad. It's difficult to find balance when it comes to the Hurts debate. In this case, he's an underrated player. Since entering the NFL as a second-round pick, Hurts has appeared in 77 games. He was the team's starting quarterback for 66 of those matchups. He showed a lot of promise in year one, but left a lot of question marks at the end of his first full campaign as a starter. By year three, Hurts entered the NFL's MVP conversation. Since then, his passing has been under a microscope and heavily debated, but he hasn't stopped winning. Over the past three seasons, Hurts' Eagles have lost just 10 games. They've been to the Super Bowl twice and will enter the new football season defending a title. Eagles Ex Kellen Moore Predicted For 'Nightmarish' Season

Eagles Ex Kellen Moore Predicted For 'Nightmarish' Season originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Philadelphia Eagles are predicted to fly again this season, even without Kellen Moore. The former offensive coordinator helped unleash running back Saquon Barkley last season, and guided quarterback Jalen Hurts to a MVP trophy in Philly's thrashing of the Kansas City Chiefs in last February's Super Bowl LIX. Before all the confetti fell, Moore was reaping the rewards of his job well done by accepting the head coaching job with the New Orleans Saints. Advertisement It could be a free-fall for Moore from penthouse to outhouse. According to most sports betting sites, the Saints - coming off a 5-12 season - have the lowest projected win total of any team in the NFL at 4.5. Yikes. 'A successful season as Eagles OC led Kellen Moore to a head coaching position, but he could be in for a nightmare season,' USA Today writes. 'His best quarterback had health concerns. Then, he retired. Rookie quarterback Tyler Shough will need to get up to speed quickly, or we could be in for another run by Spencer Rattler.' Moore is one of the brightest young offensive minds in pro football, but he'll likely be reminded that more often than not stars trump strategy. He will no longer be calling plays for Barkley and Hurts and veteran receivers A.J. Brown and DeVonta Smith. Instead, he'll be reminding Shough where to lineup, lamenting the retirement of Derek Carr and trying to produce yards and points with running back Alvin Kamara and receiver Chris Olave. Advertisement The Saints will likely be favored only four times all season: twice against the lowly Carolina Panthers and Week 16 and 17 games against the New York Jets and Tennessee Titans. The Eagles, meanwhile, have the best odds of returning Super Bowl LX next February in Santa Clara's Levi's Stadium. Dawn Staley shares wisdom and belief in Jalen Hurts

Dawn Staley recently took some time to remind Jalen Hurts of his greatness. You wouldn't believe how many texts and emails have been exchanged that mention Dawn Staley, her Philadelphia connection, and the belief that she, as a women's basketball coach, could succeed in a male-dominated industry. Fear not, Nick Sirianni's job as Philadelphia Eagles head coach is safe, but don't be shocked if you hear rumors about the NBA's interest in Coach Staley. Be honest with yourselves. How many of you believe Dawn would do a worse job than Doc Rivers did at times, or Nick Nurse is doing now? Okay, maybe that's unfair on Nurse's front. There's only so much a man can do when placed in a tunnel with no light at the end. Here's the point. There is talent in the coaching ranks in women's basketball. Some of the best in the business could make some noise coaching men's athletics, and Dawn is respected enough that she would make anyone listen. Put a pin in that. We'll revisit later and focus more on why we've gathered today. Did you hear the advice she offered to Eagles star quarterback Jalen Hurts? Dawn Staley is Philly born and bred. She's also a die-hard Eagles fan who has befriended Jalen Hurts through their mutual friend, South Carolina Gamecocks and Eagles legend Duce Staley. They have shown public support for each other, and recently, Coach Staley reiterated that support. Dawn hung out for an episode of Not Gonna Lie with Kylie Kelce. As you might expect, a discussion about the Eagles entered the conversation, one where Coach offered some solid advice for Hurts. "I know sometimes when you play for a team that's in Philly, and you're the quarterback, and you're the star, it really is a lonely place... He's QB1. We lose, the city goes crazy, so I know it's a lonely place. Sometimes, I text him, 'Hey, don't get too high with the highs or low.' He doesn't... He doesn't now. He's the coolest cat that I know, but sometimes you need to hear that you're the only one who is going to feel the pressure of everybody else, because other people in other positions can just kind of go under the radar, so to speak." Hurts' run with the Eagles has seen it all: ups and downs, praise and criticism, a heartbreaking Super Bowl loss, and an exhilarating Super Bowl win. Hurts and Staley share a special bond, and she occasionally shoots the quarterback a phone call for support. "When it's the quarterback, and we know you've got the potential to take us to Super Bowls and win Super Bowls, you really feel the pressure. So, I'm just like 'Hang in there. (I'm) thinking about you. It's Philly, so ride the wave. And, we rode the wave with him all the way to the Super Bowl, where it wasn't even a question about whether or not we were going to win." Wow! It's easy to see why she has won three NCAA Division I Tournament championships. We reiterate. We have zero issues with her being the next head coach of the Philadelphia 76ers, as long as the leadership there doesn't get in her way and disrupt things.
